Im going to buy a metal string acoustic guitar. I want to play stuff like Morbid Angel "Desolate Ways". Can anyone one please advice me on songs and how to play/write this kind of stuff. My problem is that i hardly have any music theory and i find it hard to compose things for acoustic guitar.

buy yourself a classical/flamenco guitar instead and learn to play that style. if you have powertab there are quite a lot of classical tabs there you can listen to and play along with. all in all learning those styles would help your electric playing.

If you want to sound liek morbid angel, then listen to the songs, look at the guitar tabs and figure out how they make their melodies, chord structure etc and adapt for own usage

Concerning your suggestion to buy another type of acoustic guitar i would have to disagree, because I particulary like the sound of the metal string acoustic guitar. I've been playing with the classical/flamenco for years. I want to buy this guitar specifically to play songs along this style. I think morbid angel uses this kind of guitar and that is the type of stuff I want play. Im not looking for the type of acoustic guitar that will help me the most in my electric guitar playing.

I know that i can always improve my playing with outside examples and sidehelps but my ambition is greater than that. I want to actually play this kind of music in acoustic guitar. Any help that this will give me in my electric guitar play will be a second effect on the terms of my prioritis right now.


I dont' see how looking for other morbid angel songs will help since the rest of them are deathmetal style. I do have learn that song that i mention, of couese.

I say just get it and play around on it. I figured out how Agalloch do their progressions (quite easily, I might add, and I suck at that kind of thing). Once you get part of it, the rest should just flow.

if youre just going to get a guitar to mimic the sound of others get a relatively cheap one. you know how much there is to know about electric guitars? theres the same amount to know about acoustics, so dont go crazy trying to learn everything if its just gonna be a 150 dollar guitar for fun

if you Arppegiate some different chords you can come up with something that sounds like ''desolate ways'' im sure you know some basic chords, just use some hybrid picking and different variations of finger picking and you can come up with a song thats really basic but sounds technical.

and when u buy an acoustic make sure you at least pay $250+
cheap acoustic guitars are so hard to play, makes learning so much more
frustrating.

flamenco or classical guitar is what u wanna check out. classical is more chord based, and flamenco is more of a solo based. ohh yea flamenco usually has a bitch load of string skips. and its funner then shred.
as for the type of guitar to get. go for a nylon string

nylon? why? i like the sound of the metal string guitars. Is the nylon string guitars superior? I thought this was more a question of taste. Besides, I think that in the song I mention (which is the type of material i am going for), Morbid angel plays with a metal string acoustic guitar.
