Psychology of guitar
Okay I was talking to this guy who has been playing guitar for 50 years. He talked about his service in the armed forces. It takes 21 days to make a habit of something. So if you practice a song or whatever at a retardly slow pace for 21 days never increasing the speed. So while your practicing at a retardly slow pace your becoming extremely accurate. You also work on form, you move your wrist as little as possible so when you try to play fast you go as fast as possible. It also teaches you to play without thinking at all.

Its a strange post yes, but I think any and all new approaches to inundating muscle memory should be entertained thoroughly.

i dont have the patience for this. i play a lick slow for about 5 minutes IF that. then i play it fast and butcher it. i have very little patience for soloing. this is why i am a mediocre lead play

This is a way to learn songs scales or anything. ^ and if you want to get better at guitar than you better get patience or you won't be sucessful at all.

thanks, but im plenty successfull. im happy when i play guitar, i am good at rhythm and a fairly sound lead player. i lack the motivation to play for 13 hours like all the "best" did and the physical capability to play for more than about 30 minutes

Not preaching to Transient, rather thinking out loud ...
I don't know ... we could be talking about the fast solo section to Steve Vai's "For The Love Of God", or rehearsing an insanely difficult Dillinger Escape Plan style riff ... You could just spend 5-10 minutes a day on it. After 20 or so days, you have a head-turning riff/lick, and as a grand total you've spent maybe 2 hours or so on it.

What I need to do is write one monster riff/lick incorporating every technique and fingering pattern known to man and do this with it. Or just learn Fermental Offal Discharge .....
EDIT : OH wait, I'm already doing that with "Ashes Of The Wake"

Thats how i learn stuff. with guitar pro u just turn the tempo down to half speed. learn it in time at that speed. then slowly build it after mastering all the notes

Musical theory and guitar philosophy gives me a fucking headache. Most people just play the damn song. If you have trouble with it, you usually have to learn how to overcome those obstacles in your own way. If you've got to play it extremely slow at first..and.....then...uh...um.......holy shit, dude....what the fuck are you even talking about? You've got about ten people in a fucking coma from this thread. My fried brain cannot handle your rambling.

shimi-- Wth are you smoking anyway? Your avatar is perfect for what you said.
Transient-- I know that Bob used to play for hours during the day and sometimes if he couldn't sleep at night he'd play in the middle of the night. Unplugged of course because I don't think I ever heard him with his door and my door closed. But those that play for multiple hours probably don't even realize they're playing that length of time. They get into a good obsessive thing and are absorbed in it. I've been the same way on certain things. If you can only do it for a short period of time and that works for you that's great. But patience is a learned thing so force yourself to take the time to do a thing that's a little more difficult and you'll be fine.
Chaos-- The 21 day thing I've heard for ages. When I quit smoking I remembered that when I'd go to bed. It was a habit for years to reach in the drawer and get the stuff out while I watched tv before crashing. But after a while I broke that automatic routine. It can work for biting your nails or anything you want it to. I've never heard it in this manner though.

I see what the guy is saying, repetition is what helps, and its more to with the repetition over a long period of time, as opposed to playing it non-stop for 2 hours then giving up.
I need a practise/warm up routine, 'bout time i learnt how to use powertab too

well yeah, sometimes you get sucked in. but for me, i have never had that happen. i have a back problem and my back after aches about 20 minutes of playing. just 5 mintues ago i was learning children of bodom's youre better of dead sweeping chorus and had to stop because i need to save energy for later. it sucks, but you become very efficient

If the man has back problems that's a very valid excuse. Pay attention and hope you never have it.
Transient--Is your guitar a solid or hollow body? Large or smaller body style? Maybe a little less weight would help or changing positions freqently. At least for just practicing.

NO, I mean at a retardly slow pace for 21 days then you form the habit of playing that song so when you play it at reg. speed you can play fast and accuratly and you can play the song without thinking.

I've never told you this, but from reading about your problem several months ago , you've inspired me to practice using every ounce of time that I can and making every second count. If I ever think about taking a break to watch television or whatever I tell myself "Since I have the capability to practice longer, don't insult those who have to stop practicing for health reasons, by putting it down. The guitar is a priviledge and not an incoveniance!"
So yeah, in a way you've motivated me to practice more than ever.

weak. your english is pathetic, you come to these forums with stupid "helpful" posts anyways. you arent going to need to wait 20 days to speed something up. its just not necessary. learn something the old fashioned way
your gimmicks suck
you DID come to argue, you started this all by calling me a sucky guitarist having heard no proof. you came here just itching to start some shit, and you did. youre probably no older than 13 anyways. so youre either a young dumbass prick or an old doofus with poor english skills and nothing better to do than throw around accusations
sorry steve but i cant help myself

Talk about breaking a tough habbit, I used to always crack my knuckles when I was bored, (every minute of every single day for the last 20-odd years), and then you said that a doctor told you it casues arthritis or something along those lines. Didn't take me no 21 days to break that habbit, I'll tell you that much. I've done it maybe once since.
And what you said about playing for long periods of time definitelly applies to me. I'll be practicing a particular lick or a riff before I get ready for work, and before you know it, I'm running late. Time just slips by.

I'm with Transient on this one. That really was an unprovoked attack. Usually, I'd suggest banning the prick, but he did offer some useful advice, so maybe show him some mercy?

Well, the approach I take when I learn something new:
I try to break it down into parts IE: the opening part of the song. I have to memorize it first. I go at a very slow pace just to get my fingers used to it and to try to develop the most efficient picking pattern IE: start with an uppick, then a quick sweep, then two downpicks etc.
Once i've memorized that part, I try to play it faster almost immediately until I either reach the correct speed, or until I can play it at a reduced speed correctly.
It does not take me 21 days to figure most things out. I agree with what some others have said earlier. If there is a difficult passage on a song that I need to practice, then I would make that part of my daily routine. I usually have several 'difficult' passages that I am working on so my daily routine would consist of 10-20 minutes of my daily practice time. I don't want to get frustrated by trying to force it in a hurry, or in 21 days. Eventually, those difficult passages become easier and then I remove them and insert some newer ones.
This way, you can work on multiple songs, at the same time, which helps keep things fresh for me. Those multiple songs may each have a difficult passage or two in them. Once I have those songs memorized, I learn some other stuff but continue to work on those difficult passages to get the speed up.
The overall rule: Exams.
When you study for exams, you rarely remember anything if you cram for 10 hours.
If you study for 2 hours a day for 5 days, chances are much better at remembering it past the exam.
If you break it down even further, 1 hour for 10 days, it's even easier and it's less frustrating. I've done this successfully in school.

its all fine, but what i do is just play the first part of the song over and over as fast as i can, even if its faster than the original, untill im satisfied, then skip a few parts do the same, go back fill the gap play it all the way through then finish it off, but basically just repeating the riffs over and over as fast as i can, untill its easy to play its slowly

You also work on form, you move your wrist as little as possible so when you try to play fast you go as fast as possible. It also teaches you to play without thinking at all.

I used this method on the first half of Necrophagist's "Fermented Offal Discharge" starting June 3rd. a solo of which I was not that far off of 21 days ago, and I am not dramatically better at now. I am thoroughly dissapointed. I believe I would have learned to play it better if I played it fast from the beginning.
Thanks Chaos!
