Question Need help

Sorry to make a whole thread just to ask for help...
Anyway the deal is

I have an ESP ltd F-100 guitar, a Peavey Studio Pro 112, and BOSS gt6 pedals. Im really not enjoying playing right now because all the effects (distortion, delay, chorus, etc.) sound really crappy and have awful feedback and "Hiss". I have tried tweaking it but dont really know how to make the effects sound clear and crisp. Right now this is how I have them connected:

Guitar ->(input) GT6 (Output {R}) -> (low gain input) Amp

Amp Settings:

Clean Channel/

Volume: 3
Setting: Vintage
Low: 7
Mid: 4
High: 6

Master Control/

Reverb: 6
T.Dynamics: 100%

Im not sure if its just a problem with the amp and pedal settings or if its the guitar's pickups.

Im guessing I have to set the pedals in tune to the amp. I.E. the output select and such. But I really see no difference.

The way you have it connected is a pretty hot way to connect up your GT6 (hot = noisy). My GT6 is the quietest when I use it in the effects loops of my amp. If you have not heard about the 4CM (4 Cable Method) you should research that here:

4CM

Also with the GT6 I have the best tone (and lowest noise) when I keep the preamp gain lower (usually between 25 and 40).

BTW - The forums at GT Central are a good source for information about the use of the GT-X (where X = Pro, 3, 5, 6 or 8).

Thanks Donzi I believe this will help a lot. I had tried before in this way...

Guitar -> (input)Gt6(ouput r) -> (lowgain)AMP
Gt6(send) -> (receive) AMP

I had 3 cables instead of 4... so this may be the solution to the whole problem. Ill post back with a huge thank you if it works.

- Sorry admin... first time in forums. Thanks for moving the thread instead of deleting it -

It’s not just adding the fourth cable that’s going to help (the fourth cable only allows you to use your amps distortion). Unplug all your cables and try connecting them like this:

(Cable #1) Guitar -> GT6 Main Input
(Cable #2) GT6 Left Output (left = mono, not the right) -> Amp FX Return (Receive)
(Cable #3) Amp FX Send -> GT6 External Return
(Cable #4 - if you want to use your amp’s preamp distortion) GT6 External Send -> Amp Input (low or high gain - I'd try both).

BTW: if you want to use your amps distortion and you have it cabled that way (as described above in Cable #4) in the GT6 pick a patch and set the distortion setting to “External” and set the gain and level of the distortion to no less than 50.

Yeah I had been searching around for 4CM and finally understood it. I fixed the feedback. I basically blocked my Peavey preamp and used the gt-6 preamp instead. Ill be using my amp's distortion too later on. But basically what im looking for is impossible with my amp. I wanted a deep, grungy, distortion. Im trying to make a patch that will imitate that sound.

Anyway thanks a lot. I really apreciate your help.

Gab,

No problem – I hope you find your tone.

One thing I just recently learned abut how to get a decent distortion sound is to setup a patch you kind of like (preamp and distortion pretty close to what you want) then enable the compressor (FX1) and set the tone to MINUS 50 (-50). Add any additional tone modifications with the EQ - post distortion. If you still need more tone tweeking, use the SUB EQ (FX2).

Also, you might try experimenting with the cab models (by turning them off or increasing the direct level to 100) and seeing how that affects your tone. For best results I have my output select set to Line/Phones however, your situation may vary.

Here is an EQ link that explains the frequencies and how they apply to the guitar. It is really helping me understand what I need to boost and what I need to cut.

The secret with the GT6 is in the EQ’s.

EQ Primer

Damn, you seriously have been a great help. Just a few hours ago, before I read this message, I took the time to personally understand all aspects of the gt6. By now I came up with a distortion using OD, EQ, and Sub EQ. It sounds kinda like Lamb of God, but one can never come close . Thanx for the EQ Primer link. Ill probably get a better understanding of it in due time. Ill try adding the compressor too.

Thanks again...
