I had this real cheap acoustic guitar when i was 8 years old and started playing random things on it. A i got better i started to like it and learnt how to read tabs. when i was 10 years old i got my first electric guitar and started playing stuff on it. Since I was 11 i started playing death metal. Now i'm 18 1/2 years old and I still play death metal mainly. Only I got a lot better since

Started with acoustic at 12 in music class at school, nothing too serious just some basic chords and stuff and I got hooked and my dad got me an acoustic which I still have, after one year I thought I could try electric guitar and thats how its been til now, I'm soon 16 FYI.

I have listened to bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Slayer and Metallica...also alot of 80s punk... since I was born.
I was a surprise baby...unexpected, and have a sister 14 yrs older than me and she was 14 in 1985 so you can imagine the great stuff I grew up hearing.
As far back as I can remember I knew I was going to play guitar...and when the time came in my life where I was able to get my own...I started going into Pawn Shops and shortly before I turned 15 got my first axe.
Life has only gotten better and better.

It was fun but i didnt find it challenging and i always wanted to play guiitar so i took it up and i ve never put it down since

Started in last December. Bought a Schecter C-1 Classic, a Line 6 Guitarport, and have been practicing religiously since. I recently auditioned for a band and made it. We are currently rehearsing to open for a Goatwhore show at the end of June. It'll be our first gig after one month of being together as a band.

I had nothing to do in the music class, so my teacher told me that i should go to this guitar class that she had. I did. It took like two weeks then i couldn't resist it and i started playing like hell. Then we had this concert, and i played Love hurts with my band. I played and sang so well that my mother started to cry. Then like one month after that concert i got my first electric guitar from my father. Then i got my hands on GP4 and I just kept learning more and more and soon after that i got more into metal. So i bought a new guitar and made up a real rig(sorta) and now we're having a concert in two days(on thursday). I'll be playing Paranoid and Enter Sandman(i'll be doing the solos in both of them).

I decided that i wanted to make some music, not just listen to it- so i started to play guitar. Been playing about 3 years now, trying to get a band together, want to play death/doom/black metal, but finding it difficult to find like-minded musicians

how can u love something that u only do to impress a chick, that sounds pretty stupid.
but to ur general question, i started playing guitar as soon as i heard metallica, pantera, and ozzy osbourne. they influenced me so much when i started. my first year playing i played fade to black in front of 500 kids at my school. now i listen to even heavier, faster shit which makes me wanna play even more than i already do. i hope to get a label from centry media someday.

Are you kidding? Guys are constantly doing stupid things to impress us.
And most are so counter productive...so I give a lil credit to a guy if jamming is the extreme he'll go to to impress a girl.
I mean fuck....do you know how many real life Jackass stunts I've witnessed all in the name of....
"Check me out ladies"
right before their self induced carnage begins...LOL

well i had my first electric guitar when i was 15, and even though i was into metal i didnt really play it for quite a few years, that is untill when i was 18, and i got into a fight with my dad and stabbed him in the chest, i thought he was gonna die, so i got so upset that i wouldnt go out or anything so i just sat down for a couple of months and played guitar nearly all day long, he got better and i started going out again but i never really stopped playing guitar up untill i got my business running, then a year or so later i bought loads of eqquipment a new guitar and got back into it

Started playing when i was 16, im 17 now. My friend played the guitar and i thought it was real cool, he taught me a couple of songs on the acoustic, a tool song and 'by the rivers of babylon' i think it was lol. But yeah i loved it instantly. Had a little 3/4 acoustic at home which was alright for a while, then the bridge snapped off. Then i really got into it after learning to read tabs, got an electric and basically learnt tool, easy drop D stuff.
Then i became more fond of opeth when i was playing the guitar, you dont notice the talent in music unless you have tried it. So i started learning some opeth riffs, a bit of their acoustic. I was practicing a few hours every day (how ever long my wrists and fingers could handle.) I never really looked at it as practicing, you think of practise as something you have to do - i play because i love it.
Now a year later i just download a gp4 tab of anything i hear that sounds cool. Im learning a lot of Pink Floyd lately, building up speed, bends all that sorta stuff.
I still want to get lessons, be shown everything im doing wrong.
Well thats about it enough.

