Pink floyd was fuckin awesome, i was just about to start a thread about live 8.
I stayed up all fucking night to see them, and they ended up being on tv at 10:30am, for fuck sake, im running on 2 hours sleep.
I reckon its cool how they got back together just for that. They did well
umm who else was cool... i cant even think, i remember having to watch a LOT of bollocks though.
Did u guys see Muse? You dont get into the biggest gig ever and fucking lipsync, and pretend u play instruments over some synthetic bullshit.

Not a big fan, its interesting they got back together considering they are probably old as fuck, and nearly dead since they used to do alot of acid or something (so i been told)

Your user name has 666 in it, which automatically makes your opinion invalid and useless. Now, I don't expect everyone to like Pink Floyd, but you are a worthless twat if you play guitar and don't have any respect for them. God, I wish FBS would come in here and slap BANNED across your forehead, but this will have to do:

Well this is a metal forum, full of metal heads. Some of which ONLY like metal.
Pink Floyd were fucking heroes of their time (created the most selling record ever), they wrote amazing music with so much meaning behind it.
I mean some of it is a bit hippy i will agree, but it was the 70's/60's, they just had an awesome view of things and a real fuckin talent of putting it into peoples ears.
Pink Floyd is kinda an aquired taste, i used to think it was fuckin gay when i only listened to metal, but when you open your mind to stuff other than heavy, you will see why they are so good.
Its like Jimmy Page, Slash ect, fuckin awesome writers/guitarists but they play music far from metal - they are just legends because they made the scene of what they did.
And it was such a big thing at Live 8 because their last tour was 20 years ago, and in those 20 years they didnt keep in touch or speak to eachother at all really. So for Floyd fans it was a pretty big thing.
I dont really care if people here think pink floyd is shit lol it is a metal forum Im just tryin to explain why I think they are so good.

I don't understand the hype of pink floyd and led zepplin. Recently it seems those bands have been resurected for income. Along with ac/dc.

Pink Floyd doesn't really synch up with a metal-centered musical outlook. I wouldn't be surprised if the people who can't see beyond their genre borders don't like them. Which isn't actually a criticism; either you like that kind of songwriting or you don't. None of the explanations in this thread do a decent job of it, though, so I'd just recommend giving it a serious listen if you're actually interested.

Yet again, you cry because someone disagrees with you. I have an idea... shut the fuck up. All he said was that he's not a big fan, and he doesn't see why so many people like them. Nothing more. I play guitar, and i hate Pink Floyd. Sure, i can see the talent, and i can understand that they are good musicians, but i cant stand their music. Does this automatically negate my existance? Am i nothing because i dont like Pink Floyd? Get your balls out of your sister's mouth and stop being such a cunt.

Fuck you!
Here the live8 thing is being shown in about an hour
on TV so I'm gonna wait to see them.
I remember when I got "Dark Side Of The Moon",
I hadn't listened to any songs and I was expecting
to hear just another old band, but when I listened to it,
it became one of my favorite albums.

The Wall album is good, especially after seeing the movie because the cd has a storyline to it which is kinda cool.
Wasnt Dark Side of the Moon the most selling record ever?

I play guitar and I don't think taht shoudl autopmaticly make me like Pink Floyd. I can enjoy some of their stuff sometimes, but it sure as fuck isnt because of the awesome technical prowess of the guitar playing. Fuck, I mean Jimmy Paige and Slash, and Paul Gilbert (I think thats the guitarist's name from PF), nigger please. They have been out beat technically 100 times over. Call them the greatest song writer of all time if you like, that is just based on personal tastes, but don't give me bullshit about how tehy were teh best and since I play guitar I should worship them, suck my balls.
I listen to more than metal but if I'm going to go outside of metal for great guitarists I'll look into Jazz and Classical.

I didnt see anyone write that.
And your right, they are out-of-date so to speak with the speed and newer techniques of guitaring (they're an old band). But thats just their style, its kinda blues, slow bends ect.
I dont like it ALL the time either, its good to relax to, or to throw on a cd every now and again.
I can see why people dont like them, especially here (i didnt always) But its all opinion, so no-body is telling you that you are a heathen if you dont like Pink Floyd

If you're gonna go off on some OTT rant and mention sucking balls etc, puuuuurrrrlllllllleeeaaasssse do your research and at least get the guitarist's name right!!!! It's the decent thing to do!
Dave Gilmour is the chap you are slagging!
Interesting stat for the nerdy types......it is estimated that 1 in 3 house holds own a copy of 'Dark Side of The Moon'

Money
Wish You Were Here
Comfortably Numb
Damn, they're old.I didn't expect them to be so old, they all
got white hair
About Syd Barret, when he was in the band the songs
were more rock and not so blues?

When Syd was in the band it was more in the LSD era late 60's. So the stuff was more trippy acid rock I guess. Dave was brought in as a 2nd guitarist because Syd was becoming a bit 'unstable' due to his acid ingestion. There is one story of him playing one note continuously through out a whole gig!! This eventually resulted in him being sacked. Syd went to live on his mum's farm and I think he was treated for schizophrenia or similar symptoms(brought on by his drug use no doubt). He did some solo stuff but the rest of Floyd didn't see him again till the mid 70's, where after meeting him again they wrote 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' about him.

Wow thats really interesting, i always figured Dave was there from the start. Yeah their earlier stuff, they are real into trippy space-ship sounds and all that, I have a video of them playing 'Echoes' live in pompeii, musta been a loooong time ago coz they all look at most 20-25, but Dave was in the band then.

A Saucerful of Secrets (I think Syd's on that) and The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (which includes the song Astronomy Domine which Voi Vod did a cover of)
There's a good place to start unless anyone else can recommend any Syd era stuff?

No, because you presented your view with reasoning.

I love playing along to Pink Floyd. I cant do most of Gilmores haunting melodys but often jam some distorted rythym along with most of their tunes.

I wasn't even aware that this was hapenning, as I hardly watch MTV.
The first time I heard about this was on Adult Swim when they scorned MTV for cutting off Pink Floyd in the middle of their set to show their lame ass VJs. Said something about how maybe we should call them the Music Comes Second Or Not At All Television. MCSONAATV or something like that was the acronym that they used.
Anyway, does anyone know where I might be able to download this thing? I'd really like to see it.
I agree that Pink Floyd is an acquired taste. So is Zep. I can't listen to it all the time, but when I do, I really enjoy it. This stuff was written in the 70s about the 70s for the 70s, that's why it's a bit hard to swallow at times these days.
I'ts a taste acquired with time and with age. I don't know of too many 15 year olds who can truly appreciate Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin's music. You just have to let time take its course and go through the different stages of music tastes before you can get into that kind of stuff. At least that's the way that it was with me.
