Does your bridge have saddles and little allen key things in them? more importantly did you get a little plastic tool bag with your bass (about 2-3 allen keys in it for adjusting the setup of your bass) ? if so use them to adjust the height/saddles .. either lower or higher on your bridge and that should sort out the way you want it.

Of course you do realize that this will only adjust the height of the strings which will only make a minimal difference in how far they are apart right ? ...

I say do away with it. You can always stand in its former location if you need to make use of the perspective it gave you, but will benefit from the ability to situate yourself in different loci with ease.
Destroy the box.

if I understand correctly...

If you are talking about adjusting the spacing of the strings themselves (ie: the distance between the strings themselves as opposed to the height off the fretboard...aka action...) then no. You'd need to buy and install a new bridge with wider spacing, a new nut (again, with wider spacing) and then a new neck, as the strings are usually set about as close to the edge of the fretboard as possible. Any closer to the edge of the neck, and you'll be slipping off the side. If you NEED more spacing between your strings, sell the one you have and buy a bass with a wider neck...it'll be cheaper and much easier than trying to modify the one you have.

Cheers.
