Dimarzio Fred pickup...

Does anyone use it in the neck pos. of their guitar along with an X2N? I hear it's just like a PAF Pro only with unique harmonics, more mids and range. How would this combo sound for death, power, and thrash metal? What I'm looking for in the neck pickup is the kind of solos in Morbid Angel's last couple of albums, dreamy and spacey.

Well, what kind of stuff do you play?

Same goes for you, Leviathan. Is the pickup noisy? And I've heard you have to have really good technique cuz it's sensitive as fuck, is this true? Will a year-long player like me have a tough time with it?

Something about overtones or some shit, no idea really. The Absence use those pickups? I didn't get to hear what solos sound like on it, which is my main concern... cuz it's going to my guitar's neck along with an X2N at the bridge.

It's basically a PAF Pro that Joe Satriani had made to his specifications. More punchy mids, does this mean it will still be good for cleans?

i couldnt find a logical explanation to unique harmonics, i mean a harmonic is a harmonic, right?? correct me if im wrong or if u have some explanation what makes the harmonics unique, cuz it spounds rilli interesting adn im curious
.

also i hardly get harmonics on the bridge pu ()pafpro) so i dont get that iether.

i get some harmonics though

ok...harmonics 101...harmonics are what happens when you split a single string into two or more separate vibrations...

a string can only vibrate in between its nodes (end points i.e. bridge and nut)
it can not vibrate at these points...(of course)
a harmonic occurs when you lightly place a finger or whatever you are using at another point on the string. This stops the string from vibrating at that point but the string continues to vibrate on either side of your finger/whatever...
different harmonics occur when you put you finger/whatever at different points of the string separating the string into 3,4,5,6,etc...different separately vibrating sections...
________________________
/________________________\ its a vibrating string...bear with me
\________________________/

this string with a 12th fret harmonic...

________ _________
/________\/_________\ now vibrating in halves...
\________/\_________/

next...9th fret...I think im right about which frets are which overtones...but I have been wrong before...

____ _____ _____
/____\/_____\/____\ now in thirds...
\____/\_____/\____/

and so on and so forth...

I know that on instruments such as a violin the better made it is the more harmonics you can achieve with it...but I dont know how different pickups could do this...their magnetic...they HAVE to pick up every harmonic...at least somewhat...dont they???

Maybe cuz the pickup boosts more mids than the PAF Pro, it means that the harmonics sound fuller and more spiky and beefy?

I've been listening to Joe Satriani's "Crystal Planet" CD, in which he has a Fred in the bridge position. It doesn't help me much cause I'm interested in having it as a neck PU. I can tell that it has lots of mids, it has a wah-wah "aw" type of tone. At first I didn't like it but it's starting to grow on me.

But I still think I'll get a PAF Pro instead, cuz it's more balanced, I'm not sure if spiked mids is what I'll need. Maybe something more balanced is what an ordinary player like me will like.