I started bass in a grade i cant remember. but I picked up guitar instead. Ive always wanted to be that guy with the guitar sitting around the campfire playing. That and one who busts out with daemonic riffage in front of normies to make them gag and say, "Dear Lord"
Ive been playing for 5-6 years and I still suck, its taken my band almost one and a half years to write 7 songs. Id post them but the person who recorded us was a self minded fuck who thought the bass should sound like someone ripping some morbid ass at different pitches throughout the entire song. Thus we said "fuck him up his fat ass"

Was inspired mainly by Slayer to play guitar (especially the solos off Agressor Perfect [fast]) when I was 13 or 14. I wanted to play lead at first, but then dug more into rythmn as I progressed.

Started about 2 years ago when I started listening to Hendrix. I thought "hey, that sounds pretty fucking good, I bet I could do that!" so a week later I bought a shitty Squier acoustic, got lessons (still have lessons),then I got into metal. After that around 7 months I got a Fender Mex-Strat, then then ordered a Ran, then got a RG550, then a Fender 1965 Newporter acoustic. Over that period of time my room become half empty(sold a lot of shit off!).

I was unempolyed and out of college so i decided to get a guitar to quell the boredom, i was 16. Never had a lesson i just learnt the major chords first, out of cheap guitar books then learnt powerchords. Started to learn simple rock riffs. I used to watch my mates and be like man these guys are good i'll never be that good, so i just watched and studied them, what their fingers do etc. and i just kept on learning and learning. The first band i joined was in 2000 when i was 21, i didn't write much i was more a rhythm guitarist but that was fun and my band (Vizulize This) was started late 2001 and is the first band i've written music for and i'm even more so now, the main songwriter, i still have never had a lesson, i know bits of theory and scales and that. I can play about ten times as good as i thought i'd be but i know i can be better.
That's my story.

i started when i was about twelve, my dad got me a yamaha strat nockoff for christmas and i just fell in love with playing. at the time i was into punk rock and nu metal, and i just sat there for hours until i had figured out how to play all my favorite songs. then we visited my grandparents one summer. my grandfather plays guitar in a country western chuch band (hahaha). he knew i played and gave me his gibson les paul. he told me that it was more of a lead guitar and he was a rythm guy, i guess it had been in the basement for a while. after that i started getting alot better, just figuring out songs instead of printing tabs helped in teaching myself. now im 16 and hate punk and nu metal and spend my trying to write the most complicated things i can come up with cuz its fun.

Started when I was 15 on a POS no name acoustic. Finally graduated to a mex-strat. Also about the time I started playing guitar, I discovered thrash. Never been the same since. Rigged the strat with a high-output SD hotrail and been grinding that axe since about a year ago. Now Ibanez owns me, and thrash binds my roots as I grow! I seek speedy, melodic metal in any shape, form, or fashion. Currently high strung on COB, Negrophagist, Cradle of Filth, and Lamb of God.

I started at age 4 years old because my dad. He plays still and my dad side of the family are musically inclined. So family get togethers and play music seemed like fun to me.
By the time I was 10 I had already been ear training myself with different tunings and learning by ear only at that time.
When I hit my teens I discovered alot of influences. The first one was Jimi Hendrix from the band of gypsy days. Just the wild noises he made with the guitar was fasinating to me.
But what really did it for me was when I was 14 I discovered Randy Rhoads and became the biggest Randy Rhoads freak. The Tribute cd is what did it for me. And whats weird is I have a son who is 11 years old now. He is learning to play the guitar and since I was a big Rhoads freak back in the day he likes him to. But whats even more weird is he has the same birthday as Randy Rhoads. Now thats scary and weird!!

I got some cheap ass acoustic when I was 13. I took a guitar class that allowed me to play for 2 hours during school in the ninth grade. I got my first electric for my 14th birthday. Played till about 5am everyday during the summer. I bought an Epiphone Goth Flying V 1 year later and sold my first guitar for 150$. I bought a BOSS Metalzone the day after. Played the hell out of that guitar for about 6 months and bought an Ibanez RG270DX. Played those for another six months till I bought my Randall Half Stack. 3 days before DIMEBAG got shot(May he rest in peace) I ordered a signed DIME Camouflage Trendkill 333(Love that guitar to death). Started my lessons in February. I traded in my RG for a Zakk Wylde Overdrive. I just recently confiscated a Jackson DKMG from my brother for not taking care of it. Had it rewired and all that good stuff. And 3 and a half years later I'm still as interested in playing guitar as the day I picked it up.

