I'm learning/practicing nothing but Arabian/Eastern/ethnic scales right now.
Writing a riff in an Arabian scale sounds interesting.

Messing with the harmonic minor, I've pulled some sweet Arabic/Turkish sounds. I've also put some classical taste from the minor scales into some of my metal. Some even has a russian feel like ha-tu ha-tu ha-tu ha-tu ha-tu ha-tu ha-tu HEY!

At the moment I try to combine Techniqal Progressive Jazz with Spanish Traditional Music. The outcome of that sounds new and fresh, and will be included in my new compositions....
And of course Funk with Progressive Metal... But that idea I got from Spastic Ink..... i actually sounds good....

I'm actually focusing on that too.
What I tend to do is mix different band styles
eg. my incomplete powertab file contains influences from Meshuggah, Slayer, Necrophagist and Dillenger Escape Plan

yes those scales are pretty cool. i use some of them in some of my songs, but im not trying to go all out like yngwie with minor modes. in my eyes yngwie is the best . those scales have a intresting/ dark sound to it.
if u like those scales then u should definitly check out the spanish phrygian.

I like that, I can really hear the Slayer in it!
The intro sounds like "Chaosphere Era" Meshuggah in a very "Slayer" mood. Nicely done.

are you talking of like mixing styles.
in my music theres usually everything. somthing poppy metal of course, reggae, jazz, the metal reggae is awsome.
as for real arabian/spanish souding scales, thats all i ever do. major anything just sounds stupid to me. in one of our songs(incomplete) it goes reall bluesy intro, then metal verse, then a break down with ritard to a slow reggae up beat kinda thing, then a crazy( i wish) neoclassicalish solo(im not good enough but its that kind of feel, string skiping and such) another song is all tribal dancy with the doom, ba doomba doom, ba doomba sound.look at sleep terror. metal then jazz.

Mixing styles is very exciting, but it can be seen as "selling out" by some of the more reactionary, elitist, mainstream-paranoid "trend-haters" who have an exceedingly negative outlook on life.
Shame they can't just grow up.
I'd like to mix jazz with metal, but I'm not sure how to incorporate jazz stylings into heavy/brutal riffs, rather than having to do jazz breakdowns all the time..Any suggestions?

Seve420:
That piece was badass, I love the lil arpeggio part (bar 25), that sounds so goddamn kick fuckin ass. I hear slayer all over that main riff (starting with bar 11). Nice work!
\m/Eat At Joe's\m/:
Maybe try basing the progression using jazzy styled chords, then create a brutal riff over it.

I like using JAZZ chords (a lot of inversions) with Death metal and tempo cahnges like JAZZ, or sometghing like that. AHH, and I use the sapanish phrigyan scale finishing in mayor. Something like FLAMENCO. hehehehhe (I love that right hand RAsgueo.

\m/Eat At Joe's\m/:
check this site out http://www.power-chords.com/Jazz/
it has some common jazz chords. Try making ya a nice lil progression. Then experiment with stuff. Try some arpeggios with those chords. Try inversions of those arpeggios, sweep em, pedal tones, legato, etc etc. I'm sure you can whip up some sweet jazzish metal tones... hope this helps.

Great!!! Thanks so much for your help-that wasn't sarcastic, either.
Now I get it.
Oh, and John-sorry mate-it's changed!! How's your accounting going? I'm no accountant, I just take money management, etc. classes. It's okay, but all the bank reconciliations and so on tend to put me to sleep....Whatever you're into.
(I went really off topic there, apologies once again!!)

Thanks for changing your sig.
Exams on Monday and Tuesday I'm afraid. I'll probably have to do a couple of reconciliations as well - bank rec's and control account rec's, etc. I passed my mocks comfortably so I should be OK.
Anyway, I digress... back to the theory!

Sorry I'm not the biggest no lead all rhythm/use the same rhythm everytime type of person, not to offend fans of the "great" genres such as nu metal.

could u tell me what is so special about nu-metal/whatever the hell u wanna call it cuz i dont get what it's purpose, its roots. they sound like little kids/girls so im thinking their roots are hair metal. and they dont know how to play in a normal tuning, they dont seem to have any real music expirence so they could be punk (not misfits aka the best punk).
the way i see my guitar playing/music, is: painting a picture with words is too easy, any moron/drug(rap/in my eyes) user could do that, but acctually sit down and make a song with out using words, thats pretty hard. i think i like insturmentals is because i have classical roots. but i just feal that it takes more talent to make that kind of music, acctual music. most of the stuff i hear on the radio is, the same as yoddaling(jibberish/in my eyes) but thats my opionion. be free to express urs too. sorry if i sound like a prick

I totally agree bro! When you can make music without any words... then you know you got something good. That's why I'm so turned off by rap and such. Anyone can bark a poem to the beat...

Ah yes. Atheist did that very good also.
I dont know about anyone else. I really liked the punk/thrash/hardcore crossover with the likes of Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, Corrosion of Conformity and Stormtroopers of Death.

I'm thinking about mixing like the rythm of thrash but make the riffs a little more melodic.

I love COC, they successfully crossed blues with metal. I think they done a kick fuckin ass job on meshing the genres too. I really can't think of any other metal bands that have that much blues influence.
