8 String Guitar
So the other day i was sitting around listening to "I" by Meshuggah when i realize, hey, they do a pretty good job with an 8 string guitar so maybe i should try it out. So now comes my question, does anyone know of a place to buy an 8 string guitar? Preferably 500-600 maybe 650. But, i started out as a bass player so i am a pretty big fan of the low end. I looked and MF and Music 123 and they seem to only have 7 strings so im not sure where else to look. The only problem is, i dont know if there will be any in my price range, but if you can, go for it. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure you have to get them custom made. so, that will be expensive.

Thats all I've ever seen too. Custom made 8 string guitars. I don't think there is a really big demand for anything more then 7 strings so good luck finding a stock made one.

That would probably be only a custom made one, and it'll be much more than 500-600. Good luck.

Yesterday I ordered my new 8 string guitar from conklin. For that price range your are setting you will never find an 8 string guitar.... I looked too for cheaper guitars but didn't find any... so I went with custom made....

Cool guitar! 28 frets... wow! What does a melted fretboard and headstock look like?
Also I seen you got the tune-o-matic bridge but it said it was not available on 8 string models. I didn't know if you had noticed that or not.

thank you.... can't wait to get it!
the melted fretboard looks similiar to this http://www.conklinguitars.com/bizar...nedfretmelt8jpg
the tune o matic bridge was my mistake.... bolded the wrong thing....
Non-locking tremolo and Sperzel locking tuners
I guess that was my choice..... but have still much time to decide
what would you change with the specs?

I think the woods and hardware are all great choices. The only thing I would suggest different would be the bridge. They say they would mill a custom trem bridge for $1500, but I know I would get a Kahler trem.
Kahler USA will also make you a custom bridge to spec if you ask them, but I have no ideal how much it would cost. I ( as well as many others ) consider Kahler to be the best trem bridges ever made.
Edit:That and I would get a Flying V body shape with everything black... so black, lol

i think 8 strings for a guitar (or more) is kind of rediculous. i mean, the 7 sting was cool, and a good idea, but, like zertonshfits once said, if you want to get that low of tunings, just quit and play bass. but then again , i do like meshuggah...

See, i do play bass and that is the thing, i want a guitar because i like the high end and the soloing capabilities n such (not to say you cant solo with a bass, i love primus) but i also love the bass so i want an instrument that covers a large spectrum. and there is no way i can get a custom, it took me about 8 months to get this $400 i have now man...i suppose i may just have to settle for a 7 or just wait till im gettin some more dinero and get an 8 then...thanks anyways guys
or i could go the custom route, i could make one...i mean i have the stuff to do it but...so my new question is, does anyone know where i could get 8 string guitar pickups/bridges/necks? I can do the body myself, i have access to a plotter (a huge printer to print the outline of the body i want) and i have access to the power tools necessary. But getting the other parts i need might be pretty expensive. Well, any help would be appreciated, thx

Buy a baritone guitar, and tune it down to F ( that's Meshuggah's lowest note on their 8 stringers ). It will feel like a standard six string guitar tuned down to A ( I've down this before, and it does indeed work ).

That is an alternative, altough you miss the high end for the soloing

Well, Conklin did make, for a very short period of time and in limited numbers a production model 8string. You'd have to buy used and it would be at least double your budget but, yeah, thats no help at all
For that amount of money, I'd look into a baritone 7string if you want to replicate the tone and fit it with Lundgren 7 string pickups (the same ones Meshuggah use).

Yo, Meshuggah use Nevborn 8-string guitars. The model is the Sleipner XL which is like a permutation of the Sleipner I, customised for Mssrs. Hagstrom and Thorendahl. I asked Mr. Nevborn how much he would make me a lefty version (yes, I'm a lefty) for. "Same prize" he said and with that spelling error.
$3000. Nevborn would easily do the job with less expensive gear if you asked him. Check his website www.nevbornguitars.com (or .net, forgotten). He's got a whole range, including this insane 13-string thing, and the sweetest heavy metal guitar ever.
Meshuggah's deadly Nothing tone is also available at Lundgren Pickups. The Model M was customised for Thorendahl for 7-string guitars. Priced at 195 euroes.
Hey, anyone know an abundant source of lefty 7-strings that would import to the UK or in the UK?

in fact, everybody thinks 8 string guitars are hard to play on..... others think you don't need more then 6 strings....
well I can tell you..... It never felt so easy to play on a 8 string guitar (better than on a 6 string).... and palying is very comfortable (no need for big hands)..... its easier to make solos because with the 7 and 8th string you can play a wider range of scales..... you also have the possibility to play really low.... from the lowest string (F) to the highest string (e).....
the only questionable thing is the price....
I can tell you.... I buy this guitar instead of a car.....

yes it is cool to see a guy do 8 and 9 string sweeps and it does give you a little bit of wider range but is low F really nessasary? i mean, B is damn low IMO but, F? geez might as well get a double guitar with the bottom guitar being a bass...

Thank you.

Beleive it or not, but you can make your own. eight string replacement neck, and drill 1 more holes in it and run the new strings into holes about 6 inches behind the pickups.
but i sure as hell wouldn't do it unless i had a cheap starter guitar.

What about the body where the neck joins, the bridge, and the pickups?

ESP makes a decent one, Im sure this is what your looking for because people are confused on what 8-strings actually are. They are not like 7-strings at all. Its a 6-string basiclly strung up like a 12 with the 2 low strings doubled up. Here is a link to the pic.

We are talking about 8-strings as in two strings added besides the normal 6, not the 2 octave strings you show.

What we're talking about is like a 7 string, with an extra 'whole' string
Thats still quite cool though, would be quite nice for cleans
