The time has come, I need a new head
Well my Peavey VTM has died, and I need a new head.
I have been looking at two heads; the Mesa single Rectifier, and the Engl Thunder. The main problem I have is that there is no guitar shops around here that have any Engls. I have played The single rec and enjoyed the tone very much. Unfortunately, the only time I have heard the Engl is on rocksolid, here
If anyone here has played the Thunder, is the tone on this sound sample typical of this amp?
Also, for anyone who has played both amps, what would you choose for a fuller, punchier distortion?
The final question; which amp is louder? I know not all 50 watt amps are equally as loud, so one of them has to be louder than the other.

The rectifier tubes in the amp (correct me if I'm wrong xdislexicx)....the 5U4G's...I know I've seen pics of single, dual, and triple recs....each one corresponding with the amount of 5U4G's (1.....2.....3)....my triple rec has 3...so it seems to make sense to me.

i say engl because it's cheaper and i thinkg it sounds better.
neither is going to be louder, same wattage. it's going to be to close to tell. because we'd be talking abut less than 1db difference which aint shit.
but the engl will probably "cut better"
then again they sound nothing alike.

yep, the single rectifier has one rectifier, the dual has two and the triple has 3.
and the wattage goes single(50w) dual(100w) and triple(150w)

yup.
The Thunder has a typical distortion like ALL Engl's have, the sample sounds like a typical Engl distortion to me, my Savage 60 sounds a lot like it.
The Single Recto is still damn nice though, if you love the Recto sound that is, see they're both not really versatile, you probably know that but if you're basically buying the amp for the distortion then the Thunder is the way to go IMO. But hey, I'm biassed as fuck

Have you considered a Fireball MTM? It's 2 channels, but I think it may be a little more raw and viscious which would suit your style of music well.

If I had the money, I'd want to buy a Marshall Valvestate 8100. Chuck used em, so they must sound atleast decent.

Ah yes, I would like to buy a higher grade Engl, but unfortunately, I can't afford it. Hell I am gonna cringe when I buy that Thunder I'm just working a summer job now, but maybe if I get more serious about performing, I'll get something better at a later date. Honestly, I think the Thunder would serve me well for a long time
Thanks to everyone who contributed here!
