Anything with heavy palm muting that isn't boring-ass metalcore suits me fine. That song by Reflux "Above the Pyramid and the Eye" is pretty kick ass. The breakdowns in bands like Suffocation and Wormed is the kind of thing I prefer.

Well, Ed, you are going to get thrashed for this one... but. Eh.
probably Norma Jean's "I used to Hate Cellphones, but now I hate car accidents." You know the one I'm talking about. The one without guitar, and with then going on about something in the backround.

Suffocation - Leige of Inveracity
Wormed - Voxel Mitosis
Nile - Barra Edinazzu
Terminally, Your Aborted Ghost - Hung Through a Coat Hanger
I'm not a _huge_ fan of breakdowns, but the ones I mentioned are fantastic. Anything too bouncy-bouncy I don't like.

Wormed fucking rule when it comes to breakdowns. And of course Liege has the king of all breakdowns.
But Defeated Sanity's "The Parasite" and "Hideously Disembodied" have awesome ones too. I particularly love how the the one in the latter song accelerates towards the end...

I do like the one in "Should've Stayed In Shallows" by Fear Before.
Oh. And go the hell to bed, Matthew.

Dying fetus has nice breakdowns. One shot, one kill or destroy the opposition. And many others.

Napalm Death have some real good ones, from old songs all the way up to the latest album's "Silence is Deafening". But yeah, Wormed crushes the shit out of you, their breakdowns feel like a gigantic astral body is crushing your insignificantly sized head to a dust. br00t3l.

I like The Red Chord, except the vocals, I can't stand them.
My fav breakdown is Unearth-Endless. That buildup sends chills down my spine every time.

Either Avenged Sevenfolds outro on Waking the Fallen, Cradle Of Filth's Her Ghost In the Fog(Bass Solo), Midian(the end). Dimmu Borgir- Track 8 and track 10 on Death Cult Armageddon. . . those solos are hidden enough and great enough that they don't bog down the music or beat it out in any way.

"Continuing War on Stupidity" by Napalm Death has the most shit-kickingly heavy riffs of all time. Especially when there's those decending tom fills and Barney screams "THRASH!"

I would have to agree that Dying Fetus breakdowns fuckin kick ass. Suffocation breakdowns would also be up there with excellent breakdowns.

Anyone here listen to motherfuckin' DEVOURMENT?! Those bitches play brutal "slam" death metal, which means breakdowns here and there in all of the songs. Like Suffo, they're from New York. They're like a bit more weird than Suffocation, but not as tripped out and technical as Decrepit Birth.
It's incredible how a simple palm-muted powerchord can make me bash my skull into solid concrete. Tun-tun tun-tun tun-tun-tun-tun. \m/

heheh i saw unearth live too they ware some kind of shit. i never knew someone could make an entire set comepletely in 4/4.
best breakdowns:
Six Feet Under - they do REAL breakdowns the ones where its just bass and drums with no guitar.
i remember when breakdowns used to be good, before they had guitar. when the guitarist would shut up and itd be just bass and drums, and there wouldnt be some retard trying to throw up and call it vocals.

Im probably in the wrong thread for this seeing as how i see alot of posts about hardcore (IMO the entire scene is just one big breakdown after the other) but
SLAYER - RAINING BLOOD - classic but great.

Megadeth - Wake up Dead...the end of that song if that counts as a breakdown.
Also Decapitated - Three-Dimensional Defect, bass solo part...probably not a breakdown but cool as hell.

Damn fucking right!
There's so many fucking abrupt changes throughout the whole album that kick arse. One of my friends, who's into hardcore, rates the Psycrology breakdown (about 3:00) as pretty fucking awesome. I guess it counts as 'bouncy-bouncy' but it shits all over the chunky Thrice and Poison The Well breakdowns he usually listens to.
