A good tip for Black Metal vox
First off as you probably know, screaming is better than growling for black metal but growling is still a very cool technique to use in BM. secondly, It is very important to also use effects (distortion mainly, i use a boss ds-1 with full distortion and tone). I know effects are usually looked down upon in the vocal world but you wouldn't say someone is a bad guitarist for using effects. It is the same with vocals. And third, never sing too loud. Thats what volume knobs are for. If you sing an extreme style too loud you won't be singing much longer as it will mess up your throat. Okay thats it hope it helps someone.

yeah. except guitar needs distortion and i appreciate a vocalist much more who doesnt use vocalists, because they can achieve that sound through physical exertion and not pedal turning. the advice itself is ok, but its been said before and in the screaming/grwoling thread

I scream incredibly loud. I do both Death and Black metal vocals. I do harsh, deep, guttural vocals, and I also do shred throat high end Black metal screams in the vein of Sargeist or Mutiilation. If you train your voice right, you won't ruin it. However, alot of people do ruin their throats doing vocals. That dude from Marduk is a fine example.
Distortion can sound fucking cool on vocals.

Growling loud as you can makes you sound like Krisiun or Morbid Angel/Dave Vincent. Growling soft makes you sound like Chris Barnes--and Chris Barnes sucks ass at growling.
