what wattage?
what would be a good amount to do small gigs with like at pubs and slightly bigger sized venues? there is a nice 40 watt all valve marshall i have seen second hand for a good price. will this be adequatly loud? or should i go for something louder?

40 watts should be good if its a 2x12 combo. If its only a single you might want to get an extention 2x12 for practice witha drummer. Playing gigs, you will almost in every situation be having your amp miced and ran through a PA. And because of this you cant crank 100 watt tube amps. This way, you have 40 watts tubes and shoudl be able to really crank it to get nice tube saturation. I'd go with it.

As long as it's all tube, 40 watts should suit you fine.

i have a 45 watt SS practice amp... and it keeps up with the drummer just fine at about 8 oclock

I'm assuming this is for a guitar amp...
If possible, you may want to go a bit higher than 40 watts, this way you're not overpushing the amp to compete with the drums, bass, etc. When you push an amp too hard, sound quality tends to be lost.

Thats solid state. When you push solid state, it tends to break up, tahts why there are 300 watt solid state heads out there, because they have shitty headrom at low watts. Tube amps just get better the more they are pushed.

Solidstate: sounds good at low volumes, sounds like shit at high volumes
Tubes: sounds ok at low volumes, sounds orgasmic at high volumes
