Trust me, Flo Mounier needs not to be referred to as "Cryptopsy's Flo". Everyone here knows his name.

Actually, I'd never heard of the bloke (or the band). So I looked him up and found a video of solo and stuff of his. I must be honest and say it didn't do much for me - all he's really doing is playing double strokes which any jazz musician (which I'm most certainly NOT one of) can do in their sleep. The double kick stuff is fast, but so fast it just sounds like a gimmick to me. Sorry.
I haven't heard any of the bands music yet, of course. Maybe I'll see the light when I do, but I don't hear anything in there that Gene Hoglan wasn't doing almost 20 years ago; and certainly nothing as melodic and interesting as Bonham was doing 40 years ago.

Fucking A! Flo is top notch!
Jimmers- Listen to "We Bleed" and then come talk to us. The man is god-like behind a kit.
You can probably get the song off the site or somewhere....

Yeah, funnily enough that was the one song I did download off their site. Death Metal just does nothing for me at all, and that song didn't do much to reverse that.
It's not that I don't appreciate the skill it takes to play at that speed and all that, it's just that I personally don't like it. It's such a narrow, restrictive form of music; every Death Metal band or song I've ever heard sounds the same (apart from the peripherals like Carcass/Arch Enemy etc).
Your man Flo is undoubtedly a very fine drummer, and 40 times better that I'll probably ever be, but those showy ones like Thomas Lang or Jojo Meyer etc could do the same tricks on kits half the size (when they're not busy playing for twats like Robbie Williams).

jimmers, i bet flo could rip some jazz that may give those peeps whos names you just dropped pause, all the technique applied in death metal is the same as that to jazz, doing rudiments, heel toe, pivot roll. its all the same tools used in a completely different context. drum kit size doesnt mean shit, doesnt mean there are more "tricks", its about the range of sounds you want.
what you said about death metal being restrictive is utter bullshit, you can make the generalization about any kind of music, jazz is one hundred times more monotonous than death metal IMO. and any jazz fusion geek would be hard pressed to sit thru a cryptopsy set, endurance alone, nevermind the sheer flurry of skill

Absolutely, yeah - jazz is awful and I'd never argue otherwise.
What you said underlines my point, really.. that some metal drummers apply jazz and other techniques to their own style and because it's slightly out of context it sounds amazing, when really it's "just" (haha, I know) rudiments and standard
licks. I personally applaud anyone that's inclined to innovate and is willing to try something other than re-hashed, run-of-the-mill stuff. I frustrate myself enormously by devoting so much time to mastering double kick techniques when I know I should be working on my snare stuff, for example.
My own feelings on Death Metal are, of course, just my own little opinion and we've all got those. I'm sure there are plenty of things I like that you don't. "Metal" is a broad church and thats what helps it maintain its' credibility while other genres fall into line behind silly cliches and stereotypes, and none of us would have it any other way I'm sure.

Jimmers- That changes everything. If you're not a Death Metal fan to begin with, I understand that you're un-impressed with Flo. You have to Love death metal to truely appreciate the skill, technique, endurance, speed and musiacianship that goes into playing this genre of music. Non-death metalers just can't grasp it, and that will never change. Now I know why you said that. That would be like some dude trying to get me to understand how awsome some chick is on the pan flute when I've never likeed or listened to that kind of music.
I just assumed everyone on this forum was a death Metaller.

you can say that about ANY drumming, in fact ALL drumming is just rudiments, HOWEVER it is the feel you create what you hit with what, when and the speed you are hitting it at. and from the perspective Flo's drummign suddenly becuase more than just rudiments (it gets bloody fucking difficult) but the other people are right, if you don't like death then you will probably not understand the drumming.

Yeah, ban the fucker.
Yet another person who thinks Flo is sloppy, and yet another person who is wrong. You're just getting confused with the loose, free kind of feel the songs have. Cryptopsy play like a fucking robotic unit, on their DVD they're as tight as fuck.

yea, i saw them live... and my god were they tight. Except for Worms vocals. His vocals suck. Mike DiSalvo was better.

Haha. No. Worm is better. Only my opinion counts. DiSalvo was decent though.
