can u play anything already?? or ur just starting??
anyway, ill tyell ya how i got started, maybe ul find some tips init, maybe someone will tell u that what i did was wrong, or right i dunno.
anyway, i started playing guitar and started learning dimmuborgir songs right away, easy songs, but i think its good to get started with powerchord riffs, and a bunch of basic things. and ull grow over time, so once u get the basics, u can start learnign whatever u want.
i qlso think its important to try hard stuff, say u found a riff u like but its too hard for where u are now (technique wise) go learn it, ive improved more and more from learning stuf that was above my skill level.
anyway, thats pretty much how i got started, im sure other peeps wil have their way but im sure they post some so good luck with it mate

go to www.guitar-pro.com and download guitar pro. (then go to www.mysongbook.com to get songs.)
Or look up powertab and download that.
I wouldnt be anywhere without these programs, makes learning 100% easier i think.

I'd have to agree to dissagree.
Guitar Pro can make it easier...
I noticed after using this program and nothing else for about 6 months, that when i tried to go back to tabs as i did before, i found it very difficult as they are written slightly differently. I feel this is enough to put out your natural timing as you will become more dependant on the little red dot following the notes, and without this aid may have a few difficulties learning without it.
Im not saying this program is bad thing though, my playing has improved 10 fold with this software. My 2 pence is that you should use it, but in moderation and use other aids such as books, tabs...the internet so you do not become dependant on it to learn!
Last point: This program is fantastic for learning riffs that are just that little bit too fast for you as you can use the speed trainer or alter the tempo to slow it down and/or speed it up. This can be a very usefull tool!

I suggest taking a bodom song (since you're obviously in love with em) like Kissing the Shadows....Buy a tape recorder that will reduce the speed (they're like $20) and play the song by tab at that slow speed. It'll help you with rhythm and accuracy.
In the meantime work on triplets on an open string
Practicing SLOW is what makes a guitar player a great/fast guitar player

I recommend guitar pro and mysongbook.com, but I would also suggest having some lessons with a real teacher (as opposed to the internet), it does make a difference.
how do you know if a drummer is sitting up straight?
he dribbles out both sides of his mouth

my advice is to take lessons at the start so you dont develop bad habits which become difficult to correct down the road. Even if you read all the instructional stuff on the internet you might not be able to spot some of your own mistakes. You don’t need to take massive amount of lessons, just enough to develop a small base which then you can take and start learning on your own with proper technique and form.

I agree with the above
Learn the right way , try after you get some chops to develop your own musical identity to many clones out there ,
another thing is just dont listen to metal , listen to blues , jazz , classical , any and all . most of all have fun with it.

I would reccomend Metallica's "Kill Em All" album for learning and practicing. Once you're more comfortable with the instrument(say a few weeks or less) then you can probably learn a song from that CD quite easily. But yeah, focus mainly on not developing back habits...

I definatly agree to that. Blues and jazz by far..thats basicly where most of the music nowadays comes from. I say learn the penatonic scale,
e-----------------------------------12--15-
B----------------------------12--15--------
C---------------------12--14---------------
D--------------12--14----------------------
A-------12--14-----------------------------
E12--15------------------------------------
Its pretty much the bassis to alot of solo's, if not the solo itself

If you have mates who play watch them and jam with them as much as possible. You'll pick up far more that way than sat in a room with a scales book!
Also tape yourself playing. You can listen back to see how you sound but also you can jam over the top of your recordings which will give you a better idea of playing in time and what works and what doesn't with certain chord progressions! If you keep the old recordings you can listen back months later and see how much you've improved, this is advantageous if you are getting down because you are having difficulty playing a riff in the new song you are trying to learn. It gives you a psychological boost to keep trying!
And keep playing and playing!
Welcome to the guitar playing fraternity

Yeah that's an awesome CD. Was the first whole album I learned all the rhythm and pretty soon it's going to be the first album that I have all of the solos down.
I think it's rubbing off on me too much though since I'm in an industrial metal band and they keep telling me I sound too much like Metallica when I'm writing dammit.
