My Amp Options
Grr well i didnt make as much money as i thought i would at my job (the fuckers wouldnt give me the hours they promised) so now there are a few paths i could take
Path 1=Buy a Madison divinity head, I should just have enough money to pick one of these up right now, which would would be cool because ive been waiting to get something nice for a while, also if i dont like it the MSRP is sopposed to go up on these heads, and they also seem to be getting more popular everday.
Path 2=Wait and save. I could wait till say X mas and maybe pull off something like a used powerball that would be only a maybe though. This way i'd actually be getting what ive wanted for so long, but im still not even sure if id like it or not (some cool guy just got one and is going to post some REAL death metal clips soon so thatll be interesting)
Path 3= Rack. There is this sweet Tube poweramp on ebay going for real cheap that no one is buying. If i bought i could probably still have 400 dollars left over for a preamp, perhaps an Engl 530?Ada Mp1? or maybe even a GSP legend? now it wouldnt be my intention to keep any of those preamps, id probably evently save for an E 570 preamp (which i know i would love) this way would involve the most waiting, but i think it would probably like the tone better then anything else i mentioned.
anyways there are pros and cons of each idea, and i have no idea what im gonna do here.
So post some opinions on which way i should i go here

I would wait and save.. it gives you much time to collect information to make an informed decision.

Looks like you do not really know the tone you are after. In this case, go and check all kind of amps until you found your dream-machine, then save money for it.
The rack option looks good to me, because you can buy one part at a time. Buy a nice preamp and be happy, save money and buy a cool poweramp and be happy.

Each option sounds acceptable. Why not get a better job and wait a while and go for the powerball,or any other amp that comes to mind.Spend the time while saving looking around and trying as many different amps as you can,and come to a solid decision. And while you are saving you might come across an awesome deal, rather than blowing your money then finding one.Have a think about it theres no hurry.

Go to rocksolidamps.com ... there's a bunch of clips with some excellent amps posted there. Derek Roddy even supplies some of the drum tracks for the clips.

1. how much money do you have?
2. how much do you want to spend?
3. how much flexibility/options do you NEED?(ie good cleans? tonefull crunch? all out Br0ot3ll? fx loop? ect)
4. what kind of volume levels are you looking at?
5. styles of music to be played and bands whos tone you like?
6. in depth description of what kinds of sounds you want?

Once i sell what i need to sell ill have about 1300 canadian
Ill spend as much as i have, gear comes first for me
i dont need a jc120 clean, but i would like a fairly good clean, i really like the clean channel on the GX 130c.
as for flexability, in addition to an all out brutal tone, id like to get a nice smooth lead tone, also ill need to have an acceptable tone for playing stuff like Iron maiden, doesnt need to be outstanding it just needs to work.
also one thing im really after is Clarity, when playing in a brutal death band live i want people to hear everything that im playing even over all the gain.
Here are some links to some of the tones id like to acheive, this will save me having to describe them
Necrophagist-Seven
Necrophagist-Intestinal Incubation
Suffocation-Despise the Sun
Hate Eternal-Praise the Almighty
also you should try and find an Opeth mp3 to get an idea of the kind of clean i'll need
I will be playing at an average band level, when playing with my death metal band the drummer tends to bit loud sometimes (and stupid ) so ill be playing at pretty high volumes.
I might be playing in a lighter band (like some clean opeth type stuff, and maybe some maiden type stuff) so yes i am going to need a fairly good clean channel
hopefully thats enough info for you to perscribe something

haha i knew that would happen, I know there has been like 60 million 5150 threads. Ill search someday but for now i only get like 2 minute intervals to check metaltabs out every once in a while at work where the only internet connection i have access to is. Otherwise i wouldnt have even bothered asking. sorry, i should know better than to break the golden rule "Searcheth before thine Asketh"

maybe a good tube poweramp like a mesa, marshall or peavey 50/50 style. then a 530 to start... and if once you get more money and you'd like to you could uprgrade the 530 to a 570 or if you really got the cash, a 580.

Or just stick with the 570 since its better than the 580 and cheaper.

wait for the powerball
1. you will get what you've always wanted
2. you get a better amp
3. the waiting will make the amp so much sweeter
4. you will end up regreting getting the madison because you will know that you could have got a much better amp if you waited a while longer
ino this because i got my shitty metal axxe guitar because i couldnt be bothered to wait and save up for an ibanez. i've been regreting it ever since.

ha, i wouldnt say that at all. but okay.
the 570 is basically the preamp section of the SE. the 580 is it's own monster. basically the index of engl tone, much more tonal options.
sure it comes down to personal taste. but these preamps are on a different level from each other.

the powerball can definetly do those tones, the e530 can do them too, if you have a good preamp with it.

Well, the reason I say the 570 is better because it has seamless switching where as the 580 has a ever so slight latency. Not too big of a difference, but at a 1000$ less, I'll take the 570.

i'm more worried about how it sounds. and while the 570 sounds amazing, the 580 can just do more. much more important to me than some latency that noboy is going to notice unless you sit the two side by side and race them.

a much wider range of tones.
as i said before, the 570 is simply the preamp section from the SE head. while the e580 is more of engl's take on the triaxis/jmp-1 concept. such a unique and classy preamp, nothing like it imo. one of those amps you can get lost in. like a strategy game, one wrong turn and you're back retracing your footsteps and wishing you would have saved your game(or preset).
if money was no object i'd grab the 580...
plus it's chrome
