New Meshuggah
How many have picked up the new Meshuggah album..."Catch thirtythree"..? I just got it a little while ago...and it is definitely out there as always.
Its really fucking weird. If you heard "I", you will know how it was one long as song...(21 minutes to be exact) It is the same with this..only expanded upon a little more. Pretty fuckin trippy if you ask me actually.
They said their next album will be back to the old format....as song, and than another one that doesn't sound the same.
Some people are gonna like this, others will hate it. Check it out though.

I've just ordered it from the Relapse site. Judging by the reviews I've read, I'm eagerly anticipating its arrival.

yes its good. the best is "Mind's Eye" i think, where there are a lot of guitar noises and a synthesized voice over it. its been done before, but its really really cool.

The first three tracks or so are the exact same riff. They just wanted to do the whole "many tracks, just one song" that Frederik did with the Special Defects. Coming off the (incredible) I EP, I was a tad disappointed.
(PS - Frederik Thordendal's Special Defects are fucking amazing.)

After being impressed by pretty much everything else they've released, I was dissapointed with this. There is not enough variance in the riffage, and it makes it sound too repetitive.

it's the same song song, repeated thirteen times to make one big song.
it sucks that much.

I was listening to a sample of the first two songs and they played the EXACT same riff played on each song! No joke.

to be honest i cant remember one single meshuggah riff. i forget them as soon as they stop playing it. so i hadnt noticed the repeating riff thing. that whole albums supposed to be an experience, not a drive around town blaring it kind of album. listen with headphones at night and you get into a trance, thats how it should be
either way, i still like it

I give props to Meshuggah for their drum programming, but the new stuff is pretty much the same ol stuff.

Considering it's supposed to be one long song, saying 'Two songs have the EXACT SAME riff' is like complaining that the same riff's used twice in a song: '0H MV GODZORS!!!!!!!!!!!! teh riff from the beginning of Raining Blood gets repeated again later in the song!!!!!!!!' I mean, in Crimson II a bunch of riffs repeat from song to song too. Same with a lot of concept albums. You shut up and deal with it.
That said, this might very well suck. Listening for the first time.
I sure hope they actually come back with an album of songs next time, even if this rules.
And they'll quit if you give me your Engl before I leave Chi-town, Eric. I guarantee it, personally.

The drums are programmed on Catch 33 according to the band themselves in an interview for Terrorizer magazine.

No, the fuckers used a drum machine because they didn't have time to use real drums and also because the riffs were changing again and again up until they were recorded.
I am somewhat impressed by their efforts on this album, but the whole one long song thing is a little old. They said their next album will be a normal album (thank god)
Don't get me wrong though, there is some cool sounding stuff on this album...I think its pretty trippy in a way if you listen to it from start to finish...I'm guessing that is what their intent was anyway.

I used to think like that but when they're done properly and you can't tell that they're programmed I don't mind.

Tomas remarked in the recent interview:
"It adds a cold, emotionless edge. It would never have come out the way it did if we had recorded live drums. It was a huge project that used, like, 120 channels and we spent half a year working continuously on just moving stuff around, adding and changing things. It would have been impossible to do that if we were having to relearn and re-record parts."
Don't worry Transient:
"Apart from making things sound a certain way, the process also gave us motivation for the next album, the inspiration to go back to writing and recording how we usually do."

Im just saying... it would be ALOT more impressive if they had an actual drummer play it. The drumming has always been there strong point.. and now that its a drum machine they really have nothing going for them imo.

yeah i have to agree. thats my number one turn off, drum machines. i love real drummers and hearing them play. drum machines make me REALLY not like an album, at all. even if they SOUND real which they hardly ever do. i always loved hearing haake's hi hat opening and closing while he played crazy ass beats

Also keep in mind that a drum machine is not a big deal because they do not plan on playing any of this material live.

If they hadn't told you flat out it was a drum machine, I don't think you would've known.
And my location was "sam's house" because she got suspended, and... actually, I can't remember. I think it was because at one point or another I was her e-whore or some stupid shit like that. Its back to something else.

I'm actually not digging it at the moment - I is much better. I wasn't paying too much attention though so I'll have to sit and really give it a good listen before I cast judgement.

Some parts could've been done away with ("Minds Mirror;" I skip it every time). And the fact that the same riff, while kick ass, is repeated for the first 3 songs...
I still love it, but I can understand alot of people's complaints.
