Mellow, depressive music
I'm looking for very mellow depressive music. Please exclude things like Burzum and all thoes black metalk bands, I already know about them. I'm speaking more of non-metal stuff. I don't want just mellow, chell music, it has to be depressive.
Incase youre wondering, I'm aksing this because my music collection can basicly accomadate however I'm feeling, except depressed. This is because I'm quite a happy person, but lately I've wanted some melancholy stuff, so help a brotha out.

Well right off the bat I'd suggest Anathema's Natural Disaster.
They used to be sorta doom metal but took a more Porcupine Tree kinda turn and now make mellow tracks, some of which are the most depressing things I've ever heard.
Especially these few, of which are also off Natural Disaster:
#4 on ND is called " Are You There " Has a haunting kind of lost hope feeling.
The last two songs tie in together, Electricty, which creates an atmosphere of helplessness, especially when he sings " electricty drew you near to me, but what you needed was to be rid of me " and fades brilliantly into the final song, an instrumental called violence, which seems everything but the said title.
Most of the songs, except "Pulled Under At 2000 Meters A Second" Are very atmoshperic, mellow and when my uncle died I listened to nothing but this album when I was depressed for days and it helped, I think?
But whatever, when i'm depressed I find myself coming back to this album constantly.

Anathema is an excellent suggestion. Check out Candlemass, they are considered metal....but are very depressing. Also, Solitude Aeturnus might be right up your alley.

Thanks, please suggest specific albums, not just bands. I use bittorrent so I download full albums, not just individual songs.

Yes, Anathema is a good choice, for mellow stuff, "a natural disaster" should be good.
Novembers Doom is a metal band, but one wich makes nice haunting songs, check out "The Haunting"
I think I remember you didn't like Opeth, but try out "Damnation", it is not exactly depressed, but it has good atmosphere, kinda adds to whatever emotion you are feeling. Or try A perfect circle - "mer de noms", it is also not very depresed, but if you feel bad, it is a good match.
If you want realy depressed, check out annything made by the Joy Division, don't listen to it too long, we don't want you to kill yourself

Doom metal!
Well as a song non-metal, I know thoe song "Lara Fabian - the Dream Witihn" from the final fantasy soundtrack and it is really a good choice for a depressing song...
More into metal, you could always try the 30-beats-per-minute funeral doom metal, with bands like Shape Of Despair (especially the album "Angels Of Distress")

Katatonia, early and latter. Brave Murder Day, and I can only recomend Teargas EP from their other work, maybe check out albums from around that era.
Also,MY DYING BRIDE, FOOL.Everything except 38.somerandomnumber% complete.
The Eternal's Sombre Light Of Isolation, and you might want to check out their newer album.
November's Doom are also cool. I also like Opeth when I'm depressed.

Rapture- The Silent Stage
Rapture- Futile
Daylight Dies- Idle
Daylight Dies- No Reply
Dark Suns- Swanlike
Dark Suns- Existence
Pain of Salvation has a lot of very emotive lyrics, but the music may not necessarily be depressing
October Tide- Rain Without End
October Tide- Grey Dawn
Mourning Beloveth are depressing (but I'm not sure if its because of the music or how boring they are )
Anathema was a good suggestion, but in addition to Natural Disaster, I'd get the album Judgement (the song One Last Goodbye= )

No one mentioned Agalloch or Green Carnation; and if you want specific Katatonia stuff:
Jhva Elohim Meth
Dance of December Souls
For Funerals to Come
Saw You Drown
Sounds of Decay
Discouraged Ones
Tonight's Decision
Last Fair Deal Gone Down
Viva Emptiness
BMD really isn't that depressing. Not nearly as much as the other stuff.

