I wouldnt suggest either for metal, have a look at ESP,Ibanez,Jackson.
I would go a PRS over a les paul standard by the way.Play them and find out what you like more.

choose
I personally play a 2001 lps and i wouldn't give it up for anything. I sold both of my ibanez 1570's as soon as i got this axe and im in the market for another one. I kept the origional pups and i play through a rack consisting of a jmp-1 through a mesa 2:90 and it sounds great. I've played dozens of shows with the lps and never had any problems, but it gets heavy during long sets. Every body has a personal preference for guitars and the only way to know for shure is to go out and play both a make a comparison for your self.
OPINIONS ARE LIKE ASSHOLES ---- EVERYBODY'S GOT EM

custom 22
Better upper fret access and plus a higher resale value if you don't like it.

I would go for a PRS if you are a lead because they get better High's but the rhythm doesn't compare(okay it compares it's just not as good) to a les paul's so primarily rhythm guitarists should go for a Les paul. Both are pretty bluesy so don't forget that. . . I used to play on a Custom 24 ten top but I've also played on a Les paul classic. . . Both great guitars. . . just set them up right and they are both very functional(not to mention versatile) but I love to play with the bluesy stuff when I can. . . but it's partially because of my style of playing. . . just like when Eddie Van Halen played Jerry Cantrell's Les paul. . . It sounded just like Eddie Van Halen playing because a lot of it has to do with the guitarist/ musician and their particular style. So which is better would be decided by which side you primarily play. . . Rhythm or Lead.

i havent played a prs, only looked at them, so i'm guna have to say les paul. For metal, what realllly fuckin helps me is that 9 degree slant of the neck... its just more comfortable for trem picking and chording on the low strings... which is why i hate my ibanez RG, and like my BC Rich Jr. V.... but the V has like a 7 degree slant... but yeah you get the point
edit added:
remember, you can change how the guitar sounds, but you cant really change how it plays

those are two specific guitars though... the custom 22 has a more sleek feel and brighter tone. imo making it more of a shred guitar. if you can call it that.
but if we were talking gibson vs prs in general. i think a les paul lite with a pair of emgs would be pretty hard for any prs to match in terms of being "good for metal". or an old school sg with the slim neck. IMO

I haven’t played a PRS but I’ve heard great things about them. I have played many Les Paul’s and they are hard to beat (especially if you find the right one).
It’s too bad PRS had to stop making the singlecut.
My advice is try and play them both in order to help decide.

Well. . . I'd never load a bad ass guitar like a PRS or Gibson with EMG's. The standard pickups are a hell of a lot better or if you change pickups put in some Seymour Duncans or some Dimarzios. .. . EMG's will slay the natural tone of the guitar.

I like the LP more. I like the way it looks more, and there's more options for a LP. I thought the LP handled heavy rhythm playing better. But the one thing I don't really like about either one of the guitars is that they're not balanced very well. The botton half of the guitar is like waaay heavier, so it always tips downards.

Amen Silent Night, That's my reason for investing in nice leather straps because the weight of them is killer for long gigs.

which is exactly why they're often considered great pickups for metal.

Yeah, that's what I thought of, if I ever get a LP, if I'd want to put EMG's in them. I like the sound of the EMG's but I also like the sound of the passives, and I thought it might kinda be a waste to put the EMG's in a LP.

I use EMG, because I'm broke and I'm broke, in part, because I use EMG. They are alright I give them that, but maintenance is too much and while they are good for metal. They do not exactly rock out for the bluesy type mellow sound that I want a lot of the time or for the jazzy sound. They aren't versatile enough. That is my one and only beef with EMG.

Yup, and for that matter, just about any guitar can be used for metal guitar if you got tone in the finger tips or just know how to play
I'm pretty sure I seen Nile using a Fender strat in a vid. Now if those dudes can make a Fucking fender strat sound that good then I don't see why we can all adapt and become comfortable to some guitar.

Do any of you guys think selecting from the two most expensive guitars from the shop is good?...
Would there be guitars from the same brands that come close to the sound of the guitars in question even if they are much cheaper?
Or is there something about going into the shop and spending a shitload to get you good tone???
(im still on topic.. right?)

How does an LP compare to an ESP Eclipse?
Just curious, never played any of them but may consider buying one.

I have both
the Eclipse is a kick ass axe , its lighter for starters mine is loaded with the dual 81s , has the racing flag inlays started by hetfield from his JH ESP series I have the Eclipse Standard , I think they come also with 81 /60 combo . I love the Eclipse ,its a great sounding and playing guitar , but as cool and as good as it gets , NOTHING IN MY HUMBLE OPINION BEATS A GIBSON Les Paul .In my opinion it is the cadillac of guitars ,I have a standard , custom , Zakk camo , Page , slash ,Classic , faded and a class 5 quilt top ,thats how sick I am , no seriously thats how much I personally love the Les Paul ,you can do blues , rock , metal , oh yeah Randy , zakk , Iced Earth to name a few used Pauls besides Pagey , John Sykes , John Norum , gary Moore etc and now with gibsons burstbucker pups you probably dont need to put EMGs in the paul
In my humble opinion if you buy a guitar like a Gibson Paul or a PRS you shouldnt need to change a thing ,both those guitars cost a arm and a ball , Now I have a Dean schenker custom , the pups suck on those.I swapped them for a JB/59 combo.
Sorry for rambling the Eclipse is a great guitar , But if I could only have one , Id pick a Gibson.
I may pick up a LTD truckster for shits and giggles man that guitar is uglee

IMO
Metal comes from the heart....and can be achieved on most guitars.
If you wanna rock....you're gonna rock!
A true LP simply makes it easy with it's unbelieveable action.
And that big thick neck feels so good in your hands.

I like the 60's neck on the LP more than like the one on the Custom. It's not that I can't play it, but the custom neck is a bit too chunky for me.
