There old shit was nowhere close to what early 90s death sounded like. Pussysoul is like the foundation for Nola extreme style metal. Last I checked, Cannibal Corpse wasn't breaking down in the middle of a song with a dirty blues riff.

If you actually want to hear something fresh and different and not complete shit like the other 99% of metal, check the shit out. Any album.

They're hard to compare to anybody. Basically it's like this:

Each song is a riff salad, with riffs varying from anywhere between mellow and laid-back blues to some heavy doomy shit to technical death/grind to whatever they feel like next, virtually all of it Southern-fried in that odd way New Orleans bands have. One of my favorite bands, whose respect in the underground is entirely incommensurate with their ability to rock. Which I guess isn't a surprise, generally, but in this case I mean that they rock and get no respect, not that they suck and get respected because metal fans gave up being good as a critical criterion a while back.

The way you just described them they sound quite comparable to Dead Horse, but I don't know if you've ever heard Dead Horse. They were a (primarily) thrash band that incorporated lots of jazz, blues, death metal, hardcore, punk, and country elements.
