Heel swivel technique

I've heard about this technique (PPL say Sandoval does it) but I've never seen it until now. This is George Kollias, drummer for Nile and Sickening Horror. You can see him doing the Heel swivel, but I still don't get it. I just don't see how swaying your heel from side to side helps you go faster.
I dunno, call me a nubie I guess.....
But he's fucking AWSOME!

Wow, pretty impressive drumming.

Well, if that clip were audio only, I'd swear that guy uses the heel-toe technique... The dubbelkick speed is amazing.

But as you say, you can clearly see he's not doing that... He just swings his heel sideways. I hope someone can explain it, hehe. Would like to know it as well, seeing that's my weakest point.

I know the technique well, Martin Cavernagh (Dawn of Azazel, Skulldom) uses this technique a LOT with his left foot, it works by having a hit on each swing of the heel, rather than one complete leg cycle so in effect the leg is doind half the speed that the feet are doing, I don't use it though, not only cause I don't know how to, but also cause I can double bass singles at pretty high temps (my record is 260) and I am learning to do doubles, both the RR LL way and RH LH, RT LT way so I don't really need this technique.

but maybe when I have got time I might practice it

I've seen Thomas Lang do them, but he does them for doubles. Is he doing that in video? I can't download it so that's why I'm asking.

From what I remember, I think not. I might be wrong though.
