Violin bow used on guitar??

Im listening to led zeppelin - hats off to roy harper.

And im wondering if that crazy acoustic sound is done by using a double-bass bow or a violin bow on an acoustic guitar??
In a picture I have them playing, Page is playin with a bow on his guitar, and I always wondered what sound that got.

Cheers

When I first watched 'the song remains the same' I was amazed when Page used the bow on his guitar. It sounded awesome, and I'd try it but the result probably would be the noise equivilant of having your skull bashed in... it'd take skill to pull it off. Maybe one day I'll give it a go though.

Yeah, that was my useless input for today.

How about those E-Bow things or whatever they are called, has anybody tried one of those? I was shocked at the price.

Really I might have to check that out and see. I would like to have one myself but I will not pay what they ask for a new one.

i was just making sure the noise he got was from using a bow like in the picture, i didnt know that he was known for it.

I've never used an e-bow, what exactly do that do?? Someone told me that you use them to sustain a note as long as you want

Basicly it an electro-magnetic device that you use instead of a pick. The magnetism vibrates your strings. You can do all sorts of tricks, including violin-bow like effects, fade-ins, realy weird stuff. If you hold it all the time before your strings, they wil vibrate all the time, thus giving you infinite sustain.

y couldnt you use a regular bow on an electric guitar? it would still vibrate the string, and the pickup would pick it up, and you could sustain infinitly like an acoustic string instrument. it should work...

As expensive as an e-bow is, I think a violin bow would be more expensive.