Been playing for 4 months, usually, play for about 3-5 hours a day. I wasn't pleased with sitting on home all day, Devouring Junk food and Never holding up to any of my commitments, Video gamming my troubles away. So here i am, I do alot of excersises to hone my skills, And i know alot of fun riffs from couple different songs, I go to a guitar class at my school with a varying, er, style. I prefer sweeps and techniques that dont rip up pig anus, and they strum with their whole arm, But everyones Cool, So it's all good. ^^ I've gotten my sweeping good, And can do some really simple fret tapping and finger picking too, I can use three fingers with each of the latter two. But i Cant do much at all with my Fretting hand then. One thing though, is that my picking Isn't hard enough, Sometimes my friends say that the middle is softer then the rest, so, Im picking On a more horizontal Inclination, And lifting my wrist. But i'm pleased with myself so far, So im fine for now i guess. But we can always get better! And thats when the unhealthy amounts of practice come in.

i've been playing for far too fucking long compared to you lot. close to ten years!
but i have never practised, as in sat down and tried to get better. i have always just played what i can, and if i hear something i want to learn, ill learn it. unless its too good in which case i give up on it and pick it up again a year or two later.
i got into guitar so long ago i cant remember what made me do it. i think it was the intro for purple haze, but im not sure.
my earliest guitar memory (age 11 or 12) is only being able to play chords badly, and someone else making a bet with me that i couldnt play the intro to "oh well" by fleetwood mac (ill be impressed if anyone knows who they were before the 80's)
i found i could play it very well instantly, and shocked the reckless gambler.
it was probably that reaction that made me pick it up every day.
im not a child prodigy, and im not spectacularly good, but i could write a book about why thats not important

I had a friend who's older brother came home from the Army and was playing "Master of Puppets".....I thought it was cool sounding. He showed me how to play the main riff to Iron Man and I immediately fell in love with playing heavy metal. I was probably about 13 at that time. I played religously till about the age of 17 and then I went into the US Air Force. I didn't get my gear back till I was 20 or so, at that point I had to re-learn alot of stuff I forgot. Once I got out of the military I have played constantly and now own a Les Paul standard, a Jackson Dr-3, Shecter PT blackjack and a Hamer Eclipse. I mostly play King Diamond/Mercyful Fate stuff right now, but I love all genres of heavy metal.

I had always wanted to get a guitar but my mother always said it would be too loud. She had a classical acoustic in our attic but I was too young to climb up there and try to play it.
Two summers ago I bought a FirstAct(WalMart lmao) guitar and a 4watt crappy amp from the kid across the street. I spent that whole summer teaching myself how to read tabs and what theory was and the many guitar techniques I picked up on by using MetalTabs and Ultimate-Guitar.
After the summer I bought a BC Rich Bronze Warlock(bad choice, but I was still a newb) and kept playing.
After getting enlightened by the many forum-goers, I purchased a real guitar, an ESP LTD neck-thru m200fm. Ive come a long way since then and now I can shred and play pretty fast. I have tried getting bands together but the drummer always bails. My dream is to play up on stage one day in front of a lot of people.

I don't really remember what made me want to learn guitar... which is weird since it was only about 2 years ago. My older sister, who was heavily into punk music, had an acoustic guitar that she'd been learning on. When she gave up on guitar and turned to bass, I took the acoustic and started playing. I think the first song I learnt was something by the Frankenstein Drag Queens... But yeah, after playing that for about 8 months I realised I had no way of getting any decent cash, as I was in the business of being a professional freeloader. So when I got about 80 bucks I bought a cheap piece of shit Onyx from ebay. I was very disappointed when I plugged this guitar into my sister's amp... man I hate that guitar. The story goes downhill from here, I guess. I got a lot better at playing and started learning stuff like Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, Dark Tranquillity, random songs that kick ass... but the guitar, being such a piece of shit, began to deteriorate. It was never good to begin with, but now it's fucked. Doesn't work on an amp anymore, not that I have one... Sister moved out recently, taking her bass and amp with her. Still don't have another guitar... but hey, I'd say I'm doing pretty damn good considering what I have to work with... I play for hours every day, and play on other peoples guitars quite often. So I'm not completely deprived of decent guitars.... Meh.
Yeah. That was a lot of typing... Man I'm bored.

