Neoclassical technical bands and scales.
It seems that Malmsteen, Children of Bodom, Dark Moor, Astriaal, and Nightwish (not technical really) use Major and Natural Minor scales for soloing most of the time. Is there any other major scales used in Neoclassical or melodic technical metal music. What are some other really good Neoclassical and melodic technical bands.

I find Necrophagist to be quite melodic. Even if you don't agree, the solos are fantastically well crafted and I guarantee they'll get your neo-classical juices pumping in an instant. Muhammed has a modal approach to soloing and he mainly utilizes the natural minor and harmonic minor scales.

yea his solos are very neo style, all those harmonic minor and major sweeps, and very melodic. I like how it can be brutal DM then go into those awesome solos.

Grave Digger seem to be quite awesome as well. Anyone here like Dark Moor. Very classic medieval solos. Very catchy.

In dark purity era monstrosity is some of the most awesome neo classical stuff you'll ever hear. Also... you guys are going to hate me for this, but Mick Thomson is hectictly into neo classical stuff as well. Cool melodic bands are Arch enemy, In Flames, Dark tranquility..

Necrophagist
Curiosity has finally taken over. I've just downloaded a few Necrophagist songs. Amazing. That guy (Mohammed Suicmed) has vision and no question. I admit the name and gore centred shit kept me away until now.

I just found Ensiferum the band. They kick ass as well! I was so surprised, Petri Lindroos, the lead singer and guitar player in Norther is also a singer and guitar player in Ensiferum! What a coincidence I found this band, since I do like Norther a lot. Viking melodic metal sounds really awesome to.

Petri is only in Norther now because Jari, the mastermind behind the band, left. I'm sure they're gonna go way downhill now.
"Neoclassic" bands:
Mourn in Silence
Would you consider Cynic?
Evergrey
Anything with Petrucci
Nightshade
Mors Principium Est (the album Inhumanity has some awesome shred)
Dragonforce (faaaaast)
Wintersun (feat. Jari from Ensiferum)
Equilibrium
Into Eternity?

Yeah there first disc was gore centered kinda carcass-esque from a lyrical point of view, but Epitaph's lyrics are more philosophical and no gore even though they have the song stabwound. I would suggest you buy epitaph.

I just found this band called Graveworm and I went right away to buy their cd just after listening one song. They are fuking awesome. They are gothic metal like Cradle of Filth but much better. They also have better sounding choirs and creepier instrumental tracks than Cradle of Filth's and Dimmu.

I bought Scourge of Malice, but I'm going to get Engraved in Black and (N) utopia. There music sounds extremely sad but I like Dani Filth's lyrics from Cradle of Filth better though. His best lyrics were in the first album, "Principle of Evil made Fleash".

I bought Yngwie Malmsteen album "Attack". I liked it but it wasn't as technical as I thought it would be. Anyone know the best album of Yngwie Malmsteen. For best I mean lots of catchy neoclassical solos and good singers.

Hah for what you say you're after, I strongly recomend the compilation of "The Best of 90-99" - has some good songs, including a cover of Abba's gimme gimme gimme.... hah.
Yeah Necrophagist are definately worth checking out, there are also a few GP files online for them. We were supposed to see them earlier in March along side Dying Fetus and Nile, butt hey bailed :/
Check out a band called Spastic Ink, a good song (and for learnign) is "to counter and groove in e minor". The guitarist also has a good story and biography you may find interesting.
Leading off topic... Also some other technical/semi-technical guitar orientated bands are Racer X, Symphony X, Quo Vadis...

I found this band that Alex from COB also plays called Sinergy. This band rocks as well since Alex plays the guitar parts. Really technical. I can't believe no one mentioned it yet.

Yea i have, that band does kick a lot of ass. Alexi has some really good guitar in that band since he doesnt have to concentrate on singing, plus the singer for that band is the old keyboardist for dimmu, and Alexi's wife. Sometimes her singing can get annoying.

Didn't they divorce? So Dimmu use to have a female keyboardist, never knew that.

My favorite album is are the first 3, and a lot of the songs I learned of thiers are off hatebreeder, and on a lot of the songs I know when alexi solos he uses harmonic minor. Also Im 99% positive about kalmah, there a good band but are there albums sound very similar, partially because they use the same scale in the same key over and over again. I know a couple kalmah songs also, not the solos, but a lot of there lick/riffs they have are harmonic minor.
