EASY songs to play
I only just started guitar, and I am yet to have a lesson - but I want to try and learn an easy song that I acutally like, which is prooving hard. Any suggestions?
I can play the start of Preemptive strike by Malevolent Creation, the start of Masters Apprentices by Opeth and a few slam songs (easy).

There are already sticky forums about pinch harmonics and fun/easy/awesome songs to play, so just go and check thouse out, you might get some idea from them. But when I first started playing, I played alot of slayer stuff... it's not too difficult and it's awesome to play

Mandatory Suicide is easy too, and very fun. Go learn some of Metallica's "Kill 'Em All", nice easy mid-paced songs.
You shouldn't really limit yourself to easy songs even if you're a beginner, tackle something you don't think you'll be able to play yet and push it, you'll learn and improve a lot faster. I wouldn't say go learn some Children of Bodom if you've only been playing for a month, but maybe some In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, stuff that's actually quite simple but will be challenging at first. Those 2 bands helped me a lot with my alternate picking.
Oh, speaking of alternate picking, learn this awesome fucking song: Deicide - Scars of the Crucifix. It will take you a while to get it up to speed, but seriously, you'll learn and improve lot with that song.

mandatory suicide is great for beginners
the intro riff is great for power chord shifting, once you master that, you find shifting powerchords a lot easier. that riff helped me out loads when i first started

Hell yes. A good habit is to play the part after the 4 opening powerchords higher up on the fretboard(forgot which frets exactly), instead of simplifying it using the lower strings. Not only will the notes not ring out unnecessarily, as you said it helps a lot with shifting your hand's position a lot. That's the way Decapitated play it, not sure if Slayer do it the same way cuz I haven't seen them play it live.

Black Label Society riffs are easy, yet you'll be forced to learn how to do pinch squeals well. Slayer is great for that "beginner-to-intermediate" transition.

any who,
i just learn medusa (anthrax), and i must say it has a fiary. simple into, also try some stuff from rust in peace.
also Metallica is good becuase they use alot of power chords, which is very metal.
PS
it's called an intro, not "starting".

The white stripes - 7 nation army
haha no dont, everyone i knew at school thinks that song is worth playing, its almost as bad as nirvana.
Do a search for finger exercises and start doing the boring shit now, it will pay off bigtime in a couple of months. (but obviously learn songs aswell).
A lot of opeth is easy (simple riffs here and there throughout songs which are cool), and if you want to start learning solos, check out some of their mellow songs like windowpane. Pretty slow compared to their earlier stuff.
good luck

Everyone's opinion of what is easy is different. Most any black metal song is going to be easy to learn. However, if you want to play metal that sounds good try playing Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. It's pretty easy, and it sounds killer if you play it right. Learn to play songs right too, don't fuck around when it comes to get something down the proper way.

Post-whore........
Anyway, try "In Human Form" by Death (minus solos). Really cool riffs that are pretty easy.
"Day of Suffering" by Morbid Angel is also pretty easy, as is "Thy Kingdom Come", to an extent.
All of these are easy only when played w/o the solos, except for day of suffering (not really a solo, just a load of sub-audible noise).
Have fun.....
