Dude, we don't need another Opeth thread. Yeah, its great. "Greatest Album Ever" is way too far. I've only gotten up to about #5 (had to turn it off), but what I've heard has been amazing.

I've only heard "The Grand Conjuration" and "Ghost of Perdition" and I fucking love GOP, it's got that nice acoustic Opeth touch to it. This is just my opinion but everyone says Morningrise is the best, I think it's their worst, but it's just me.

Morningrise was my favorite too. But seriously, Ghost Reveries is fuckin' amazing.
Its a seemingly all-encompassing album. Classical acoustic parts, blues solos, metal shredding, brutal parts, heavy parts, emotive parts, 70s prog rock songs/interludes. I'm not going to under rate it, this is one of the best albums I've heard in my life. And The Grand Conjuration is perfect in context and with high quality (following the very emotional Hours of Wealth).
Anyone with enough will power to wait until August 30th is going to blow their load when they hear it. I know I'm gonna buy it the second the FYE across the street from my school opens.

it's pretty damn good. there are 3 entirely clean songs, which not many people expected. overall there's probably more clean than brutal parts...interesting. the music is excellent

I did the same thing for Nile, and I'm gonna do the same for Opeth.
EDIT:I don't think there is anything wrong with getting it sooner,I just like the suspense of holding out for it.

You'll die of blue balls before August 30th. Take my word on that.
And no, I wasn't sure if you had ripped it onto your computer. Thats why I asked.

The Grand Conjuration seemed alittle too Industrial in the beggining but now that I've listened to it a few times, its gotten better.
Im just hoping that the other songs will give me goosebumps just like every other song they have written.

I just got it. Its very different to there other releases. Only problem is the 2 songs which leaked + baying of the hounds seem to be the only heavy songs on the album. I"ll get flamed for saying this but it seems like the other songs seem to be fillers o well.

If this is the greatest album ever, then I'm Mickey fucking Mouse.
I've only heard one time through, so I'm going to reserve judgement for now but I will say the album is not bad. So far it's about average, nothing special. I know Opethfan will have my head for even thinking about actually listening to this and not proclaiming the greatest thing ever before ever letting it sink in, but that's the way you should do these things.
A few observations though
The production is very, very slick. Too slick in fact, it's processed like a motherfucker.
Akerfeldt's singing is pretty good, and really feminine in parts. His growl is as always, excellent.
The drums sound really great in places and also bland as shit in others, inconsistent.

Is Steve Wilson still doing producing? Because honestly, the production on this sounds exactly like Porcupine Tree's "Deadwing."
Mike can sing his ass off. Mike can still growl his ass off. And I thought he was losing it...
and didn't someone else do the drums? Martin is still really sick, isn't he???
btw: definately not the "greatest album ever." Very close for Opeth's greatest album, but IMO Blackwater Park is still their greatest. Don't follow my lead and don't start that "best album" shit again.

1) Nope, Steve Wilson didn't produce it
2) Yes Mike sounds great
3) Someone else didn't do drums, Martin did
4) I think Blackwater Park is their weakest album

I'm listening to it right now, damn it's sounds really really good. So and sorry it that long, Dissection (Bill is it?), I guess it was my connection or something. Usually it doesn't take me and Tranny long at all to trade.

I dont know the name of the song but track 4 is like a hippy song (but it still sounds fucking great) and I love Isolation Years. The album in genreal turned out really really well. There are only some slight parts that i disagree with and some parts where the keyboards just ruined it.

Well, that was surprisingly mediocre, and also forgettable. Opeth's long songs don't usually have me checking to see what track I'm on. That 'The Grand Conjuration' sounds more like Dream Theater with each listen doesn't really help, I guess. I wouldn't call it a bad album, as there are some good parts, but I'd want something more out of an 'experiment' and I definitely expect a greater level of consistency from Opeth. I guess that's what I get for expecting.
Does anyone else hear 'This site it's a shit' in a hard, stereotypical dago accent? Like Super Mario or the greaseball pizza man on the Simpsons. That rules.

I will agree in the experimental sense. I believe that they have 4 directions in which to travel. Either go back to one of their earilier days(Orchid/Morningrise or Still Life/BWP style), continue on this route of half liked/half disliked by fans, go to something completely different or unexpected, or just disband...which would suck...major ass.

Cmon guys, please please save all these reviews until its out for sale. I know I could easily just Not look at this thread but its too much of a cocktease already just by not looking for the album on the Internetz.
Its like waiting 3 years for a sequel to your favorite movie to come out, then have some dudes who've seen it a month before its out tell you "Its okay, but I've seen better." to you.

