Does changing tunings often deteriorate the life of strings? Also, say I put in a fresh set of strings and tune to E standard, but afterwards I decide to drop it to D or C... if I had originally decided to tune to D or C instead of E, would I have more string tension than if I first tuned to E then dropped it? Just some things I was thinking about... I like the crunchiness of hard strings, and since I plan to use mostly D and C on my electric, I think tuning to E first would make the lower tunings flimsier... Am I being a little too paranoid here?

Dude, chill the fuck out and just play your guitar! I guess it could possibly make it a bit looser, but it wouldnt be anything noticable. and no..... changing tunings often does not fuck up strings, what fucks up strings is shredding. i just changed my strings a few days ago and they are already rusty. Thats just part of playing. Just stop worring about your strings and go shred.

if ur planning to play d and c most of the time, dont bother tuning to E, i mean y would u

if u like hard strings as i call it get some gauge u like for D and C and use those.

The reason for your strings going rusty is that the room your guitar in is too humid, and/or you buy shitty strings in the first place. Simply playing your strings won't make them rusty

It was a fair enough question, Soeru, and obviously it'd be a little better to put them straight into your desired tuning, but you're not gonna notice a difference to be honest

If you are playing in D and C the only thing that you have to worry about is fucking up the intonation. If it is a floating bridge (i.e. floyd rose) then you are going to need to change the tension the springs underneith to make of for the lack of tension from the strings...Yeah

Also, the sweat from your fingers causes the strings to rust. A good can of string lubricant will prolong string life.

but yeah, tuning up and down alot will stretch out the strings, making them flopsy for lower tunings. Another thing, if you're using strings which have a larger gauge than what your guitar was built for, changing of tunings will increase chances of warping... i just found this out the other day... if you change from 9-42, and move to 10-48, you increase the tension by about 30 pounds...

yeah ernieballs sound ok for maybe 1 or 2 weeks, then there shit, then are gone in no time. i prefer DR stringas, they feel the same as earnieballs, but they last and sound good longer

if u have 10,9,or 8 gauge. then only down tune ur bottom strings, cuz ur top strings after a while will snap.

If you're playing in D and C I would go for 10s or 11s.
I had 10s on my Ibanez and used it for E Eb and D changing quite regularly and I'm now using 12s and tuning to B and sometimes Bb. Never had any problems.

ive notice that guitar sometimes depends on the tightness of the strings, wel i mean..
on my jackson usa, i played in D with 011 and in E with 010, on my ibanez, i play in D with 010, wich feel the same as 011 in D on my jackson

all guitars are different, so justfidle around with string sizes untill you feel comfortable with them, i played in B with friking 10s on my Strat remake

i say that if your gonna be chaning from E to D to C often then get the stuff thats most comfortable with D tuning so that it can handle all 3 of them pretty equally... also how many guitars do you have? cause then you could get good strings for just 1 tuning and intonat it and stuff like that and make that you guitar for just that tuning...

also, if you start of in E and change to D, its the same tension you get if you went straight to D in the first place...

I did that the other day after i broke a string, because i hadnt downtuned past standard D.

I think it was probably in A actually, by the time i decided to re-tune.
10's in A... Sure made bending easy

I dont think that changing tunings often ruins strings. If you start off in E, they stretch a certain amount. Then if you tune down at all, its just releasing tension, so i cant see how it would do any damage.

I have had Earnie Ball .11-54 guage and they're still fine, no idea what the hell you're talking about. I have mine in C# right now, It could handle C(2 steps) well, but Bb after a while got a bit flimsy. I might need .13's for that. I'm going to use D and Eb from now on on mine at least most of the time, too bad I only have one guitar.