Well, I picked up the guitar my freshman year of high school. I already had an old acoustic that my grandfather gave, but I wanted an electric. So I cruised the pawnshops and picked up a silvertone guitar and amp. I played these like crazy until I got my LTD my sophomore year. Then in my junior year, I got my Dimebolt and my crate amp. I was in heaven for a while. Started a band and played a few shows. Pretty much stayed the same until about two years ago. I traded my dimebolt for a 5150 combo and bought an NJ mockingbird from '83. My old band ended up breaking up but I managed to scrape another together. Thats pretty much it. Been playing for 7 years now.

this is my 1st post so if i do something wrong.... I've been playin for 3 years on and off. I taught myself how to play the accoustic guitar and played in church for a few months. Now that i'm smart enough to realize that god doesn't exist i don't play in church anymore. then i started listening to system of a down which my friend got me into. then i moved on to slipknot but soon got over them. now i'm 16 and listening to stuff like darkthrone, dimmu borgir, immortal, emperor, mayhem and the like. i just recently got an Epiphone Les Paul. I also have a bass guitar and bass amp, which i use instead of buying a regular amp. i get a decent distortion out of the amp by turning the volume of the guitar all the way up. i've been working on my own black metal solo project called "The Blasphemic Requiem". it will be me playing guitars, bass, drums(from a keyboard),and vocals.I've been trying to get a sound similar to early dimmu or immortal. i'm still not Really Really good at guitar, by that i mean i can't shred out solos but i can do some decent tremelo picking along with decent riffing. i will record a cover version of dimmu's "Stormblast" and write about 3 more songs and make a demo cd. if anybody wants a copy when i'm done with it please send me a email at "soadfreak3@gmail.com". when i'm finished i'll let you know and either e-mail you the songs or send you a cd by mail. i'm not charging anything for it...obviously

Always have been in ah of guitars and crazy solos. I remember seeing them and thinking how awesome it would be to play. tried teaching myself once. then when I was 19 ( yeah I started late) a friends brother taught me the intro to metallica one and some other really really basic stuff to play it. Got my grandma to buy me an acoustic and I've been hooked ever since. My grandamothers supports was a big influnce when I first started playing. see bought a lot of my gear, tuner, books, etc. really encouraged me. If she didnt buy me that guitar I probably wouldnt be playing right now.

I bought my first guitar when I was 13, I quickly lost interest and didn't pick it back up until I was 15. Even then, I became bored with it and opted for doing other things, like skipping school and listening to Morbid Angel and Death. It wasn't until I was 17 that I actually found myself enjoying the guitar. I quickly joined a band that played psychedelic rock and continued to hone my skills at home by learning simple black metal songs...stuff like Burzum and Gorgoroth. I got kicked out of the band because my bandmates knew I wanted to play metal and was spending most of my free time with another band.
By the time I was 19 I formed my own band. I was determined to outdo my old bandmates, who are all excellent musicians. As petty as it seemed it really motivated me to become a good guitarist. I would sit in my bedroom with a six pack of some Deschutes and a few bonghits and practice for as long as I could. By the age of 20 I was able to improvise solos with little difficulty and few mistakes or sour notes if any. Our band was notorious around town. Not for good songwriting but for my ridiculous fret wankery.
When it came time to solo I would lay down the fasted blur or arpeggios and 3 strings sweeps I possibly could, often times adding in a little overhand run...kind of like Michael Angelo or Herman Li. Our band broke up sometime in November only to re-unite later that summer. All in all we only played about a dozen shows before our drummer quit. We never searched for a new drummer, we all just kind of did our own thing. I went on to play classical and jazz with a friend of mine and the bassist formed his own death metal band.
Later than year I got a mild case of tendonitis and had to put down the guitar. Me, being the arrogant retard that I am, decided to still play anyways and ended up recording one final song. A 30 second piece of nothing but sweeps. Sure, it was no Serena Arpeggios but it was still a solid piece of music. By then I could barely hold a glass of beer to my lips without my wrist annoying me. It wasn't until early August that I could play without any problems.

I got my guitar when i was 7, kinda got bored, and told my dad i was gunna quit...well later that week he died, i assumed it was my fault, so i played ALOT of guitar daily on my half pint acoustic. Ever since then i've played every day an hour+. I'm 18 now. I can play a lot of shit, basically it.
Oh, and i've been taking lessons since i was 7. I'm grade 7 classical RCM, and grade 3 theory. Next year I'm probably gunna give lessons professionally
