Newstead

I'm a Metallica guy. But I can't find any of Newstead's playing interesting. (Maybe because I heard Burton first?) Even the stuff on ...And Justice turns me off. So I was wondering if any of you knew of any interesting Newstead basslines. Possibly off ...And Justice or Load, as for those are the albums that I have shuned.

I like the bassline for "One." I play it in my band.

"One" is a good song...but is there anything off the rest of ...And Justice/Load/ReLoad (The Black Album has gotten old) that is worth looking at?

You can actually hear the bass on that album?

Yeah, I was going to ask the same question. I wasn't aware of there being any bass on ...And Justice For All. I always kinda hoped they'd re-release that album with a bass track. Then it might shit on everything.

I'm surprised they haven't, there'd obviously be a quick and easy buck in it.

There is bass in the album, I can hear it, but it is hard sometimes. You can hear the bass a little bit better on "One."

After 18 years of trying, I still haven't located the bass in that mix.

I actually have started to believe they forgot to put the bass in the mix they sent out to be released and just went with it. It was to late to do anything once millions of copies were already made

Hahaha, that would be funny if that was the case.. not for newstead though..

But i can understand this all, the bass is very under mixed in a lot of metal.... and metallica..

You want to hear some really awesome bass playing by Jason Newsted? Ok. It exists, just not with Metallica. Listen to Flotsam and Jetsam's first album 'Doomsday for the Deceiver'. He played bass with them on that album before joining Metallica. It isn't always the most creative bass playing, but it is extremely fast, thrashy stuff. What I love is that there is good bass throughout the whole album too. It just goes to show that bassists that use a pick can be really good too. Really makes you wonder why the hell he left F&J to join Metallica ...

Oh and beware the toxic amount of cheese that was crammed into that album ... heh heh heh

Newsted missed the mixing sessions for ...AJFA, so those idiots mixed it with a ridiculously low volume. I think Jason is a far underrated bassist, especially because Metallica gave him no room to play like he should (...AJFA being the best example).

My Friend Misery is kinda interesting, and if you're semi-retarded you might find King Nothing fun. Maybe.
Newstead never really seemed to get a chance to "show off" in Metallica like Burton did, which is quite a shame.

They didn't forget to put the bass in the mix, they just out-and-out pulled it out of the mix. They admitted at one point that they didn't trust Jason to do a good enough job on the CD, so they pulled the bass out of the mix, and re-mixed some of the guitar lines much lower/heavier, to compensate for it. There are no bass lines on "And Justice For All".

If you are looking for interesting bass lines from Newstead, look elsewhere, like to Voivod, for example. He is (I hear) currently working with Voivod again, and they will be releasing a new CD in the near future...Being Voivod, I have no doubts that it'll smoke. (Although, on a personal note, I honestly don't believe Newstead could play an interesting bass line if his life depended on it, but that's just my personal opinion...)

Cheers.

Have you heard 'Doomsday'?

Speaking of Flotsam and Jetsam, they have a new (and apparently their final) album coming out soon. I heard one song already ... probably the best I've ever heard from that band. Lots of new aspects to the music ... they even have a death metal style riff in in (as in a riff that consists of only 16th notes and the note being played changes after every four sixteenth notes ... hope this makes sense). The production is also very awesome.

Well that was off topic ... sorry.
