The DSL is the more Classic sounding out of the new JCM series. Its not high gain so chances youre gonna have to overdrive the tubes with a distortion pedal on top of the amps overdrive.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! WRONG...
the dsl, is a jcm 2000.. the jcm 2000's are the newer modern high gain marshalls. the dsl, and the tsl, basically the same, but the tsl has alot more options.
if you want a classic jcm sound, buy a jcm 800, 600, or 900.

I'm not a fan, but a while ago I was reading the musicians' board on their forum and in almost every amp thread someone mentioned one of the using a DSL 100. There were also various quotes of him in which he stated being very content with the amp (along with his "Boss orange pedal").

And to answer the original poster, JCM2000's, while not being able to go "over the top" on their own, are definitely high-gain.

according to karl sanders they use jcm 2000s, he posted his whole setup on the nile forum, although i have the feeling he left something out, because their tone is too brutal straight in a jcm 2000 is would seem

I think they use RAT's to kick their amps in the arse.

they may use 2000's now, but i'm almost positive they used to use 900's.
and i'm even more certain of the use of RAT's. i mean, you can hear that nasty RAT sound.

i know plenty of metal bands that get great brutal high gain sounds from plain jcm 2000's. the bro from ion dissonance sports a tsl60 and i think he has such a cool brutal sound.

trey azagthoth uses em
I have a tsl 100 love it. it may not be the best amp out there but its damn good imo. the dsl is all right but it does have more of the older classical rock soun by itself which is why I went for the tsl becaus it has that channel plus a 'lead' which is better for heavier metal

no, the dsl has the same tonal range as the tsl. it can get just as heavy. the main difference between the two is the tsl has 3 channels, each with their own eq's... while the dsl has only 2 channels with their own eq's, but each channel has two different "modes".
so look at it like. 3 channels over three eq's or 4 channels over 2 eq's. same power, same tonal range... different controls.

I have a dsl401 combo and need an od pedal to drive the distortion channel some so would you guys reccommend a boss sd1 or od3 more. I also need the bass tightened up a little (combos arent closed back).

if you don't dig the dsl, ditch it. but give the GT-2 a shot i guess... it's amazing what a generally cheap boost pedal can do for a $1,000 + head.
but shit. i think a framus cobra is totally worth a looky too.

I thought the tone on the DSL compared to the TSL
in my opionin the DSL Was plain better . I A/B ed both ,I liked the DSL better , as far as gain , I feel it has enough , occasionally I hot rod it with a zakk overdrive ,
There are other amps depends on what your looking for , My Koch is a better sounding amp but its expensive as hell so Ill use the DSL which sounds pretty dam good as far as it goes

no, they use distortion on some roland processer which helps boost the marshall, Karl said it sounded similar to the DS 1

And Then There Were None This band uses a DSL100. He has a Mercury Magnetic output transformer in his now, but these recordings were done when it was stock.

I dont know why so many cats in here knock the DSL .Its a good sounding amp , can be as brewtal as you want it. Its a simple amp to dial in a good tone. the one drawback and its not really a drawback is you have the crank it up , it sounds like balls at lower volumes. Its def not a bedroom amp , You shouldnt buy a half stack for a bedroom anyway.

i really like the marshall dsl heads, very sweet tone, i much prefer them to the tsls, as they dont have as much of a trebly bite to them.

why does every1 talk about using a boost with the dsl, its totally unneccesary, it has enough gain on its own

great tone, plenty of gain, but even with a boost i like the sound as more of a classic kind of sound. I just wouldnt use it for metal.
