Who is the best Melodic Metal Player?
I just want to see what your guys opinions are on who is the best Melodic Metal Player. I know that there are many and its definately argueable, but just for you personally, who makes solos that you like better than anyone else.
My pick, who seems to shine consistently, is Marty Friedman. I think when it comes time for a solo, he just surpasses anybody in my book. He can shred just as fast as any shredder but unlike others, he can just play real slow and melodic when it comes time for the solo and does it very well consistently. Steve Vai is very good in my opinion too, but i dont think there is one quality a guitarist should have that he doesn't do extremely well.

I read "Melodic" and the first thing I thought of was Jesper Stromblad. But I don't think he's the best.

Friedman has some killer solo's on Rust in Peace. I would say Jon Nodviedt but his newer material isn't superb material. Bill Steer is pretty damned good too.

He definately writes some awesome shit, and for some time he was my idol, but he's not that great a player.
Yes Friedman kicks ass, but you can't forget Kai Hansen, Dave Murray, Laiho, Malmsteen, Manowar's guitarist(forgot the name), and hell maybe even Chuck Schuldiner. I'd probably choose Friedman cuz I don't like Malmsteen and Laiho is kind of... boring.

What made my choice of Marty Friedman is how in depth he gets in his solos and how knowledgable he is with it. I had got his Melodic control video a while a ago, but never got into it cause i was all about trying to get faster and whatever.
I just got done moving to our new house and i dug it up and put it on, and its seriously so advanced what he is doing and what he is able to do. Like its easy to understand what hes doing and his style of soloing, but to actually do it takes years and years and he just has a mastery at it at such a young age. I think Laiho has the same idea as Friedman, concerning himself with the Melodic side of playing, but Friedman sounds so much more exotic to me like Becker does in his melodic playing, but i feel like some of live Becker stuff is more blazing speed than Marty Friedman, (although all these people named here all kick ass at being melodic.)

So many choices that are equally good but i'll have to put in a word for Adrian Smith. His guitar solos always seem to have a purpose and feel like the melody of a song instead of just some random wank in the middle that has no rhyme or reason. A lot of metal guitarist construct solos and melodies just by shooting from the hip like they're playing live or something. Adrian plans out his solos and takes time constructing something that feels like its part of the song. I aspire one day to be able to compose solos the way he does.

Hell yeah. Powerslave is a fine example. I prefer Dave's soloing. I just like the shred factor.

Hmmm, you seemed to have answered the question for me. For melody, Friedman cannot be beat, or at least compared to everything I have ever heard to this point.
Malmsteen, Schuldiner, and Laiho are all very talented guitar players, but consistently lack feeling in their soloing. Schuldiner did have a few good ones, but Malmsteen and Laiho, just dont have a real melodic feel to their playing.

He has the most boring solos ever. He does the SAME arpeggio shape in every solo, and uses the technique that goes like:

Sorry, I just can't stand how everything praises him. Same meoldy in every solo basicly.

For me, I'd say the best melodic metal players were Chuck Schuldiner and Bill Steer (on Heartwork and Swansong) but a current player, I guess Michael Amott on the last three arch enemy albums (allthough there are not that many solos, his rhythm is spot on melodic-wise, and the solos he does, I really enjoy)

Yeah Steve VAi does that like a pro, takes his time and really creates a perfect solo. Tender Surrender and Lotus Feet have to have the greatest solos ever. And thats not just me saying they are good, i really think they are the two best solos EVER.

Let it fucking go already.
I made an honest mistake spelling his name, no disrespect to Randy Rhoads intended (this time, checking the spelling on his poster in my office because it’s obviously so fucking important). Based on my initial post, I think it’s evident that I think highly of him.
You want to talk about disrespect. Take a look at your remark to my initial post. Instead of commenting on its content you decide to comment on its presentation. In my mind that’s disrespectful and immature.
BTW – I could have a field day on your use (or lack) of grammar and punctuation, but out of respect for you, I don’t. Before you go off lecturing me about respect you should give it a try.

Bill Steer : Solo in Buried Dreams
Christofer Malmstrom : Solo in Submission
Chuck Schuldiner : All leads on the Symbolic Album
No one in particular in the band but Kalmah are great for melody.
Dont know the name of the Guitarist but the band Omnium Gatherum has unusual melodies.

I'll have to go with Galder(Old Mans Child and Dimmu Borgir).

I hate to be a pain in the ass, but I just couldn't let this slide....The words "wuz" and "was" have the same amount of letters. In fact, in "was" all 3 letters are positioned in a group on the left hand side of your keyboard, therefore you would use less energy typing "was" rather than "wuz" because you do not have to move your fingers a great distance or even involve your right hand. But in this cause, you seemed to have deliberately typed "wuz" which then contradicts your previous statement in saying laziness is your reasoning behind your horrid typing.
Anyway, Donzi, you're right about Randy

Laiho isn't the best in terms of creativity in my opinion, but I believe for his age he has incredible technical skills and is one of the best in the genre. I'd have to say Randy Rhoads would be my bet, just because his solos aren't just cock rock, they have melody, and they can be hummed along too, not too many guitarist have solos that can be sang. But thats just my opinion.

i pretty much agree with that. he has some awsome meoldic playing on the old testament records. i was also very impressed by the unforgiven solo when i heard it first time. i wouldnt consider kirk best melodic player although he kicked major ass in old metallica days. concerning melodic playing i like marty friedman alot. his playing is awsome and unique.

Friedman (Rust in Peace), Chuch Schulindler (can't spell it), Carcass's guy on Heartwork. Who does laiho play for? Or is he one by his own merit, like Vai or Satriani?

Tony Iommi's solos are all great and add soul to the song. I'm surprised nobody mentioned him . Must be the blues roots.

Melodic? What do people mean when they say melodic?
Sorry, my musical vocab is not strong. heh. Sad... I've been playing for like seven years almost now. hah.
When I think melodic I think of Hate eternal solo on King of All Kings. LIke on the song... whats it called... Servant of gods. Not too many variations in the ryhthm but good melody, I guess you could say.
Same with the early suffocation guys.
And yeah... I think i'll have to agree with other posts on this topic and go with Marty Friedman as well.

Carl August Tidemann. Just listen to his guitar work on the first Arcturus album. Divine. Can't forget TOMMY from Coroner either!

And Marty Friedman to me is one of the most innovative and musically beautiful players to coax anything out of the instrument. His bends + phrasing are AMAZING. The solo in 'Captive Honor' is one of my favorites of all time.
