Ok well here is what I have here guy's. Me and 2 other guy's plan to set up a small recording room. One of the guys has a huge bonus room that is not getting used in his house so he want's to set up recording stuff so that we can lay down our own tracks and cd, etc. Here is what I have. He has a new computer with a good sound card, video card and whatnot, I have Cool Edit Pro 2.
Now if we wan't to record and have pretty good sound quality with the Cool Edit Pro 2 then what do we need to plug into the PC and how should we do it? For the drums (since I play both lead guitar and drums) I have an acoustic set that can get miced or I have an electric set which would be much easier to plug straight into the PC if I need to do that.
So basically what I am asking is...
1.) What's the best way to plug into the PC with all the stuff to get good sound quality?
2.) Can I lay tracks over eachother with Cool Edit Pro 2?
3.) What are all the things I need to plug into the PC?

I have a few more questions too on this but I don't want to ask a ton at once. Also our budget isn't too great so we can't afford things over a grand here. We are trying to stay in the budget under 800 bucks or so I am guessing.

1.You're gonna need some kind of Audio interface to plug all you're mics, guitars..etc into, plugging straight into you're pc sounds shit. I personally use a Tascam US 122 which is a small interface, has 2 mic inputs and two guitar inputs but I'd say you're gonna need something bigger with like 8 inputs.

2. I'm not sure about cool edit pro, I don't use it.

3. Basically an interface is all you NEED. I'm fairly new to home recording myself so my setup is very basic, I'm sure you could get some suitable gear for $800, check out the tascam site and have a look around, maybe post a message on their forum for some advice, they have heaps of very capable people over there.

get a tascam dm 3200, buy the firmwire extention for it.
buy a 6 pin firewire port for your computer and get cubase sx 2 or 3
and your ready to rock!

What you need to do is buy some black sweat pants, some black sweat shirts, put panyhose on ur face and rob and Office Depot to get the things that you want. While you're there. get me a better soud card, because my compyuter is slowing down with Cool Edit. Get me a better soundcard wnand I will get u candy.

What's suffering is your CPU and memory, not the soundcard.

I'm getting the Tascam us-122 in a few days too. i'll have some clips of it with my Engl 530 DI'd

Is this list right? If so then around how much should this run me and what kind of quality am I looking at?
Any suggestions on the mics to get? I don't have money for the most high end stuff out there and then again I don't wanna go with the cheapest pieces of shit out there either.

Anyone with a Tascam US-122...how do I configure things to moniter with my computer speakers? i'd use the direct monitering but they decided to use freakin' RCA jacks and my computer speakers use a single male 1/8 plug....do i have to buy a converter for it to work or is there a way to get the sound i'm playing into the tascam to come out of my computer speakers?

im not exactly sure, but i think there should be a setting for that at the mizxer (atleast my cpu has a mixer icon shortcut button thingy in the bottom right, and there i can select wich thing to turn of and on, for playing and recording aswell, if u dont have the recording thingy buttos switch shortcut blabla then i dont know (it probaly came with my soundcard, im a complete cpu noob so)

it's probablly just the shitty program it came with...limewire isnt yielding good results for higher end programs though >_>
