As much of a big Opeth fan as I am, I'm not sure about this new song. Its mainly the fact that the quality (i understand its a shitty rip) isn't good enough to really distinguish much of anything. It doesn't sound bad, but I'm gonna stay neutral until a better version comes out.

It sounds very little like Opeth. Actually it sounds like Opeth trying hard not to be Opeth. Which is stupid, because that's what they're good at. They're not good at busting out recycled Dream Theatre riffs, but I guess that's what they chose to focus on this time out. I'll give it a chance with a better recording, but really, I don't see why they'd try to do something other bands do better when they're the best band in the world at doing what they do. Growth and change is fine, but only when it's actually healthy growth. Some growths are just tumors.

I expect everyone to love it, though, because Mikael touched it.

And if anyone with a brain who follows opeth recalls, Mikael even said that the new album was solely an experiment. So whatever changes they have made in their music on this album, it will probably convert back to the Opeth we know and love afterwards. No, no, no. By all means, criticize the new song. But I just can't stand it when people say that Opeth is gay/boring/faggoty/etc. If they have a good reason for why they believe so, fine. But the new song is an experiment. And if its bad, expect me to shat on it as well.

Who bashed Opeth? They experimented and it failed so far as I can tell from this song. Only a shameless fanboy believes any criticism of his favorite band's unmerited 'bashing.' Sometimes our favorite bands suck. And the fact that it's strictly an experiment doesn't actually mitigate it, fanboy.

You can make out most of the basic song, but the second guitar's getting lost a lot. I can hear it a little bit, but I'd like to hear it more. I don't think it'll save the song, but I might as well let it have a chance, even being as xXxHRDCRExXx as I am. I like Opeth, but not tired riffs off Metropolis Part: II in a less progressive song.

I didnt like their style (of metal songs) in 'Deliverance', it seemed to me that they were trying too hard to 'deliver' their death metal side, whereas in their earlier cds their songs just flow through riffs, solos, and acoustic breaks. Damnation is a good cd. And not ALL of deliverance is bad, its just some parts they sound like any metal band, and not like Opeth.
I was hoping they would go back to their style before damnation/deliverance for their new cd - but since its an experiment ill just have to see what its like with an open mind.

EDIT: I downloaded some of that song - The first riff is kinda cool, until its played 30 times. Its got too much background shit going on (keyboards, mellotrons whatever else) sounds like fucking cradle of filth or something. And i dont like that singing style, or effect.

Always give it a full listen. You can't judge the whole by one part, or by other people's opinions, unless you just don't give a shit. Based on your name I assume you do, so give it a real chance. If it sucks, you only wasted ten minutes of your life.

But it doesn't really suck. There's nothing wrong with it. There's just nothing right with it either, and I don't have the time to listen to every album that hits that middle range.

Octavarium? People are only saying it sucks because of the lack of wankery. They focus more on songwriting, and a good album is the result. People are always going to have a problem with new albums by a PROGRESSIVE metal band.

i rather enjoyed the song, the riffs are repetitive, but i liked the mood it evoked, and i loved the intro, though it doesnt sound like opeth very much. it is subpar compared to BWP, though.

I find it funny that people are saying that the new album is a failure after hearing one song, which apparently has had the first minute cut off anyway.

I think BWP is subpar

I didnt like it at first. I listened to it like 10 times and it is starting to grow on me. Like many others have said, I will have to wait till the entire album comes out and it is completely mastered to see wheter or not is "Opeth" godliness.
