*tear*
Single rec, or Peavey XXX. I'd say a Single rec.
Only get a 5150 if you dont have enough money for a decent amp.

How is a 5150 not a decent amp??
Price means shit.. if the amp sounds good to you buy it.

Imo their crunch is too fuzzy/solidstatey, the gain is real farty and loose.
But if you like the 5150 tone Arvina, don't let me scare you away from it.

JCM 2000's have no character IMO, I definetly prefer the 800 and 900's.
That dosen't mean they're bad amps though..

thats good because most of the 900s come with 2x12 cabinets and some even 4 x12! the one with 2x12 is like <700! that i should get.

Yeah, what BLS said, 800 and 900 are both just better amps than 2000's. They are similar though.
I think the 800 has more gain than the 900 if I'm not mistaken.
I have never played the Satriani head, what does it compare to?

900 has more gain, and two channels were as most 800's are one channel.
The JSX is a hot rodded XXX, seems a bit smoother, less buzzy.

If you like the XXX check out the Peavey Ultra Plus.. its the predecessor to the XXX and many prefer it over the XXX, plus they can be had for around $300.. and they have a cool color changing Peavey logo on the front!

Hmmm my ears decieve me, I thought the 900 was less gain, a little drier. Maybe the tubes one the ones I tried were crappy

normally they have jj el34's or sovtek kt88's but for $100 extra, you can get jj kt88's. and of course xdx's gotta sport the jj kt88's.
anyways, i'm sure i'm going to have a thread on it soon. so we can just get back to the origional topic. as i didn't mean to steal this thread.

hey thats what im doin...
anyone ever played the thd univalve?
its got a built in hot plate adn the best autobias around.
ill play one whenever i get home but untill then tell me what you think. sound samples sound van halenish. hot plates are pretty awsome...
EDIT: oh and what are your thoughts on the legacy also
DOUBLE-EDIT: screw the legacy, the carvin mts 3200. the main ones im lookin at are the thd, jsx and xxx. that carvin seems good and it is cheaper but also seems very generic.

and since noone has said anything else the genz-benz eldialbo 60. im likeing this one more because of the lower wattage( what am i gonna do with 120 watts?) the multitude of tonal controls.i can only afford a 1x12 combo.
which i guess is ok if i have pa. but at practise we dont have a pa and the room really sux so i need to be heard over a drummer. how much would 4 replacement speakers cost.
i realize theres nothin yall can say to help me choose. just gotta get out there and play em. but im sure all of those amps sound great in one aspect or another. how do i choose?

whatever sounds best TO YOU.... that's how you choose.
personally i find the el diablo only has one sound. a good high gain super compressed grind. that's what it's designed for. if that's the sound you like, go for it.
i think it's funny though. having had a talk with derek at rocksolidamps.com, the reason he doesnt carry the el diablo's is that he said he feels they're not up to par with the other amps he sells, yet the g flex cabs are, same with isp amps, he only carries the decimators but the amps don't cut it...
but with engl, framus and splawn... his amp standards are VERY high.

yeh... it was a GAS attack, i spent money i was saving for more college classes. now i just need to sell the voodoo to help pay myself back.
after a while, you get a certain amount of money invested towards your rig. buy sell and trade shit. meanwhile saving some money on the side.. half a century later, you end up a gear nazi like me. selling your future away for better tone.

the thd... you'll need a boost pedal, it's more of a pushed clean/crunch sounding amp. does the jtm 45 meets ac30 sound really well. the built in hotplate is nice and the build quality is retardedly good.
a maxon 808 or a proco rat would turn it into a monster.

alot of watts? it's only 120w.
it's okay, these amps are ment mostly for preamp distortion, so that you don't have to run them as hard to get grit. sometimes alot of volume and headroom is a good thing to have.
it's like a condom. better to have and not need, than to need and not have.

xdx are you sure with this? Almost all modelling amps, including the sansamps, usually sound better thru SS stuff due too that they have already muddied up the sound a little (to modell that tube sound, as even the tube poweramp and cab is modelled)

if you want a sterile hi fi sound...
most audible tonal coloration from tubes happens in the poweramp section. if you want some warmth to counter act the ice cold pod.
the pod + mesa 2:90 is a pretty popular combination.
but don't totally rule out s.s. my cs 800 kicked mucho ass with my jmp-1.
i had a sansamp psa-1.. sounded really bright, with s.s. rigs. but with a buddy's mesa 50/50, it was alot rounder. just to chimey at high volumes.

All it does is take the EQed small signal from the preamp, makes it a big signal, and pushes that signal to the speakers.

a pod xt + poweramp is basically the same thing as a head...
the pod shapes and creates the tones, the poweramp simply takes those sounds and amplifies them.*makes loud*

the poweramplifier is the amplifier... the preamplifier is something that is put before the amplifer to shape the signal from the guitar before it get's amplified, that is why the EQ is set before the amplifier, to shape the tone that is about to get amplified
a pod xt isn't an amplifier, it could be used as a preamplifier, so a poweramp will amplify the signal from the pod xt
edit: the podxt is modelling the entire preamp, poweramp and cab (and mic'ing a cab I think?) of the amp simulation that you choose in it, so you can play it thru your Hi-Fi (a Hi-Fi needs a poweramp aswell, but they are usually solidstate poweramps for not coloring the tone from a CD for example) or record direct into your soundcard without a poweramp.. I think the clip you showed us in the other "guess the gear" thread was made without a poweramp, pod xt direct into the soundcard
edit2: if you still haven't understood... to get sound out of a speaker.. you need a strong signal given too it so that the speaker can let the signal out, and the signal from a guitar or a preamp ain't strong enough to drive a speaker, so the signal must get amplified before you can hear something.. even headphone speakers needs a poweramp, so actually the pod xt has got a very tiny poweramp, probobly 2x1,5 watts to drive the headphones..
lol I feel like I've written too much unnecesery (can't spell that damn word) stuff right now but I'm pretty sure you understood the whole thing now.. If there's something still unclear for you, I'll kill myself

I concur, I used one of those for about half a year, it has 8 el84's and a load of preamp tubes, it's really not bad for the cash they go for (in the US I guess they go for about 300?) I bought and sold mine for 400, but they're not as regular over here as in the US, that goes for all Peavey products though!

anyone ever played a gibson super goldtone?
what do yall think is a good price for a peavey xxx. i dont wanna pay too much. how about this deal. im pretty sure ill do this if not the xxx.
peavey ultra 120 with carvin 4x12 (vin 30s) for 400? that seems like a damn good deal! i can sacrifice the eq and if i want it modded i can get it modded for el34s.

gibson amps rock... but for metal, meh, you'll need some kinda of boost pedal and shit for sure..
i wouldnt pay much over $600 for a XXX.
are you sure that carvin cab is loaded with vintage 30's? is so, that + a peavey ultra would be a great deal.

ok i finally got a hold of that guy. he said he traded it for a ampeg vh 100r blah blah w/e. he also sais he regrets it. dammit! thats such a good deal!
at avatar speakers they're practically giving away speakers. go and check it out and tell me if any of the 12s are good. i dont know shit about speakers exept what i hear on here. please?
600 has to be the max i can spend on a head. just cuz its heavy shippings gonna be bitch, then i have to buy a 4x12(i guess i dont have to, orignaly it was gonna be a 2x12 but i figured, y not?), shippings gonna be harsh on that too. is 777 a good deal for a xxx half stack? what speakers are in that cab?
