I jammed my finger, hence the thread. I can still play guitar, yet I feel if I keep doing so it will only be a detriment in the future. I am afraid of damaging tendons. Of course, this is on my fretting hand or else I wouldn't bother looking for advice.

Doctors simply tell me to take ibuprofen and rest it in a splint. Well, is this the best thing I can do for it. It is really putting a halt to further progress regarding speed solos as I use this finger alot(ring finger) to pull of/hammer on and such.

Let it heal....take a break.

I saw the first word of this thread and I felt your pain man...you just gotta let it cool off. Its happened a few times to me, I just stretch it out here and there....basically my own physical therapy....just nurture it and take care of it...lol

Playing guitar really isnt going to delay the healing process, its just gonna hurt a lot. Play until you think it hurts too much, then stop... pushing it too hard is the only way it will increase the damage done.

Just try some simple exercises with and without that finger.. you should let it rest and heal a bit tough

Happened to me plenty of times,like brains said do some exercises without using that finger,like a chord where you have to mute a string with your ring finger.Its actually helped me to jam mine sometimes cause I will try other things I normally would'nt.

I'm currently splinting it up. I can not just stop playing guitar and let it heal. I am sure many of you here are addicted to shred....I just can't help myself. Thank you all for the replys.

id say masage it before and after playing, dont overwork it.

also pain is a warning that something is wrong, so if u can play without pain, play on, when i starts to hurt stop, take a rest.

my recommendation is keep playing, keep playing harder and faster.
fuck the splint, what do doctors know anyway?
keep going through the pain. it will make you play faster than you can imagine.
then, once you have snapped a tendon or two, and realise that you physically are unable to play guitar any longer, you will want to kill yourself.
in which case, you have my wholehearted support.

Best bet. You won't hurt anything else this way. Your speed will suffer a little until you are fully better, but its a small price to pay as opposed to having to stop altogether.

Actually, I am just resting it and taking anti-inflammitory(sp?) as to well....I guess ease the swelling. It is not jammed so bad that it is black and blue and all swollen and such. It doesn't even hurt anymore. I played guitar for 3-4 hours today rehearsing with my band, and I play lead which means soloing is no stranger to myself. Thanks for the laugh though.

Or by jammed, do you mean jammed in something. for example door, oven ect ect

I played guitar for around 10 hours a day for three days in a row after it was slightly jammed by a blunt object. The consistent playing only made the slight jam worse than it already was. Stupid on my part, yet my heart was in the right place. I don't want to go on stage feeling insecure about my soloing.

I may sound crazy, but I used to jam my fingers all the time playing sports, and our coach would have us pull on the jammed finger as soon as we jammed it. Don't pull it super hard, but pull it hard enough you feel slight relief. This will prevent the jam from hurting as much and lasting as long. Hope this helps
