Favorite Bass Tone
What are some of your favorite bass tones of all time? I like the Overkill bass sound on "The Years of Decay." I like the sound on all of the Mudvayne albums. I also like Iron Maiden's bass sound, Disturbed, RATM, and some others. What are your favs?

Ld.50 definetely has a nice and very unique bass tone, because Ryan did put his bass through his bass cab (ampeg) and his guitarists cab for that treble and mid tone.. very nice tone though, and the ultimate tone of all..
Papa roach!
There bassist has an unbeleivable bass tone, yeah i know there not metal, but listen to the tone of it! its a real bassy nice fingerstyle tone, love it.

Non fingerstyle tone, but slap bass tone - Mark King, Victor Wooten, Stu Hamm, Robert randolph and the family band, Red hot chili peppers.
Also jaco's tone is very good.

Jesus, Bill. Us "Bill's" seem to like one brand of something, and swear by it. I swear by Ibanez, and you are all over Warwick's nuts.

I really like the bass sound on Anthrax's "Among the Living". Does anyone know if he uses light distortion or have any idea how he gets that sound?
By the way give that album a listen, paying attention to the basslines. He reminds me of what Steve Harris would sound like if he used a pick. He MUST be influenced by Maiden.

My personal favourite would HAVE to be Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse. His Modulus 5-string bass sounds amazing, pumped through the classic Ampeg SVT and 8x10. He turns up the gain just a hair, to give it a very clean, yet SLIGHTLY warm/fuzzy tone to it. It cuts through beautifully!
As for Anthrax and Among the Living: an amazing CD all around, but especially the bass lines. I think he does the same thing as Webster (albeit 20 years earlier...lol) and just turns up the gain a bit. Overdriving the pre-amp section of your head will give you that sound, but if you overdo it, it'll sound like shit...not to mention sending a square-wave signal to your speakers, causing the voice coil to jump the magnetic gap and blowing your speaker cab...(speaking from experience here...grrrrrr)
Cheers.

The Stone Temple Pilots guy gets a really good tone out of his gear. Especially for a Fender.

Anything with p-style pick ups (IBANEZ, B.C.RICH, or WARWICK). I hate the tone i get from j-style (unless it is a p/j-style combination) and soap bar pick ups. I think there is just something missing if there is not a p-stye pick up.

I have the absolute opposite opinion to you on tone and pickups, J's and Soapbars sound lush, and i dislike the P pickup tone, but each to there own.

I'm with Bill...I can get way more depth out of J and Soapbars. P's sound too punchy and metallic for my tastes. It has to be smooth.

The sound i most try to emulate is probably Eric Langlois' on None So Vile, heavy but with all the lows (Graves Of The Fathers) and highs (break in Slit Your Guts) nice and clear.
But best bass tone of all time for me is probably Geezer Butler's sound on Master Of Reality.

Cannibal Corpse lol
Ive never really liked them... mostly because I dont like the vocals.
The bass never impressed me...
Tom from Slayer is a fuckin mad man tho! Have some respect! Some of the riffs he plays while he's "singing"(yelling at the top of his lungs ) are nuts!

lars from spiral architect gets some nice clean tones out even during crazy riffs ( same with sean from cynic, and roger from atheist). Jaco Pastorius... duh. Victor Wooten has amazing tone. Crisp, clean, and sometimes a little murky and phased. Alex webster has a cool low really treble heavy tone.
My own tone is pretty good ( not to be cocky or anything) but I have a really nice custom effect on my bp-80 and as long as I have a nice amp it comes out good.

No, first get off his case, if your going to prove someone wrong or bring up a point, make sure youve got it right first.

that isnt true man, come on how about Lars from spiral architect, his lines are sometimes like the guitars but most of the time completely different( in the same key.
In the band im in I play different bass parts half of the time, and guitar parts the other half.
Dont get me wrong John Myung is freaking awesome. I even sketched a picture of him once for art class.
