I've been working on this song lately. It's pretty cool, one of my own, and the E minor chord is played a lot. Anyway, I was practicing it up to about five minutes ago, and then just for shits and giggles I decided to go into the sixteenth note tripplet riff from Metallica's "One".

I've been playing that riff for a long time, it's one of the first riffs I learned, so I can play it pretty fast now. When I play heavy riffs like that, I get all into it, and I just abouse the fuck out of the guitar. I utilize some pretty heavy picking. Anyway, as I was doing this, I think I played the riff like two times and on the third time, right when I played the E5 power chord, my A string just popped off the saddle. This has never happened to me before, so I thought it was kinda funny.
At first I thought that it popped out of the nut, but upon closer inspection I discovered that the problem was in the saddle. The saddle had been slowly but surely eating away at the string, and by the time it popped out, there wasn't a whole hell of a lot of string left.
This is weird, because I just tuned the guitar earlier today, and it held its tuning pretty well, didn't have no problems on that particular string at all. Has anything like this happened to any of you guys before? The coating or winding or whatever it is that's on the string was just gone.
I think that the problem is in my action being too low. I had recently had the guitar set up to fix the intonation, and the tech lowered my strings, which were already pretty low. The strings currently on the guitar are regular gauge .10s, but before them, I had .09s. Ever since I had it set up, the strings have been making a lot of noise when I play it.
I don't have this problem with my Warlock which is set up with .09s and has pretty low action as well. I'm gonna put new strings on it, Super Slinky .09s, and see if that fixes the problem, but I doubt it will. I might have to raise the action a bit.
Has anyone else ever encountered this? Any suggestions on how to address this problem?

You probably either have a bur...or some shrapnel as I would like to call it.


Just clean off your saddle, their is probably a small fragment of metal there, and over time it will tear away at your string. There is a lot of tension on that componet you know.


At the worst the saddle coulde be fucked...but thats not a big deal really, those are usually pretty cheap.

Clean the mother-fucker off!!

I changed the strings and put lighter gauge ones on. I didn't clean the saddles per se, but I did take them off and turn them upside down and what not. I have adjusted my action, it seems allrght now, I don't have any of that buzz I had before. The strings are still fresh, though, so the tuning is very unstable. I'll give 'em a couple days to settle in while tuning the thing on a regular basis.
Hopefully this will do the trick.
If it doesn't, I can always replace the saddles and get some more strings.

Just loosen the string and clean the saddle.

That simple.
