DOD Death Metal Pedal

I owned one of these a couple of months ago...I blew it up...it was only like 10 bucks so I figured I'd just replace it. I found two different kinds on ebay (one that looks like someone with red jizz had their way with it and one all black). Is the red one just a re-issue or do they sound different?

Thanks in advance
(and I already know they sound like shit......thats what i'm going for )

I suggest at least buying a Digitech Death Metal distortion if you have some sort of Noise Gate running. That pedal runs hot as fuck.

Years ago my mate had a DOD Death Metal(horrid pink thing) sounded nasal as fuck, squealed like a raped pig when he stopped playing, terrible tone.
He soon got rid. I'd go for a different stomp box and maybe an EQ to tweak those ranges.

I have a DOD death metal and use it. It is the black and red one. I have played on a black one though and they both sound the same. They are not bad really, if you set the low and high to max and the mid to 5 it gets a good tone goin' but if you get too much mids its very nasal.

Yeah, I know what you mean by it sounding "nasal" but that shouldent be too much of a problem. Plus, i'm running it through a big nasty graphic EQ thingy, so I should be able to tweak it to where I want it.

Edit: I have a noisegate too.

I have a red and black one too . DOD's aren't that bad!, the first mistake most people make is turning the gain right up then the high right up then no mids which = shit. I have got a nice clear distortion by having the gain at no more than 9 O-clock and mucking around with my amp settings a bit. Having said that though, I would (since you still have thew choice) get something else, a rat distortion or something with a bit more control over your tone.

I picked it up on Ebay for about 50 bucks, and it's the best decision I've made for pedals. The boss metal zone sounded like shit, the digitech metal master was getting too old, and the Digitech Version of Death Metal was also shitting, so I went with the original, and I've never looked back. Turn the gain up 1/2 way, guts all the way up, pain all the way down, and scream all the way up will give you a very desireable sound.

I used to own one of those. While the gain aspect of it is great, it has alot of treble and little if any sustain going on. They also tend to break apart easily as well. I eventually got sick of it and brought a GNX-2 processor from Digitech.

Let's just keep it at:

"your not going to get a $1000 sound out of a $50 pedal"

i think that is obvious. it seems to me that most people here think everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on gear when alot of us dont. but we want good sound just as bad as the next guy. Do all the pedals designed for metal suck? i highley doubt it. maybe its not gona get you a fuckin great tube sound but i know theres people that use pedals that get good sound. so i think he wants to know what is a good pedal for his purposes of learning and having a good sound

There are pedals from H&K and Mesa, that are excellent, though they cost a little more.Pedals like METAL zone,METAL master, uber METAL,death METAL,ect, strictly sound like shit. You get a better metal tone out of a Big Muff or a Pro-co Rat.

I don't understand everyone's beef with the MetalZone. Sure, the name is cliche, but the pedal itself kicks ass in my opinnion. It gives you a lot of control over your sound, too, with plenty of settings. You can't just turn everything to 11 and expect it to sound great.
I hook mine up to my Marshall MG DFX-30 and it sounds badass. My buddy has a Peavey 112 Bandit, and man, the pedal really comes into its own on that thing. It sounds absolutely amazing. Go to my site to hear a couple of clips of it through my Marshall. The clips sound pretty good, considering we were recording on low volume with high gain.
In the end, however, just like the beauty is in the eye of the beholder, great tone is in the ear of the listener.

+1

i have a perma-borrowed mt-2, i use it with a little vox pacemaker s.s. combo because it has no distortion or drive channels(what it does have though, is some of the warmest/neatest tremelo ever ) so i just use the m#tullz0n3 with it and, it still sucks, but it doesnt need to sound great in that situation.

Scott Hull and Pat O Brien use the MT-2 as an EQ for their amps through the loops. It has its uses!

You simply run it through the clean channel on your amp and vhoila! I've also used it as a clean boost for my dirty channel, works pretty well like that, too, but my amp's distortion keeps cuttin in and out for some reason, so I just use the MT-2. Turning those little knobs on it makes shit happen, you know? Different strokes for different folks, I guess, but using a $100 pedal in front of a small practice amp is just plain dumb.

that's the perfect place for a pedal like that... someone who can't afford to buy a good amp with decent distortion can drop like $40 on a used boss metal zone and get "ok" sounds out of his practice amp.

in my situation... i kinda just inherited this junky little pedal, and i'm playing it through a junky little s.s. amp(which i also just managed to permabarrow) with no drive channel. for latenight jamming in my bedroom.

but if you've ever played a decent high gain amp... you'll understand really quick why the majority of the pros use amp distortion... and maybe some cases with "boost pedals". which is a whole different story.
