I like playing a lot of slow doomy riffs...but then again I like playing lots of fast gut blasting riffs.. it all depends on what my mind throws down basically.

Melodic doesn't always have to be slow, They're can be some quick, If not finger blistering tempos and keep steady melody.

I think that when you play fast it has to have melody. Because if you don't have any melody then its just a bunch of notes played really fast like.
Now someone else just rephrase the painfully obvious statement I made in a new post below mine.

thats very true.... but in order to develop your own style you need to be andvanced in both areas.... melodic player and speed player... it would be very wrong if you just concentrate on one part, because the guitar is a complex instrument and you should be able to control it in every single way... that makes a good player!!

dude you have to have both to be great..otherwise you suck because with speed it is hard to discern what you are doing so melody is good speed is good but harmony is better

a series of notes is a melody.
see, even when the music is really fast theres still melody in it.
its a question of whether that melody sounds musical or rather, stylistically agreeable or not.
so, playing fast can be as musical as playing slow and with "feeling". or it can be as shit.
as such, i prefer fast music.
