Early this year, I bought various guitar parts off ebay. after buying a body blank I decided to continue to buy parts for a guitar. as a project for me. $20 for the body blank, $20 for the neck (great neck for the price), $25 for the bridge, $15 pickup (pretty good sounding for the price), $20 tuners, and $15 strap lock. The rest of the parts I got from guitars laying around my room.

Since I lacked the proper power tools and skill to do the routing on the body, I contacted the luthier I use to fix my other guitars. He arranged for me to be his 'apprentice'. I worked on this guitar in his shop every wednesday for about 4 weeks. He basically guided me through most of the stuff. I did most of the work on it, just he made sure I was doing it right. I learned a ton of stuff.

This is what it looked like before

The first thing I did was make all the templates for the routing (not really as easy as it sounds). Then I did the beveling. I used a rasp to bevel and a file to smooth it out.

after doing all the beveling, I started on the routing. I routed out the neck pocket, pickup cavity and the control cavity. Making the templates took longer than the routing did
I also drilled a hole from the pickup cavity to the control cavity, a hole from the pickup cavity to the bridge hole (for grounding) and a hole for the output jack.

So after that was all done, I sanded like crazy. 80 grit, 120 grit, 240 grit, 300 grit, 400 grit, then 600 grit. Was smooth as fuck when I was done. it was all ready for the finish. I chose a nice natural finish. Tung oil I believe it was.

After the finish

Now the that the finish was finished, all that was left was assembly and wiring. Bolt the neck back on, screw the pickup in, hammer the bridge posts in, drill the holes for the pots, wiring it all up, and string her up. the neck needed to be shimmed so i went ahead and did that. The action was perfect then. tune it up and rock out.

Agreed (the planning/work). That made me laugh. You need to put a finish on the guitar, IMO. It looks stupid as a natural color with that body shape.

It has a finish. i was going for a different look. i liked the grain of this piece of wood, so i decided on a natural finish. Anyways I built this for me, not you, so if you dont like it then i dont care.

silver maple body. maple neck, rosewood fretboard. The neck is not really thin, but it has a nice feel.
The pickup is a no name one i got off ebay. once again, it is likely to be changed soon, but its acceptable.

I'm not too crazy about the shape, either, but the finish is pretty cool. If it was my guitar, I'd prpbably just paint the fucker black, but the natural finish suits it just fine.
Like I said, not too crazy about the shape, but at least it's unique, and you can be pretty sure you won't get sued by Jackson.
I never really thought about building my own axe, but you got me thinking about it now. Although, I don't have the time to hang out with a luthier and work on it myself, I'd probably just pay a pro. It's very cool that you did that, though; you can buy any guitar you wont, but it's never gonna mean as much to you as that one will. I'm very happy for you, man, enjoy it and fucking cherish it. Also, I think that since you put all that time and effort into it, the least you can do is get a decent pickup for it. I know you said the one on it sounds good, but chances are a Seymour Duncan will sound a lot better. Maybe on the pickup you can put a small piece of duct tape where it says Seymour Duncan and write you name on it in white out. 100% custom, and 100% hardcore.

BTW, I envy you for your hair, you little fucker. I wanted to grow mine out as well, but by the time it got halfway down my ears, I got frustrated with it and cut it all off. My hair is very curly and stubborn, and the prospect of buying expensive hair care products like a dman woman just wasn't very appealing to me. Plus I work in the food industry, and having hair down to my ass probably wouldn't be the best career move I've ever made.

Good job. If that is the first guitar you've made then I can't wait to see what you come up with later. You could even refurb that one. It's fun to have a guitar just to modify and fix.

I refurbed this one last year. I saved it from a pawn shop in really bad shape. I refreted it ( leveled and crowned ), refinished the neck and fretboard, replaced the pups and electronics, reshaped the headstock, put in new black MOP inlays, new nut, and installed fiber optic LED side markers. I gave it the works. It plays and looks much better now.

Thats fuckin incredible, I majorly respect your disipline (sp?) and your inspiration. You have inspired me to go and talk to my luthier, he doesnt look as badass as the one you were workin with. How exactly did you set up the apprenticeship? The body is kinda wierd, but its more like a classic RR, if it feels good to play on than i wouldnt even give a shit. Ive thought a lot about being a guitar tech/luthier. Im starting to get good at setting floyds up.

Well, I've known him for a few years now. He's the guy I'd always have fix my guitars. After I got all the parts I called him up and he agreed to help me out. He's just a super nice guy. So yeah.


Well right now I'm converting this 25.5 scale body to work with a 24.75 scale neck. It's gonna look goofy in the neck joint, but it should work out fine.

I'm also planning on buying a neck thru blank from carvin. that will probably be the next thing i do. Shouldn't be too far off.

It took a month of thinking up how to do it and then making the ideal work. I don't think I will ever do it again without first being able to removing the fretboard. The total cost for the side markers was near $20 but lots of frustration.

Very nice job on the guitar, glad you chose a different shape and finish to make your instrument even more unique(I actually like to see natural wood staining) and didn't just go with a standard shape or paint/graphics that every Joe and his cousin has.

Lets just say it had rust all over the bridge, strings, frets, pups, and tuners. I think some KoRn fan might have used it as a boat ore, played it in a rain storm, or went swimming with it Amazingly the neck wasn't warped so I could save it. The neck and headstock had chips everywhere but the body finish was surprisingly unmarked. I just filed and sanded out the neck, fretboard, and headstock and refinished it.
