get the mel bay guitar books. altho u may need a teacher to teach you from them, they arent supposed to self taught but they are good books.

That guitar grimoire is the way to go. I got to look at one in a bookstore. It was loaded down with info. The one I read was all about scales and modes, they have several focusing on different parts of your playing.

Yes, I have two of those. One of them belongs to a mexican though. GREAT books, especially the chords one, and the scales at a close second best.

guitar instruction books
I'm sure you already are aware that there's a wealth of resources available on-line (try Googling "shred exercises", "modes", etc....all you need is time and a printer), but the Grimoire series is fantastic - the best move I ever made for my playing was picking up a cheap quartz metronome and the Grimoire "Exercises" book!
I also picked up one of Troy Stetina's Metal Guitar Method books, which had a CD included, and it was pretty helpful! It's mostly for lead playing/shred technique, but also has hints on diatonic scales & learning modes. Here's the link on Amazon, if you're interested.

im leaning towards picking up the grimoire 'exercises' book, but im not sure of my choice between that and the scales book. it isnt too hard to find various positions for most scales online, so if thats the only thing the scales book covers, i'll probably go for the exercises book. what kind of 'exercises' does the book have? im mainly aiming to improve my speed/accuracy at fast alt. picked licks and sweeps.
