Gibson SG standard vs Special
I wonder if there's much difference between the SG standard and special?
Is it the price worth? (I'm not just talking about the specifications - I can find these on gibson.com - but about sound/experience)
What do you think about using these guitars for metal.
And tuning low (b-e-a-d-f#-b)??
Thanks!

Well just as User01 said, there are guitars that are much better for playing lower tunings. But if you're going to choose between those two, then choose the Special, cos i don't think there's any great difference between them. But if you you're going to buy one, then buy some EMG;s too.

I'm sure there might be better guitars to play metal but there are still a few reasons why I'm considering buying these SG's.
1. I played a time ago on a sg and i found out the neck was very comfortable to play with. Going very easy!
2. I have a baritone (Epiphone Les Paul) which does the job now, but it's hard working and I never get as fast as I get on normal scale length. I do use rather thick strings (.14-.68) which doens't make it easier at all, but the length is real barrier.
3. Doesn't the SG look nice , however I might consider a ESP Viper!
4. I might use SG as well for rock music. (Different tuning though)
Besides I'm not so enthousiastic about the EMG's (at least the one's I've heard), taste differs I guess. I'm looking for a more warm sound.
The concerns I had about the SG is that they are wellknown for their mid-boost; don't know what this will do with my sound when playing 'low tuned'.
I have a peavey 5150 II by the way :P

if your looking for flexibillity in a guitar, then an emg equiped guitar is not suitable
im sure a nice set of SD's will do the trick

yes, the standard is much better then the special. the standard has way better sustain and build quality if you ask me. but with gibson it's allways hit-or-miss

As said before, i have a baritone, but i loose some speed playing this one.
On the other hand, i want to have a versatile guitar, might change my mind and 'retune' it.

why shouldnt he tune down?
extra jumbo frets effect speed and flexibility, i think hes better off getting a standard guitar and tuning down.

Buying a guitar with more frets won't turn a guitar into a bass.
Out of the two, the SG Standard is better, from spec perspective.
Neither is going to be an all out metal axe from the begining but that doesn't mean they can't be.
Switch the pickups to something with greater output and install some thicker guage strings.
As for tuning to B, perfectly pheaseable however it won't be as "tight" as a guitar with a scale length of 25.5 +
Try them both out, see which you prefer.

I sure will; it's always helpfull if people point out where i should look at when buying this specific guitar. I'm not a newbie; i play guitar for about 14 years , but every guitar is different and I think you only find the drawbacks of the guitar when you play about a week on the guitar. One or 2 hours in the shop doesn't give me enough time to find out about these drawbacks.
But we'll see about this one (sg standard)
In the meantime, any suggestion is still welcome:P

Never played the special before, but I gotta say that cosmetically, it looks sweet.
