DEATH Sound
I am getting a Marshall 8100 (same one DEATH used). What EQ settings give you the closest sound to DEATH? Thanks

What BLS said ... all we can tell you is to have the highest gain channel engaged, and turning your mids to 0 is a mistake.

the EQ on this amp is as close to non-responsive as you can get. It has a very set sound, the EQ just fine tunes it. It shouldnt be hard to find the sound you're looking for.

Get an graphic equalizer like say and a Boss GE-7 and put it in front of the amp, or in your loop (not sure if it has one) Get an overdrive pedal like a tubescreamer, make sure there's a X2N as your bridge pickup.
You may or may not nail Chuck's tone, but you can get pretty amesome anyway I bet

Also, if you check out emptywords.org, you can read some of the interviews with chuck about his sound and equipment.
Once he switched to the 8100, he stopped using his ds-1 so you don't have to worry about any pedals or eq's. Also, he didn't use all of the gain the amp had to offer. His X2N's drove his amp hard enough that he didn't need to dime the gain.

Yeah. If you want to nail Chucks tone, go for the X2N, but an EMG81, or any other hot pickup will do well, as long as it not the invader.

i think the invader is plenty hot enough... maybe not as hot and clear as an x2n. but it's still pretty hot.

well, compared to an xzn, they arent as tight or crisp... more of a boomy sound. but i don't think they're THAT muddy.
it's like comparing a 5150 to a recto... sure the recto has alot more flub in it. but it can be worked around.

Yeah, the guitar I have with the invader in it has a mahogany body though... Mudfest all around.

I read in an interview that was linked to the Official Death website that Chuck kept it very simple, he used his Valvestate heads and his guitar, with abit of light chorus on his leads.
But in another review i read he used some sort of Marshall head (could be a Vavlestate or an 800) and, on top of the amps overdrive, used a Proco Rat

i used to have a 8100, there very defined and very very loud for an ss head. The eq is fairly responisve so u wont need an eq pedal. As for the distortion u'll need to select the OD2 channel, also set the mids pretty high if u want chucks tone (around 6/7+), u have no need for a overdrive pedal if u have a high gain bridge pup but if u dont u ll prob need a rat or maxon. The clean channel lacks alot but it sounds good when some delay and chorus is added. Hope that helps

I had an 8100 for several months. I could never find a sound I was happy with, so I got rid of it and purchased a JCM 900 SLX (and about a million other heads after that)

i already said it, heres your answer. Turn the god damned amp on and you will have a Death sound. The EQ on this thing is non-responsive, the amp has a very set tone. Go ahead, turn the bass all the way down... you'll barely be able to tell you moved it.
Good thing? Fuck no. Convenient if you like the tone? Yep.