Metal has much of this depressive music, just listen to Bethlehem (Dictius te Necare), old Mütiilation (Remains of a Ruined Dead Cursed Soul) and Katatonia (Dance of December Souls) or some that are 'harder to get into' since they represent much deeper form of art; Thergothon (Stream from the Heaven...duh!) sand Skepticism (any album, I think).
But for music that's not metal, I'd find these good (however I can't guarantee that they would be really depressive, but very dark) :
Lustmord - Heresy
+any other.
Tangerine Dream - Zeit
Nowadays 'not-dark' and I haven't heard any other from their past days. So I can't really recommend any other. Zeit is good, very gloomy and depth.
Raison d'être - Within the Depths of Silence and Phormations
I haven only heard this from them, but I've heard from people, their other music is also quite similar.
Then there are these black legions stuff which dameframorkum said, but they seriously lacks from the bad quality of production and from the lack of musical talents. They sure have some feeling, but in the end these elements ruins much. However if just downloading, at least give them a shot - I wouldn't waste money on them (though it's just me).

I actually listened to " One last goodbye " by Anathema today for the first time, and yeah it was pretty depressing, just look at the title
I'm definitely gonna go pick up Judgement the next chance I get, the only albums by Anathema I have are Serenades, Alturnative 4 and Natural Disaster.
Also, if you REALLY wanna go out on a limb for some more depressing stuff, you can find a plug in for winamp that allows you to play Playstation ripped psf. Files.
Get the Xenogears Soundtrack, songs like " Faraway Promise " are pretty depressing, going along with that lost hope kinda feeling.
Other depressing music I know from Animes are a song from the Show Wolf's Rain, one song its called " Heaven's Not Enough " and another is " Gravity "
Also, if you wanna go over-board, the Anime Cowboy Bebop has a song called
" Blue " they're all relatively easy to find if you know where to look.
There was some good suggestions here, so good luck with your search.

oooo
well If you like anything acoustic and depressing I would tell you to either get Death cab for Cutie's album "Transatlanticism" but anything by bright eyes is probably more appropriate. It's the most depressing music ever, but it's well written and sickly beautiful. makes me wanna kill myself. He sings like he means it too. here are some lyrics from the album "Fevers and mirrors" (my personal favorite album ever) :
"The Movement Of A Hand"
You follow the footsteps echoes leading down a hall to a room. There is music playing tiny
bells with moving parts. Here the shadows make things ugly, an effect quite undesirable. The
bold and yellow daylight grows like ivy across the wall and bounces off of the painted porcelain,
tiny dancing doll. Her body spins, as she pirouettes again, the world suddenly seems small. On
an off white, subtle morning you stretch your legs in the front seat. The road has made a vacuum
where our voices used to be. And you lay your head onto my shoulder, pour like water over me.
So if I just exist for the next ten minutes of this drive that would be fine. And all the trees that line
this curb would be rejoicing and alive. Soon all the joy that pours from everything makes
fountains of your eyes because you finally understand the movement of a hand waving you good-bye.

another song that rules by bright eyes is from the album "Letting off the happiness"
"A Poetic Retelling Of An Unfortunate Seduction"
the language in the dimmer rooms seems to represent its light source well
how soft they speak and seem to be at peace
with the movement of the music and the madness that is pulling me into this
and the shades of the lamps are woven red
the light, it stains and consecrates
anointing all forgotten forms that swirl and smoke
and haunt this place
the girls in gowns all nurse the dark
pulling it near to their swelling breasts
and watch as it seeps to their hearts
and beats within their virgin chests
and here i know seduction breeds from wanton hearts that would
seduce and grows and spreads its vine
and leaves embracing those who might have moved
but now we're made to drink the night from vials black and thick
with such intoxicating delights would leave you drunk
inside this dream
and you watch them take the light from you
and you find yourself on a velvet couch
tasting the skin of a foreign girl
her eyes are black and wet like oil
and she ties your hands with a string of pearls
and you tremble like a frightened bird
as she closes in and captures you to place you
in a silver cage deep within her poisoned womb
so once your safe inside, she might let you out
to fly in circles around the room
but its always night and there is no moon
and you wonder if you are alive
and you're not sure if you want to be
but you drink her sweat like it was wine
and you lay with her on a bed of blue and its awful sweet
like the fruit she cuts and feeds to you

Yeah, I'm into Atmoshere. Pretty damn good for a white minnesota boy.
Dead: I'm going to suggest anything Post Rock. I'll trade some albums through AIM with you if you want. You just have to get on early enough in the day or night for me to have the time to send/recieve. There are a few (fuck, about 6) albums that you have that I want. I'll work on getting a list of albums.

