the inevitable "suggest some good bands" thread...
yep, this was bound to happen the second I clicked the 'register' button. but just because I'm new to these forums don't assume I'm stupid or suggestible. I've been into metal long enough to know what I like, I'm just after more of the same, so tell me bands you think I'll like, not bands you want me to like.
bands I like currently: Children Of Bodom; Kalmah; Imperanon; Enter My Silence; Warmen; Norther; Skyfire; Anorexia Nervosa; Bullet For My Valentine; Thrice; InMe; Amorphis; Catamenia; Wintersun; In Flames; Kylähullut; Dimmu Borgir; Atreyu; Trivium.
that about covers my entire musical tastes, but there's a couple more things:
I will not listen to anything harder than Anorexia Nervosa, and likewise anything softer than Thrice is out of the question. melody is a must, and up to about Warmen level the more the better. I like my vocals black and my drums quick but nothing ridiculous. there's a reason that list didn't include The Black Dahlia Murder.
with any luck a couple of you will actually care enough to read half of that...

Listen to Morbid Angel's "Blessed are the sick". You will soon forget about those other bands and get on the path to enlightenment.

Dude...not cool.
I refuse to say anything to any more newbs about bashing members past the newb status. There should be some rule in a sticky for people too stupid to except it as an unwritten way of an internet community.
And you can't expect anything too nice coming a thread like this. I did, in fact, read your post. You seem quite sure in what you want, yet have forgotten that most of us will not give a damn. I, presonally, I can't think of any suggestions for you.
Anyway, you seem like an intelligent and well-rounded internet companion. I just hope you don't fuck everything up by insulting and/or getting heated at members past newb status. Because that is a big no-no.

actually, I am aware of this unwritten law, and I tend to do my utmost not to flame/bash/annoy anyone whose opinion might differ from my own. however, when somebody comes to a thread I posted, presumably reads at least part of the first post but then screws it all up by posting the exact type of thing I have specifically advised against I feel I have the right to at least complain, whether I'm new or not.

No, he was right - he just chose the wrong album.
Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten
I don't care what a person's specifications for music are or how immovable a person's horizons may be, this album should be heard at least once by anybody who is serious about extreme metal.

Well, here's a heavy band that you may like: Capharnaum. They're a tech death band who feature the vocal talents of Matt Heafy of Trivium, one of the bands that you listed as liking. No clean vocals, but the solos are better than Trivium's (due to Daniel Mongrain) and the riffs are more memorable (due to Jason Suecof) and surprisingly melodic given the technicality.
This also links nicely into another suggestion: Martyr. Martyr number amongst their ranks the aforementioned Daniel Mongrain and are classed as a tech death band but for me they lean more towards tech thrash due to the omission of blast beats.
I reckon both of the above bands will hold you attention for a lot longer than Trivium.

Are you from the UK by any chance? BFMV and InMe are bands that I wouldn't expect a non-UK resident to know much about.
Some more suggestions:
Depending on which era-In Flames you like you might want to check out bands like At The Gates and Dark Tranquility. You probably already know about ATG though.
If you like Dimmu then I strongly advise you check out Emperor - they're one of the few, in fact the only black metal band that I can stomach. I love In The Nightside Eclipse by them but their later stuff is pretty good too.
Have you heard of a band called Akercocke? Awesome blackened death - I strongly advise checking them out even if you only have a passing interest in black/death metal. Chronozon is one of the best albums from the past five years if you ask me. The drummings pretty fast, but even if you're not that big on overly fast drumming there's still plenty to take from this album. Besides it's not like it's 100mph all the way through (actually it's a very varied album in both textures and dynamics). Chronozon is an experience that I would highly recommend.

what I could find of Capharnaum is very good. the feel is slightly AN, I like it. as for Martyr, a bit heavier than I would have liked but still good. thanks.

No problem. I can't really help you with stuff like Norther, Kalmah, Wintersun et al but there are a few people here who could probably offer some decent suggestions when they get online.

yes I am in the UK, mystery solved, lol. I know ATG and DT, but never really got into them much. every now and then I still pick up an odd new song or two but their styles just aren't as charismatic as I'd like. since you asked my favorite In Flames is the old stuff, right back to the Jester Race. I will check out Akercocke now too.

I'd recommend songs like Leviathan, Son Of The Morning, Enraptured By Evil and Praise The Name Of Satan.

nice stuff *nod*, although as you said I'll probably have to wait for someone who's more into my kind of metal to find something to really hit that melodic spot.

then I guess I'll just have to settle for fucking men.
look, I'm sorry if you think it's wrong that I can't listen to music that I genuinely think is shit, I really am. please be aware, I'm in no way making a personal attack based on your musical tastes, I'm just asking that you return the favor. if you insist on hurling abuse at me because I like different metal to you please at least do it in a pm instead of spamming my topic.

hey, I'm not saying that the abuse hurling had already happenned, but like I said in the first post I'm not stupid either, and I know exactly where replies like that lead.

Hey man, you're the dumbass that asked for band suggestions and then compiled a list of metalcore and third rate wannabe death metal. If you're honestly looking for good music, then you should take my advice. If you're looking for more crap then suit yourself.

