I just play it a lot. With the occasional riff here and there, if I start playing in the middle of it, I can't remember it properly, so I have to play the enitre riff.

Before I bother to learn a song I usually have listened to it a lot before. If you do that, you'll probably never forget how the song goes. Coming up with new stuff/learning new songs that you haven't listened to very much is harder, will take you longer to learn.
It took me so long to learn and memorize "Into Infinite Obscurity" by Dissection, mainly because after listening to it only 6 times I fell in love with it and immeadeately had to go learn it. Hence it took me over a month to master it.

interesting topic. i dont know how it happens, but i have a library of riffs. half of them it would be very hard for me to tab, i just know how to play it! its even worse with writing riffs. i have a ton of riffs that it would take me a very long time to tab out because i dont know what im doing it just happens

I'm the same, I also always find that i associate riffs with noises in my head like "jigga jigga jar-jar!"

I use my brain, which helps me remember things.

If I know how to play the riff, whether it be from tab or whatever, it's just a matter of keeping it fresh in my memory, playing it every once in awhile to keep remembering it. As soon as I quit playing it, chances are.. I forgot. As for my own stuff, I tab it out on paper, then go and record it on my comp

I try to play them without looking at the tab a bunch of times, which works if you do it 2 or 3 times.
While on subject I would like to say that I think solos are impossible to learn. My hands can move fast enough but I have never had the patience to do something like that. But then again I might be able to now..

I learn it over and over again until it sticks, as soon as i can play it without the help of looking at the tab, its remembered and i just practise it off my head.
As for solos, easiest way is to learn them in segments, learn each different part of it off by heart then put it all to gether.

I repeat it at low speed until I get the 'feel' of the riff - when you just know how to move your fingers for the riff rather than actually thinking about fret numbers. I'm not sure if I'm making sense...
