hi.
at the moment i am running a little crappy marshall amp with a jackson dunky with 2 humbukers. the tonal qualitieas are holding me back and also since i am sort of in a band and gigging might be a possibility then i would like a better more distorted tone. my favorite tones from bands are: slayer, dying fetus, nile, morbid angel, monstrosity,obituary, napalm death. etc etc.
so naturally i have decided some new gear is in order.
i want a new amp, new pickups, an eq, and some distorsion pedals.

for the amp i have thought about a randall g2, an ashdown fallen angel, a marshall jcm combo and a line 6 spider series. what one would be best for the tones that i want?

for the pickups i have in mind the emg 85 and the 81. but for the moment i will only get one so what one would be better to put in bridge position?

as for the eq i have seen the kfk1 mxr 10 band equaliser (kerry king signature)
are these good? has anyone played them? what are there tonal possibilitys?

and the distorsion pedal. i have not realy looked into this but do you think that the amp would have significant enough distorsion for the tones i have in mind? or do you think i should get one? and if so what one for the tones i want?

oh and also do you think it would be worth getting some sort of smartgate type thing for managing all the distorsion?

I'd either get the Marshall combo, or the Ashdown head. As for the pickups, the 81 in the bridge should be ok. If i were you'd i'd stay away from the signature kfk EQ, just get a standard well recommended one, im not sure about which though. And the gate is probably a good idea too You may want to get a tube overdrive pedal, but you don't want a 'distortion' pedal like MT-2 etc.

In my opinion the only way a pedal can be put to good use is by running an MT-2 through the effects loop of your amp head, and using its EQ to shape your sound further ... I know Scott Hull ( Pig Destroyer ) does this, and I think one of Cannibal Corpse's guitarists has done this.

But that's really the only good use of a distortion pedal in a live rig, in my opinion.

MT 2 is never good pawn it off to a newb if you have one

if you want kerry kings sound then do a search, its been done before.
his sound is not DM.
for that, almost any high gain amp will do you good, if you want a real low down heavy sound like napalm, use a mesa dual rec.

for pups... id say get the sd's or dimarzios, im really dissapointed with my emg's... the only time i'd reccommend getting the EMG's, is if you have an agathis body guitar... or a general piece of shit. If your guitar is alder, some sd's should do you fine...