I've taken this long enough. it's not crap. especially when you compare it to the bands you listen to. the reason I like the bands I do is because they are great musicians and lyricists and have an inherent natrual musical gift which cannot be faked, and due to this such music will always reside on a higher plane of skill, showmanship and meaning than the practise of attempting to destroy guitars and drums which you so misinformedly refer to as "good music". I can match the aryanism of any member of these forums yet up to this point I have chosen not to, out of the apparently misplaced belief that simply expressing no prejudice towards heavier sound might grant me some protection from pointless insults to my intelligence. I cannot escape being enraged by the arrogant and hypocritical way its members preach their own musical tastes as if it were the law of god and shun those who fail to conform exactly. never for a second think that these walls of noise you call songs can compare to even the lowliest examples of pop and rap. I'd rather listen to Dido.
now either have this thread locked, say something constructive or shut the fuck up and leave my topic alone.

This was all in good jest, but since you're going to take it so seriously then I have to point out that you are in fact the one who is being arrogant and hypocritical. Having already gone through the juvenile musical phase you are currently mired in 17 years ago where everything technical and precise sounded awesome to my brain, I can tell you that it is natural for you to eventually become bored with it and begin to hate the very bands that you love now because you gradually find them to be cheesy and over the top crap which is not pleasant to listen to in any social situation and is not motivational in any way, shape, or form other than being something to crack up about saying "God damn, I can't believe I ever liked these faggots. Now all I can do is point out their many flaws as musicians because all they cared about was blinding speed or screeching vocals or whatever and the fact is that in the grand scheme of things compared to bands like Pink Floyd and Napalm Death they are simply gay and that's all there is to say about that..."
I am not being arrogant or hypocritical, I am simply telling you a simple fact of life and in the future you can do one of two things:
1. Discover my words to be true if you walk along the path of enlightenment.
2. Stop looking for new types of music which are farther evolved than the crap you listen to now and eventually become like all the modern day burnouts who still think Motley Crue and Cinderella are teH SHZniTTTT!!!! and go to see cheesy nostalgia shit all the time and complain about how there is no more good music these days when all the while it was right there just outside of the mainstream and just outside of your ability to grasp that you have to look real fucking hard and go through a whole lot of mental evolutions before you will be qualified to say that you know what is good and what is bad. You didn't figure out that you have to go through extended listening phases in all styles of music before you can properly judge which ones are superior.

epliptica, id say read online interviews with those bands you like, see what they say they listen too or have been influenced by, then search for it, i do it all the time
you might even find a suffocation or morbid angel reference there, if not many

ok, i will reccomend(sp?):
finntroll - blackish viking/folk metal, they use polka beats in their music, and they make me want to dance, i love this band
himsa - i think they are a great band, similar to atreyu and trivium, musically, but they have more of a hardcore influence.
insomnium - melodic, not too fast, awesome melodic death metal
old man's child - killer symphonic black metal, fast, heavy, great lead work, and amazing use of acoustics on the new album
and
Opeth - i highly doubt this band will be a new name to you, but if they are, for your tastes, i would suggest checking out orchid, morningrise, or my arms, your hearse, as these albums have more of a melodic death metal touch to them, and the vocals lean more towards black metal, as does the production on the first two albums.

well, he asked for something very specific, and people gave him answers that were obviously outside of what he was asking for, suffocation is brutal death metal, not very melodic, heavy as fuck, not what he was asking for, so i can uderstand why he's upset, and given his list of bands that he gave for reference, he knows what sound he is looking for.
its like ordering a steak and getting a PB&J sandwich
atleast thats how i see whats going on

Considering most of the stuff you listen to isn't really metal, you shouldn't ask for recommendations. However, I do suggest you check out some melo-death / metalcore:
As I Lay Dying
Cepharnaum
Darkest Hour
Gardenian
Shadows Fall are fairly good despite not being very metalcore-ish
Unearth
Also some more death metallish but still melodic:
Amon Amarth
Dark Tranquility
Dissection
Hypocrisy

thanks MoonRaven, autumncurve and BlackRoseImmortal, I knew a few of those (for instance I found Enter My Silence through Insomnium, who, although they're nice are a bit too repetitive and simple for my tastes), and the rest are very good, especially Himsa, Old Man's Child and Gardenian. those were really useful contributions and I'm grateful.
as for all the newb-haters, I know it's an irresistable urge but I really did everything possible to avoid asking for it, and in any case it's completely unnecessarry. also if you're all so sure I will eventually 'see the light' then why so viciously oppose the natrual course of that very transition?

considering the list the topic creator posted, all he needs is Insomnium, Mors Principium Est and October Tide, which are much better than the bands he posted (aside from COB, of course).

I don't, the slipknot threads are more fun. Bottom line is the guy makes a request, I give him an honest suggestion and he starts in with "Wut weRe YU Born STooPid????" shit out of the blue so fuck him in the ear for that. Other than that he seems alright...

thanks for the compliment I guess... sorry about that shit too. I was tired and I guess it came out a bit wrong so you took it the wrong way.

IlikeRiffseveryone - you're right, Finntroll is pretty damn cool. folk metal rocks. as for Dragonforce, they're alright but in my book they ammount to an almighty meh. I was tempted to list them but they fall just short of the bar for me for the same reasons that I don't really like Insomnium or Stratovarius that much.
LordofStorms - hehe, I never said it was his fault, so I guess it's your fault for taking that the wrong way, lol (meant in the best of possible humors btw). thanks for the suggestion, Angra are nice, and refreshingly trippy if Carry On is anything to go by. I wonder if you can suggest anything similar?
