Most of you are going to think why I'm even here, well stick with me. I've gotten a sudden interest to improve my guitar playing, and I wanna know what some things are. What are sweeps and scales? What do I do to practice them, and what are they for? Also, how would I go about increasing my speed?

Sweep picking is a technique, a scale is a concept.

A "scale" is a means of going from one note to another, and this will establish a pattern. In order for it to be a "scale" this pattern must repeat itself.

"Sweeping" is a technique : Your pick hand "sweeps", a very relaxed strumming of individual notes.

Sweep picking is non-esential, but scales are pretty elementary if your writing stuff or improvising.

sweeps are like chords, but they are played all in a downstroke and your fingers move with the downstroke to make a unique sound. scales are used to determine key for example

the notes of C D E F G A B C make the C Major Scale, if you're using those notes you're in the key of C Major.

itll probably be a while before you can solo, i suggest learning some theory.

ok sweeping is basicaly breaking up the notes in chords and indiviudally picking them in a "sweeping" of the fretboard, and scales are variations of notes in a run... all in key. and my suggestion in increasing speed try oatmeal... and cracking your fingers trim your nails and watch robot chicken... that show is great.

sweeping is a righthand (ur picking hand) technique where u pick the strings either up or down...as opposed to alternate picking where u pick up down up down etc...u really have to see it to fully get the grasp of it
i see alot of posters comparing sweeping to chords...thats not quite right, sweeping is the righthand technique, and only that.
if ur sweeping a chord u are arppegiating (not sure how to spell that word) the chord by making the notes sound seperatly as opposed to letting them ring all togheter
so playing the chord as an arpegio means letting the notes sound seperat, as opposed to letting them ring togheter, to do this u can use the sweeping technique...witch is what most ppl do, but u dont have to....some players like steve morse play alternate picking on arpegios

scales are a collection of notes...it can be all notes on ur fret, like the chromatic scale or one that has only five notes....feks a five note scale starting on the e string u would incoporate all e`s on the fret in that scale...and if the scale has A in it, u play all A`s to...what notes ur actually playing depends on what scale ur playing....most ppl start with the pentatonic scale (penta meaning five (notes))

playing scales is by the way a great way of increasing ur speed
