Rocktron Chameleon
I saw there's a secondhand Chameleon for sale nearby, does anyone have some experience with these?
I'm looking for a preamp anyway, preferably with effects included. I'd like to get good solo sounds out of my next preamp, and ofcourse high gain for br00tal stuff. Would the Chameleon do?
I'll be able to test it IF I want to buy it, but it's always nice to hear some opinions first (and to make sure the trip is worthwile, even if for testing alone).

If I am not mistaken the guitarist from ARSIS uses one of these, or it could be a rocktron VOODUVALVE not sure but he has a good live sound.

Well, Arsis' riffs sound br00tal, crunchy, and sweet, and the leads/solos come out sharp and crystal clear. So if Jim Malone uses a Chameleon, it's a very kick-ass preamp.

call me stupid but what is a pre amp? If you have an amp, why would you need one?

soething like that.
a preamp just shapes the tone and boosts it to "line level"... then the poweramp takes that signal and amplifies it.
you can't just buy a jcm 900(per se) preamp and then a 5150's power amp. but you can buy a marshall jmp-1 preamp and a peavey classic 60/60.
amp makers make preamps and poweramps, a "head" is simply a preamp and a poweramp in one unit.

One question... it IS possible to play on a head alone without having it hooked up to a cabinet/poweramp right? And what's the difference between a poweramp(is this a regular amp) and a cabinet?

a "HEAD" is a preamp and a poweramp combined into one unit.. and the cabinet is a housing or "box" that holds the speakers.
you can't run your preamp into a cab without a power amp.
you need a preamp before your poweramp in order to get a signal.
and your poweramp has got to be plugged into a cabinet to make noise.
for example PREAMP + POWERAMP + CABINET = HALFSTACK