If you're lookign for depressing non-metal music then the best genres to listen to are neo-classical/darkwave, neo-folk and dark ambient. Some of my favorite albums from these genres are:
Aghast - Hexerei im Zwielicht der Finsternis
All My Faith Lost - As You're Vanishing in Silence
Arcana - The Last Embrace
Current 93 - Soft Black Stars
Dark Sanctuary - Funeral Cry
Darkwood - Weltenwende
Death In June - Operation Hummingbird
In Slaughter Natives - Purgate My Stain
Lord Wind - Heralds of Fight
Lustmord - Heresy
Nature & Organization - A Dozen Summers Against The World
Northaunt - The Ominous Silence
Of The Wand & The Moon - Algiz
Ordo Rosarius Equilibrio - Conquest, Love & Self Perseverance
Sol Invictus - The Hill Of Crosses
The Soil Bleeds Black - Quintessence
Check out Vinterriket and Paysage D'Hiver too (although some of these are black metal)
Ok so my list turned out alot bigger than I imagined, but there are so many stand-out albums in my opinion.

King Crimson --Court of the Crimson King
Traffic --When the Eagle Flies, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys
Strawbs --Ghosts (most of it), Nomadness (most of it)
Genesis --Selling England By the Pound
Some of those are my favorites from way back. Some of them suit mutliple moods, but they're great for a "dismal, rainy day" feeling.

Check out forest stream, that stuff is pretty dark and depressive, their CD's called Tears of Mortal Solitude. Yea, its doom metal, but if your looking for something depressing, this is what i recommend.

i suggest Godspeed You, Black Emopror!, there really mellow, calms me down to the point where i dont even wanna talk, all instrumental too, exept for some spoken word and one song where theres a quiet country intro the guy who sounds like Johny Cash says "...stick my finger in a babys eye." ahahaha!
besides that, lots of led zeppelin i find deppressing/mellow, Rain Song for instints
Alice in Chains, Rotten Apple or Rooster unplugged
some Steve Vai stuff, like Sisters, i find relaxing
and if you can find it, the 90th anniversay of Tama drumms and Ibanez guitars show with Andy Timmons, Steve Vai, and Paul Gilbert, and some drummer who i forget, but Andys 2 songs are great mellow tracks
Satch stuff, like cool #9
Black Label Society, like In This River, Dirt On the Grave, and all the piano things
Panteras Floods
Slayers Spill the Blood (never would have though Slayer would be on here eh?)
Megadeths I Though I Knew It All or Addicted To Chaos
Metallicas Nothing Else Matters
thats all the deppressing music i listen to, exept some unplugged Nirvana, but i know none of you like them

Pink Floyd has some good sad stuff. Just about any albums...but the first specific songs that come to mind are Wish You Were Here (which is the name of the album) and Mother (the Wall, I believe)
Vermilion Pt. 2 off of Volume 3 by Slipknot is pretty sad, and it's a good song
Lonely Stranger, Eric Clapton Unplugged
A Tout Le Monde, Megadeth Youthanasia
I can't believe with all the talk about doom metal and such, nobody has yet mentioned Crowbar...I'd suggest Sonic Excess in its Purest Form, or ...Odd Fellows Rest
Metallica has some good depressive songs...Fade to Black off of Ride the Lightning, One off of ...And Justice For All, Nothing Else Matters off of the black album, which I believe was previously stated...
Oh Fuck! Rocketman and I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues by the almight Elton John. I don't know what albums they're on, but they kick ass.
That's all I can think of for now, but if you want more, ask me.

That damn woman and her antics. She'll be spending a week and a half on the porch when I get home, so you all won't have to put up with her as much. What all songs did she have you get?

Check out a UK band by the name The River, some good doom there- droning guitar, slow drums, female vocals. Good stuff, doomriver.co.uk or .com, something like that

how about the Cure?
The first depressive band i listened to, although they werent always really depressive. Disintegration and Pornography are great i guess. Prayers for Rain is for some reason one of my favourite songs of all time.