Listened to it once all the way through, and I'm just glad to have new Opeth to listen to. So far it's good, but it'll probably grow on me with time. Perhaps not their best album, though (would've liked some more ballbustingly heavy parts).
Love Ghost of Perdition though.
And yes, Nevermore's This Godless Endeavor may be more worthy of the "Greatest Album Ever" title.

well...i listened to it once through but i fucken downloaded the radio version of tgc again and the whole album was going smoothly and then i here that...so i gotta reburn the fucker with the right version of tgc. *ends annoying bitching*
i think the new album will take some getting used to but overall its pretty damn good...the biggest change is the clean vocs..more major keys and "happier" melodies for him to sing

I love the album. I think its pretty good. Really different from anything else they have, but I think in a few months once people have had a chance to get used to it, it will be thought of as a great Opeth album.

Some other funny things I've found myself (both in Ghost of Perdition):
1:05, Is he growling "semen"?
2:25, Is he growling "draining the weenus?"

It's a good album - but it's nothing different (from Opeth, I mean). I'm entertained yet dissapointed at the same time. Opeth is kind of one of those bands where you know what the next album is going to sound like: good, yet...familiar. Too familiar. I love his voice and his acoustic melodies, but hasn't this all been done before on the last few Opeth albums? I'm getting tired of trying to memorize and differentiate between them all! Nothing stands out anymore, it's all been done by them before.
I can say "Ooh man, that acoustic interval really was beautiful!" but theres alot of those and I can always expect them. In a way, it's compareable to a Dying Fetus album - it's going to be cool, no doubt, but really nothing setting it apart from the last. My favorite Opeth songs are the more simple ones.
What I really, really want from Mikeal is a simple album with him and an acoustic. Thats it. Something along the lines of "Still Day Beneath The Sun", "Patterns in the Ivy (one and two)", and Harvest. They are simple, yet defined - each with a different emotional texture, derelict of pre-recollection.

Damnation was good, but juxstaposed to the normal Opeth acoustic work and the above mentioned..it really wasn't that Opethy. I was also told that GR is an experimental album? Har..har..

I really wasn't to crazy for this album at first, but it grew on me fast. TGC was a wierd song for them to release as a "single" but now that I listen to the rest of the album, its the only song that they could have released first.

Damn it.
This is not Opeth's best album.
It seems to be a mish-mash of many things, little influences here and there all hammered into a whole. The tracks have good parts and bad parts. Some of the heavier stuff is very Still Life. Some of the mellow stuff borrows heavily from their Patterns in the Ivy-type stuff and Dream Theater (as ably pointed out by Richard, the wankpot).
All in all, I'm a bit hacked off. I can't escape the fact that I've heard it all before, from different places, in different contexts. Deliverance and Damnation were excellent ideas for a band who seem to be eventually grinding the ideas they have, because they had very clear premises. The sounds were very distinct, and captured my interest admirably.
But this stuff? I never thought I'd say this about an Opeth album... but this is pretty goddamn lukewarm.

When the fuck did Opeth sign to Roadrunner Records?! And recruit a fucking keyboardist?
Opeth were my favourite band for years but not long after Deliverance was released, I just stopped caring for them. I didn't even realize that they were going to release another album till today.
I'm quite interested in how Ghost Reveries sounds but I'm still kind of shocked that they're with Roadrunner now. My generalised opinion is that for years now, Roadrunner's lineup consists of bands that aren't worth my time listening to before deciding they're shit.
What turned me off Opeth was how thier worst albums IMO, Deliverance and Damnation, got the most commercial success to the point that nu-metal kids, whose main diet was Static-X and System Of The Down, bought these albums. It's not that being well known and heard is bad, it's just annoying that Opeth is the only legitimate death metal band being heard by nu-metallers/Kerrang kids and they didn't seem to make any fucking attempt to show what else death metal has to offer. Now that they've gone to Roadrunner, it seems like they've turned their backs on the death metal scene. I know it's probably not the case but it just appears like that.
From previous posts, it seems like GR isn't really pushing the boundaries and the Opeth sound is so familiar that it simply doesn't standout from previous albums anymore. I would love to see Opeth open an album with a 30-40 second song that was as brutal and as intense as Defeated Sanity or Hate Eternal and grab people by the fucking throat (I doubt the drummer could handle it though). It would also break this fucking 10 minute long epic song regime that Mikael's been feverishly masturbating over for years, which is wearing fucking thin.
I'll still probably buy Ghost Reveries when it's released and I should really listen to some of their new songs before saying anything but the overall opinion of this album seems like it definately isn't the greatest album in the fucking world.

Ill agree that it isnt the greatest album ever.....but what are you talking about?!?!?!
Youd like to see Opeth do a brutal song.....that makes about as much sense as Morbid Angel.....or Deicide doing something mellow?
Bands are a certain type of metal for a reason.....You dont see dream theater doing something death metal....and for a good reason.
And they just happened to get commercial succes...if any...from damnation and deliverance...do you think they just did it for publicity???? To bid you farewell off of Morningrise, is fucking mellow as hell and they still put it out.
I dont understand where you are coming from on any of this
