As much of a death and thrash metal nut I am nowadays, I've always loved the vocals in good old fashioned 80's heavy metal. I was wondering if anybody that really knows how to sing could give me a few pointers on how to start out singing, I've never really tried it myself. I've given it a few tries, but I can tell that I suck. Normally I sound like those gay pop-punk bands on MTV(goes to show you that they can't sing crap), hence why up to now I've only been doing death/thrash vocals to sing along to songs..

I know it's a long stretch, but I'd really like to learn to sing like Eric Adams from Manowar or Rob Halford... maybe even a bit of Kai Hansen(early Helloween). Like... singing in an aggressive deep voice, then going and hitting those insanely high octaves and not sounding like crap.

I don't know crap about singing. Does this involve a lot of forcing or does it just have to come naturally? Because I can't get a high pitched sound without forcing myself breathless, otherwise I sound like a pussy.

Any tips from experienced people would be greatly appreciated.

I know that going to classes helps a lot, but I'd like to be able to something for now on my own.

if your really adament about learning to do that, then the best thing to do it take singing lessons. are you in school? join the choir. sounds gay but it will help

Meh, I did participate in some xmas choir rehearsals when I was forced to, but I'm about to graduate so that's not an option. :P

I know that getting a teacher/coach is the best way to go, but I was just wondering if there's anything I can do on my own until I can afford classes and such.

im sure powerofterror can help you out, he does the whole power metal vocals, i think he goes for the matt (iced earth) type of voice
