For a six string, I'd suggest .11-.56, at least.

Yes, I don't know why I was thinking .11's. I think I had been using .11-.52 on my old guitar... that may be it.

Working with a trem here. Um what's a higher size than 13-56? Like that would be good for A?

the hell does a trem have to do with it?
They don't sell packs bigger than that, but you can custom order strings. I don't recommend it for the obvious fact that if you break a string, you'll be mighty pissed at yourself for using an odd guage.
That guage will be perfect. Little slinky, but its the same guage as a 7 string uses for that tuning.

You can get 58's which are really the best for A. 56's twang a little bit

I would get a set of 10-52's, than throw away the high E and get a separate 62 for the low A.

Wow, thats a new one...
I know the guys from Slipknot (found it out years ago, don't start.) use up to... .78? I THINK. Might be a little higher/lower.

from my experience with uber low tunings, i would suggest 13/14-64/70
thats my suggestion, you could use 13-56, but i think they would be too floppy
you need at least 13-60, no thinner than that.

Once you start getting past a certain thickness it doesn't even feel like guitar anymore. I was playing the Staind guitarist's sig model at a shop (It's tuned to A# with at least a .70) and it took a few minuted to realize that it wasn't a miniature bass. I picked it up thinking it was a normal guitar, than saw the strings and thought "DAMN son!" When you tried to pick you could feel the pick slide up and around each string becuase they were so huge.
But .78? Shit, Meshuggah uses .70 on their 8-strings. But they have like a 30" scale so it's a whole different story...

Christ... I'll have to recheck that. It might be .68. I'll do it sometime soon, and post on it.

I have used DROP A, but the other strings help keep the tension needed. Standard A is a no way without major adjustments.

you need 13s, I have 12-56 and I can just about get away with Bb, but A would be too floppy.

11's in B are fine for me, so I doubt you'd need anything over 13 to achieve a good sound with A.

I'm either putting my new guitar in C, or D. I'll stay with standard .10-.42 if I put it in D, but what do you think about C? .11-.46? I like the strings with less tension, btw.

Ill jump on the thread and ask what gauge would be good for Bb. fatdanny says 12-56 is pretty sufficient, any other opinions?

12s should be it, but I would think 11s could work aswell. ( for bb that is)

Hmm 14-64 sounds like it could work. I'll try that out on a shitty guitar to see how it plays. If it's too large I'll just put on some 13s.

Bb? Use the 12-56. Same as the 7th string. Its tuned one step down, too, so it won't be too slinky or two tight. Those will be perfect.

i used to tune to A for a year and used ernie balls 70-13. basically a 52-10 with the top string removed. i hated it though, koz it would always sound like i was playing korn or fear factory for fucks sake, and i hate it.
anyways, a 64 is preferable imo, koz 70s are too tight, but because i bought a dozen 70s, and took months to come in, i used the 70s.
if using 64s you may not need to drill out the tuning peg, but for the 70s it is necessary.
also i used a floyd pro copy, a 70 just fit the saddle. but the locking screw couldnt clamp the string tight enough, so i removed the locking screw and fed the string through where the screw should be, so i dont have to clip the ball ends.

I use 11's for E, Eb, D, Db, C. I also use 11 for B and Bb, but 12 are really what you want there. Anything under Bb you would want 13 or larger - You might even want 13 for B itself. That should be all anyone needs to know.

You can find the optimal string size for the tuning you want using this, handy little thing isn't it? On;y problem is tha it sometimes freaks out with the very low tunings, so you have to specify (ie A3 for low A)

the guy from coal chamber has .020 - .070 for B -_- but that's kinda over the top I think. All his strings are wound. but nowadays he changed the high E for a regular .020.
But for A you can maybe check out on of those zakk wylde strings. They go from .011 - .070 I believe

Didnt want to start a new thread so ill ask here, what do you think is the thickest string gauge you could use on a Floyd Rose? Someones told me its a bitch on them but I dont use the whammy at all. Im thinking about putting 11s on since I usually play in D but also want to try C to play some old skool in flames xd

you'll be ok with 11s and I imagine 12s as well. I'm sure you can do it with 13s anyway, loads of bands play detuned with floyds.

Heh. the nature of tunings!.. Could be very complicated at times.
I use 13's 'addario's currently on my Ibanez Ex. Also, I use only medium picks... Using hard picks might knock out the tuning or cause that extra twang sound Soulinsane was mentioning before. Course it helps to have lock tuning.. If you don't have lock tuning, your in pretty bad shape.lol.

You could get the thicker version on the Zakk Wylde strings;
.011 .014 .018 .036 .052 .070

Another question: I use 10 - 46 (EB regular slinky) for tuning to E. Why gauge string would I have to use to obtain the same degree of string tenseness when tuning to D standard (25.5" scale, fixed bridge)?

13's or more, I suggest getting a set of 13's then a few thicker bass strings to replace the lower strings. You can always buy a baritone guitar if you plan to tune that low all the time...

i believe that is what meshuggah's lowest strings are, the G above the E on bass..ive seen like places where you can order 70's and up in sets of like 3 so when you break one you wont be all mad because you broke a weird gauge string...next guitar i get, i wanna get a 7 and drop it down somewhat...but the thing is, after a little too much dropping, you are just a super short scale 6 string bass

Yeah. Next thing you know, there''ll be a special made guitar or bass for death metal in general. My idea would be, one set of strings, one size for both...and an automatic tuner to adjust wherever you need it. Might cost a fortune to make, but it's an idea none the less..
