please listen to this and help me (mp3 linked)
http://yellow.impunity.co.kr/~shelter/lostto.mp3
here's the mp3 file. my version of dark tranquillity's lost to apathy
i'm a 17 year old girl and i'm new to this...
i know i'm not good and i'm hoping for good tips.
i live in korea so it's hard to get help...
especially on the part where it's sort of a 'whisper' .. ".. look at the shell that is you... empty fragile weak... " god i really sound awful on this part.
and i don't know anything about recording (i used vocal cut and a cheap mic) so please ignore the crappy sound...

Not a bad voice at all. Pretty cool. But sounds like you need a little help with vowels...like Oooos instead of Ahhhs.....like that. Not much though....

Damn ... if you don't like extreme metal, why the hell are you even here
I don't mean to sound hostile, but accusations of "neanderthal" have been hoisted onto my favourite musics ...
You can scream/growl, anyone can do it, but can you sound like Phil Anselmo, Steve Tucker or Jens Kidman? Just as you can talk at different pitches ... but you're not going to sound like a professional vocalist. The only difference : With singing vocalists, the instrument ( voice ) is being used to convey melody. With modern extreme metal vocalists, the voice is being used to convey rythm. One conveys the chiming of a bird, the other conveys the clap of a thunderstorm ... It becomes a percussive instrument.

youre pretty damn good especialy for a girl if you lived around here ide take you as my singer in a heartbeat heh some advice, if youre looking for a band you should (im not sure if you can already or not so bear with me) learn to sing. the most desirable vocalists are those who can get heavy and soft.

Did you play the guitar parts and the drum parts as well?? It doesn't sound like it, cuz it sounds like the original song. Did you use vocal cut to cut out the lead vocals so you can add your voice?? What mic did you use? Did ya use a SM-58 or something and connect to a mic preamp? Your voice echoed at the end so your using some effects as well. Your voice is good.

this one also... (mp3 linked)
http://yellow.impunity.co.kr/~shelter/eyeless.mp3
hey i'm the same girl from below
here's slipknot's eyeless that i sang. (no.. 'blabbered out' to be exact )
apart from my weak voice, GOD i'm having such a hard time inhaling...
how can you inhale so fast?
you can hear that i keep on getting off beat and sound pathetic (and of course, run out of breath as well).
i think slipknot songs are harder just to sing than melodic death.

I'm going to be straightforward and honest, I'm assuming that's the sort of opinion you are looking for anyway :
The screams are quite full, but your spoken voice just does'nt do it for me. A word about Corey Taylor though : Emulating his vocal stylings may not be the wisest ... as he's totally blown his voice out now. All in all, considering you were having an off day ( we're musicians, we all have them ), you did a good job. You certainly do have a future in this, so keep practicing.
And as a future reference, when you are giving us your vocal tracks, anything considered "nu-metal" is not going to be very well received : I think there's about two members here that like Slipknot. The rest hate Slipknot, basically. As Transient said, the fact that we don't like Slipknot, alone, is probably going to have an effect on our opinion. Any of the bands you see listed in the tablatures section are considered fair game, however, and will be most conducive to objective opinions.

See that you become a fairly active member in the other forums here : I promise you'll learn a lot about metal in general. Ever since I logged an account here, I really have gained a completely different outlook on music, and my influences comes from a much broader spectrum now.

I used vocal cut with a program called cool edit pro. you put the original song file in, click vocal cut... zap! but... it kills the drums and bass also, and doesn't sound very nice.

Who cares. I think she can sing very good I don't like much Black metal and I really can't stand Slipknot, but I think she did a better job then Corey.

It sure is great to hear someone that good. You should try a little (or little more) distortion on your vox it sounds pretty cool. Keep it up i wish I was as good as you.

"The Iron Hands of Ishtar" represents a landmark for me, as there is'nt a lot of effects on the vocals ... If you've heard anything I've done before, you know that I slather it in just about anything I can. There's just a bit of chorus, a slight distortion and some echo.

woah-ho. too cool i loved it i can't believe those songs are by one person only
thanks for the comment but i don't really get what you mean by 'down in the mix'
does it mean that the voice and music don't blend and i should use some effects?
kind sir, tell me more i always appreciate your tips

As in volume levels ... The voice is great, just turn it down some so it blends in better.

Goddamn lazyrage, that was amazing.
From the way you were putting yourself down a little...I just didn't expect that haha.
You're better than a large majority of vocalists I've heard.

to bose: dude you suck. why are you making fun of a girl that can probebly kick your ass at vocals?

IhateCoF - You linked to your own computer file. You need to upload the file to webspace for us to be able to download it.
Lazyrage, the first file you posted was great. I didn't listen to the Slipknot one, as I can't say I am fond of them at all. 'sweet.mp3' was not as good as the first, and there were a few mistakes of not grinding enough and hitting the pitch/distortion of your voice.
Freak - that was good as well.
I'm an aspiring black metal vocalist, but I'm not doing very well at the moment and have alot of practise ahead of me. Eventually I hope to post some stuff here in the future..
