If youre paying more than $700 on a guitar, it shouldnt have shitty passive EMGs in it. Thats the only problem, the hardware isnt worth the money.
You could get a $400 guitar and throw new pickups in it, for a total of $600 and have it sound better than that $900 brick.

its a great guitar, but its sooooo overpriced
you can get much better guitars for cheaper
for example
http://www.music123.com/Ibanez-RGT42DXFX-i158861.music
thats awesome, uber thin wizard neck, neck through, 24 frets, fixed bridge, RG BODY!!! the pickups arent great, but with the money you save, get your self a set of real pickups.
its like half the price, go for that dude

After playing everything Guitar Center had in stock I bought the SLSMG Soloist. Almost one year later – no regrets. I did swap out the PUP’s for the EMG Zakk Wylde set but in hindsight, I don’t think the HZ’s really are that bad.
Quality guitar (extremely light/neck thru/string thru/ebony fretboard/white fretboard-headstock binding), very fast neck and sustains for days.
BTW - A friend of mine I recently went to visit in another state has an ESP KH-II and after playing it I could not wait to get back to my Soloist.
But that’s just my opinion.

that's an awesome guitar...
i'd say a pickup swap may be in line... but honestly... even with the hz's, it's not bad.
why jackson doesnt load thse things stock with an 81/85, 81/81/ or 81/60 set is beyond me...
but not all jacksons rock... honestly, the lower end ones are pure garbage...
i really like how this one doesnt have the floyd.

jacksons and emg's are pretty commonly used together... i just don't know why they would put low end emg's in a high end jackson.
emgs are by no means shitty... but hey, they arent for everybody.

I only wish Jackson did what they did with the DK-27 with all of the MG series. And thats fit them with stock high ouput DiMarzio pickups. Real DiMarzio not co designed models like that of Ibanez Prestige models.
Other than that the SLS-MG is a solid guitar, the hardware is great and they play well. My only gripe about it and new, non U.S Jacksons, is the electronics, the quality is pure shit.

I guess thats one way to put it if you like fuzzy and thin sounding pickups.

Thin, the opposite of thick, you know when the tone sounds wiry and unsaturated.

Maybe your problem could be solved with a truss rod adjustment?

I have owned one for about a year and a half and I've never had any problem with it. Its real sweet and its got a nice thin body, perfect for shredding. I did switch out the emg-hzs for a ph-r and hot rails. sounds sick!

I agree. Got that one too and it sounds great. The bad thing about active's is that sometimes in the situations like playing shows and stuff, they can die out on ya, and you might not even have your battery.........

Yea, any user of EMGs that plays shows will tell you that they spend a pretty penny on batteries

Bah, the batteries last ages, they do for me anyway, my 81-7 has only needed changing once in 4 months.

I've heard they last around a year if you disconnect your cables after use.

ALWAYS unplug your guitars when not in use. i can go a couple months before i change batteries. even then, it's not because the battery is "dead" it's because it just doesnt sound as good as a fresh one. just like an fx pedal, they perform their best with a full battery or powersupply.
in my bandroom sometimes my friends would play my shit and leave it plugged in, just because they didn't know better, or kept forgetting. it got to the point i had to change the battery like twice in 3 weeks. so i made a sign above my amp. "UNPLUG THE FUCKING GUITAR SHITNUTS YOURE WAISTING MY BATTERIES!!!Q"

I'd rather spend money on a guitar with shitty pickups in it than be paying for the $200 EMG's that come with the guitar. My Carvin came with stock Carvin pickups, even though the guitar cost $1200, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Having shitty pickups come with a guitar is a great oppertunity for a pickup swap. When you buy a guitar you should just be paying for the guitar, not pickups your going to change anyways. Ibanez does this too, I think that only the artist customs and real high end models have actual pickups. I like this because you can have a guitar that has had more money spent on contruction rather than pickups. This way you can save up and have a great playing guitar that's made well and save up for pickups to make it sound good later.
However, I'm a bit of a nut with pickups compared to you guys, mayby if I liked EMG 81's and 85's I wouldn't be complaining. It's just you see alot of cheap (well, not really cheap but you know) ESP's that come stock with EMG's. Like this one:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7...ase_pid/516662/
It's $599, which seems like a great deal. But take away $200, around the cost of a pair of EMG's, and it's $399 for the cost of the actual guitar. Would you buy a $400 guitar?
Not to single out anyone with this guitar, it probably sounds great and I'd love to own one, but think about it before pulling the trigger on a product like this.

there is more to it than just the pickups in it. the ec-1000 for example, compared to the ec-400 you just posted a link for. they might come with the same pickups. but what about the quality of everything else?
most high end guitars have good pickups already in them... it doesnt have to say emg, duncan, or dimarzio to be a "good" pickup.
personally i wouldnt buy a guitar with shitty pickups just to swap them out.

Yeah, that's what I mean. The EC-400 has it's price largly in the pickups while a more expensive guitar has more money put in the contruction and "feel" of the guitar.
The Carvin pickups aren't really shitty, I just mean by that that their not universally recognized as good like Dimarzio or SD for example.

My other guitarist has one of these, and while it has a pretty good neck on it, the pick-ups are total bull shit. The thin boby does make it pretty light, but it also lends to the sound being pretty thin. I would look at brands like Ibanez, Carvin, or Fernandes if I were you. You'd get a whole lot more guitar for the money.

Alexi Laiho uses HZ H4s and his pinched harmonics ring out like crazy..... and the tone is just as good as any other. you dont need active pickups to wail out. all actives are really for is volume and gain boost. ...... anyways..... i would definatley say to get the axe. the things sick.
